When were retro consoles most popular in recent times?

Atari 2600 : 1999 - 2005

NES: 2007- 2014

N64: 2012 - current

You can choose any  retro console/computer/handheld you want. This refers to the revival popularity only.

    Atari 2600 : 1981

    NES: 1990

    N64: 1999

Atari 800: Now (because I just finally bought one  )
  • Within their own generation? I'd say just about all consoles peaked towards the end of their lifecycle. Some didn't peak at all and had shit sales throughout. (even though some were fantastic consoles)

I've always wanted an atari 400 for the hell of it.

Experience with my Atari 5200 has soured me toward both, but I still wanted it.

At least you can use 2600 controllers on the computers I think.

Yep. My understanding is that they all used beige CX40 (standard Atari) joysticks. I'd love to find them in that less-common color.

  • I made the title clear now. I'm refering to recent eras when older consoles were most popular.

I'd say when youtubers made channels specifically about them.
  • I don't think any Nintendo console has peaked yet. They all seem to still be on the upswing in every facet. Ditto for Genesis, PS1, TurboGrafx, etc.

The only thing that peaked would be the stuff like Atari that I think has a much more niche fan base

I dunno it just seems that the nes was more popular a few years ago.

    By what metric?

No metric really just seems to me at least that N64 seems a bit more popular in terms of collecting these days. Also you don't see as much mario and nes nostalgia as you did maybe 2-3 years ago.

  • N64 has certainly gotten more popular. That's not to say NES is less popular though
  • In my own subjective opinion most interest in the N64 revolves around younger guys trying to reconnect with Smash Bros and Mario Kart 64, and full set collectors who see it as the easiest target

Popularity though? I'd say the prices, homebrew scene, books, documentaries, millions of youtubes shows, and content of this website are still very, very NES dominant

Look no further than the Steve Atwood saga for proof of that

Yes I agree, the core gamers, collectors etc. have increased and will remain if anything, which is quite evident.

Just seems that the majority ( which includes casuals, kids etc ) were just focusing on the nes at one point a few years back and it doesnt feel the same right now.

I meant in terms of popularity in relation to the mainstream, internet culture, and the overall retro gaming scene. People have branched out a lot more in recent years ex. N64  and the nes nostalgic imagery for example isnt as commonly seen as in 2007-2014ish.

There is no absolute truth and such things cannot be accurately measured, however this is what I've noticed.

  • Current Retro?

Seriously though, I feel The NES popularity didn't go away after 2014.  But then again I am a true hardcore "real" collector.

Yeah I implied currently popular/recent range of retro consoles but there is no need to mention the word current lol. Give me a break, wrote that half asleep really late last night and had to fix the title twice lol.

Nothing went away, nes just doesnt seem as popular on a mainstream level.
  • I get what you mean but still wouldn't say that the NES retro popularity as fallen since 2014. The streak still go on.

I would say it's slightly less popular in terms of what I described, that's my opinion.

  • Well, if it's just ''slightly less'' popular, than maybe it is too early to call it done, no? Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion, so I'm good with whatever you think.

Well never said it was done or anything. Just personally thought it was most popular circa 2007-2014. During 2009 - 2013 it seemed to be at its peak again in relation to what I described earlier. But everyone has their own take on this subject.
