Super Mario Sunshine

God I miss this game, and I really want to play it in HD. I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't re-released it digitally yet - but a lot of gamecube games haven't yet. I feel like it was a true sequel to Mario 64 - Super Mario Galaxy didn't do it for me and although graphically appealing - the gameplay really wasn't the same.

Anyone else dying of a HD remake of Sunshine or just a re-release on VC?

  • Seems like a wasted opportunity that Nintendo never released gamecube games to the Wii U VC.

I took matters into my own hands and modded the wii u to play gamecube games with nintendon't.

I need to get back to playing sunshine it is pretty fun. My only gripe about the game is it does not let you invert the horizontal axis which is so annoying.
  • Such a good game.
  • I have yet to find a 3D Mario Platformer that I have been able to enjoy. I guess I'm showing my age, but I just prefer the 2D stuff.
  • Would love it, but would rather a new Mario game altogether. I agree that Galaxy wasn't quite the same even though I also enjoyed it. I loved Mario 64 and sunshine even though I didn't initially like Sunshine as much as I do now.
  • While I enjoyed Sunshine, I am far more partial to the Galaxy games. They are easily my favourite 3D Mario titles, and a third entry would be awesome. I'd certainly be open to a Sunshine sequel, though. Been quite a few years since I last played the original.
  • I don't care to see an HD rerelease for Sunshine, I'd rather see a new Mario game, but I did like it a lot. It's no Super Mario 64, but I liked it more than the Galaxies.
  • As long as we don't get another 3D World I'll be happy. Another game similar to 64 or sunshine would be fantastic. I think 2 galaxies is enough though, I don't think 2 was as good as 1.

This. Nothing after Mario 64 really does it for me. I remember getting Sunshine about a year after it came out and being really unimpressed. A lot of the stuff on the GameCube always felt "off" to me. Very hard to explain.

Sunshine is different I agree, but after playing for awhile - getting to those high places and completeing those super hard challenges it really grew on me. It has that Mario 64 charm - but not at first. Kind of hard to explain.

I admit I didn't play Sunshine for anywhere near as long as I've played SM64, so I have no problem believing that.

This is actually a pretty good explanation. Besides the very first world or two, some of the actual level entrances can be a little tricky to get to or even find at first. I initially didn't really like the setup, but once you get into the game it feels like a more indepth Mario 64 with more challenge. There are a few Shine Sprites that are annoying as fuck to get though, but overall I think the game offers more challenge and variety than Mario 64. Having said all that I still prefer 64 for a couple reasons. Sunshine is definitely the better looking game obviously.

  • I do like Super Mario Sunshine, but it's the one Mario game I will probably never 100% complete again. Those blue coins are just so frustrating to track down!

I actually really enjoyed 3D World on the Wii U, what made you not a fan?

  • Man, I'm really surprised to read all the lukewarm opinions of the Galaxy games, I thought both games were amazingly well-crafted. They both seemed to me like those special kind of games that EGM would have given the near-impossible to achieve "10" score back when EGM gave out one of those maybe every 2-3 years.

You're crazy. 3D World was one of the best 3D Mario games yet.

I'm with you.  The Galaxy games are two of my favorite games ever.  It's been a long time since I've been so mezmorized with a game like I did with either one.

  • Mario Sunshine is a great game, brought a lot of fun and showed what the Game Cube is capable of, but overall I was disappointed. All the magazines described it as an adventure game, but it was just what some people call a 'collect-a-thon'. It wish it had been more like Banjo-Tooie or Star Fox Adventures, where there are lots of characters with problems to fix, different worlds that need revisiting, and instead of attachments for FLUDD, maybe there would have been machines that you could plug it into in order to solve puzzles or alter the world you are presently in.

I frequently replay it, but it feels like less than %50 is actually worth playing.

I liked 64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1 the best mainly because of all the options you have for movement, I think that's what makes the platforming enjoyable. In 64 they had the long jump, wall jump, side flip, back flip etc. Then sunshine gave you more options with the fludd and Galaxy with the spin when you shake the wiimote. I had the most fun figuring out different ways to get places that weren't intended, and that's where I get my replay value from. I also prefer the game being non linear. I don't hate 3D world, I just feel it was a step down.
  • Something about the Galaxy games.. I just couldn't put a lot of time into them - I felt like the challenge difficulty level had gone way down from what I was familiar with Mario 64 and Sunshine. I might need to give them another try someday.
  • I loved the Mario Galaxy games, and I also loved Mario 64 and recently played through it again. But Mario Sunshine...every time I tried to sit down and play that game, I hated it. I would play for a little while and enjoy it, wondering why I didn't like the game previously. But I felt the game's difficulty was skewed in a bad way, with everything being thrown in at the beginning, making the game not very fun. Should I give it a (fifth) chance?
