Tecmo World Wrestling

Does anyone else love this game?

I use to play the hell out of this when I first got into NES (about 20 years ago now). It always stood out well above and beyond the other NES wrestling titles. I recently re-acquired a copy through a trade and have been playing nearly non-stop.

The graphics, sound, and most importantly of all - gameplay - are excellent. There's over 20 moves per character. You can go outside the ring, on the top rope, and all the moves are actually functional and doable in a reliable manner. I love how the CPU makes come backs when you start dominating; it really feels like the best pro wrestling experience on the console.

What are your thoughts? Do you have a personal favorite NES wrestling title?

It's definitely not a bad game. I still prefer Pro Wrestling over that one a little bit more. TWW blows them both away IMHO.

That may be the first time those words were ever uttered.   You actually liked that game?

Haha I was waiting for it.  I think its strictly for nostalgia purposes.  My best friend had it and we played all of the time when we were kids.

  • Tecmo World Wrestling is the best for the NES in my opinion. I actually like Tag Team Wrestling too. Once you get the hang of it the game isn't that bad. I love how the ref does the three count. "One...two....TTTHHHHRRRRREEEEEEEEEE!"

I love how the ref in TWW only comes out to count pins...then he gets the hell out of there.

  • There's so much goddamn replay value to this game! I really enjoy how there's no dedicated grapple button; I think that's what sets it apart from all the other wrestling titles on the NES. Dr. Guildo is by far my best character. Giant Swing ftw!
  • Man, I loved me some WCW Wrestling when I was growing up. Haven't really run into many others that liked this game

I remember being amazed that WCW had a game on the NES. I saw the cart at FuncoLand like 20 years back, snagged it, took it home, and found out it didn't work lol. After months of fiddling with isopropyl alcohol and q-tips, I got it to work. I was very surprised at that time to learn the game was better than WWF Wrestlemania Challenge. In hindsight, nearly all of the classic WWF NES titles are garbage lol.
  • I think WCW is slightly better than Tecmo, but Tecmo is more ambitious.

I'm the same way with Tecmo Baseball.   Lots of other baseball games for the NES were better, but since that's the one my friend had I got used to playing it.

I'll have to see if I still have my timing down to stretch a single into an inside the park home run

My reaction to Tecmo Baseball is just like yours towards Tag Team Wrestling. What an awful game.
  • Pro Wrestling was the best wrestling game in my opinion.

    with WCW a close second
  • I should order this one sometime. Never got a chance to play it.

I havent played enough wrestling games to have an opinion on which is best. I picked up pro wrestling at some point though just because it was cheap. Played it for hours - couldn't believe how much fun it was and I'm not really into wrestling. Still play it on occasion and it's cool as hell. Will have to pick up some of the other wrestling games. If it's not the clear favorite, I'm missing out on the others.

Lots of people are mentioning the WCW game; nothing special ever stood out to me in regards to it, so I'm wondering what others find so appealing?

TWW has infinitely more depth and variety than any of the other NES wrestling titles IMHO. I get bored with the other ones within five minutes, lol.
  • Wcw was good because you could customize your moves they had submission wins each character had a special finisher, the giant wrench outside the ring, the legendary wrestlers and decent gameplay.Wish they had a wwf version just like that game

Tecmo was so good with most other sports, how'd they screw up baseball?

I know what you mean , you would think tecmo baseball would be on par with rbi baseball but alas it is not

I don't remember HALF of that stuff! Shows you how young and clueless I was. I'll have to secure a copy of the game soon and give it a fresh spin.
  • Wrestlemania Challenge was my favorite growing up, but I remember enjoying the WCW game a LOT as a kid.

In WCW the four moves (from a list of 8, many moves were unique to certain wrestlers) you would program for a single match were still more moves than the entire roster of all characters had in WWF Steel Cage Challenge/King of the Ring combined. WCW has a great roster too, I think some of those guys never appeared in another wrestling game again. Each wrestler actually is recognizable and unique looking, although everybody wears the same tights

The final boss was awesome too, the "WCW Master" Huge sprite for an NES game

They made up for that mistake by making Bad News Baseball. It's a super fun game! Do yourself a favor and play it if you haven't!

Definitely let me know what you think. It's based off of little league and not MLB,but still super fun. It even has the Tecmo Super Bowl-esque cut scenes.

Thanks for the analysis, man! I'm definitely going to track down a copy.

Half the fun is the names, dude! Dr. Guildo is my favorite character, lol
  • I hated this game, but I played it some, cause I owned it. Most of the time I wished it was a WWE game.

Dude, it's SO satisfying hitting a German suplex, giant swing + tossing them out of the ring, hitting an elbow from the top, then a second elbow while they're still down, lol.

None of the WWF games on the NES impress me. I haven't played King of The Ring, though. That's the only one that ever really eluded me.
