I love the premise of Bomberman and the best one I've played hands down is Saturn Bomberman.
Never played that one, but the Playstation version in 4-player mode was pretty great.
You can technically do 10 players on the Saturn version I beleive. The visuals and music is top notch as well.
I could be mistaken, but I thought the Playstation version supported 8 players if you used two multi-taps.
I never had the chance to try it, though, since I only had 1 multi-tap and 4 controllers
Shit, I don't even have 8 friends
If you had a projection TV in the 90's, that would have made for a hell of a party game, though!
No doubt! My Dad did, but we never got to play anything on it. We had a small TV in the basement there with the SNES and I had a TV in my room at my Mom's (main residence)
Never had a Saturn growing up either. I don't even think I knew about it until like 97-98. Too busy with PS and N64.
I think it's hit and miss. I don't like the adventure modes of many of the earlier ones. I enjoyed the 1P scenarios on some of the newer ones, though (N64 and onward). Also, Pocket Bomberman on the GBC is a bit of an odd duck in the franchise, and is actually more of a platformer. It's a lot of fun.
But when it comes down to it, the ones that are the most fun have the best party modes, and for me, they'd be Bomberman Party Edition (PS1), Saturn Bomberman, and Bomberman 64.
Saturn Bomberman with 10 players is the greatest party game of all time. We've managed to get 10 players only once and it was total chaos and a blast.
We've got a few others on TG16 and SNES. They're fun, too.
Saturn Bomberman is definitely my favorite! I do like Bomberman 93 quite a bit on Turbografx but you can't beat 10 player Bomberman! plus the regular mode on Saturn was really fun!
Bomberman 64 is great, and it's definitely a classic. Obviously the multiplayer is awesome. In all honesty though it's probably my least favorite of the three, just because they're all great!
I really liked Bomberman Hero. I can understand where people might dislike how much it departed from traditional Bomberman, in the way that it was more of a platformer and the unfortunate exclusion of multiplayer, but I thought it was great in its own right. The music sticks out in my mind as one of the top 10 soundtracks on the N64 for sure.
Bomberman 64: The Second Attack was actually my favorite. It took everything that was great in the first game and expanded on it, the one main difference being plus-shaped explosions instead of the circular ones in the regular Bomberman 64. As you progress you collect elemental stones which give you new types of bombs (ice, wind, light, etc). The multiplayer is everything you could ask for in a Bomberman game, there's like 5 different modes that are all fantastic. Definitely my favorite Bomberman of the three, and I think it would get a lot more praise if it wasn't so darn hard to find.

The SNES ones were our jam in the old days. I haven't tried the PS1 version, Philosoraptor, but I'll have to find a copy.

Their house actually smelled like piss and I had to just suck it up and get use to it....they had a SNES so you have to make sacrifices.

Absolutely a blast to play!
But this thread makes me want to play the series more.
