RPG list

Ok I have all the SNES rpg's cib, most of the PS1 also except for the outrageously priced ones, for PS2 I'm missing a couple of common but good ones, 360 I have the essentials. To me the epitome of an rpg is Dragon Warrior/Quest. It's extremely simple, cliched, but deep and entertaining (at least for me). I've always preferred the swords and castles and old world settings but am not opposed to different ones. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Tales of & Fable are the 4 series I'm the most familiar with and enjoy the most and I'm looking for games that are very similar. I just decided to look into DS rpg's and maybe GBA and have discovered that there are a ton out there and even some Final Fantasy remakes that I'm wondering about. So what do yall recommend?

  • what did you go with for the SNES RPG list? I had a hard time defining some of them.

I have all the Squaresoft, Enix, EB, and a few oddball like Twisted Tales and Dragon View. There aren't any for SNES that I need. PS1 I'm missing Suikoden 2, Valkyrie Profile and both Tales games. Not sure if they're worth the money. Is that what you're asking?

  • On DS definitely play Radiant Historia. Has that Chrono Trigger time traveling thing going on but with a way better story. Basically you have to hop back and for between time lines trying different plot solutions and uncovering hidden agendas to advance the story. Failure is a big (and often amusing) part of the gameplay process.

Also shameless plug but if you want to check out my channel I review lesser known RPGs - mostly for the NES and SNES right now but that'll change as time goes on.

Heh. I love 4 Swords but you definitely need a few friends. Actually for group play Dokapon Kingdom is awesome too.

Biggest must play Zelda clone I can think of is Alundra.

If Zelda is an RPG, then would Crystalis on NES be an RPG? Or are we just looking at SNES games here?
  • I'm actually good on SNES. Looking for mostly DS, GBA, etc

Unlike Zelda, Crystalis on the NES IS actually and Action-RPG (like Secret of Mana or FF Adventure)

Most Zelda games don't tend to meet the criteria for RPGs      (it's an action-adventure)

(Zelda 2 is a traditional action-RPG, though, like Faxanadu)

  • For DS get Strange Journey and Disgaea
  • For GBA some good ones are Pokémon, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Sigma Star Saga, Mario and Luigi. Haven't play survival kids (gbc) but it looks pretty good. Does harvest moon count?

Harvest Moon would count as an RPG/Sim hybrid I would think. What is Sigma Star Saga

Part RPG, Part side scrolling shooter.

Also check out both Golden Suns, Summon Night Swordcraft Story 1 & 2, Riveria, and CIMA the Enemy.

  • I second Golden Sun games for GBA they are amazing turn-based RPGs.......Have not gotten around to playing the DS game yet however.
  • Don't know if the OP has it but the PS2 Sega Genesis collection shouldn't be overlooked since it has Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4. (Also has the rather marginal Sword of Vermillion,)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The PS3 Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection is even better - it has the three PHantasy Stars above and Shining Force I, II and Beyond Oasis.

BUT WAIT - THERE'S MORE! - it also has Golden Axe Warrior and Phantasy Star 1 as unlockables.

I do have it! Awesome collection...

  • I will second Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga for GBA if you don't have it yet. Fantastic RPG.
  • Tales of Phantasia! You have to go repro on the SNES, but the GBA version is good. I just started playing the SNES version and it might even be better than I remember.

Are the DS Digimon games worth checking out? Clearly you seem to like the collect-em-alls, but is there a narrative or mechanic draw in them beyond collecting things?

Black Sigil on the DS has a lot of promise, perhaps more than 95% of the RPGs on the system (if you're a fan of SNES ones at least), but I found it to be terribly broken to the point where I couldn't finish it.

On the other hand, Radiant Historia has to be in my top ten games of all time. It is great!

Yea I do like games similar to pokemon but the digimon ones don't really emphasize the collect em all stuff. They've got a story, and they encourage you to train your team pretty well otherwise you'll be screwed. There are no powerful "legendaries" that you can use to easily beat the game like you can in pokemon. The battle system is unique and works off of speed. Sometimes if your digimon is super fast, that digimon can get 2 or 3 hits in before your opponent gets 1 in. They're definitely worth checking out BUT, DO NOT get digimon world championship. Its not like the other 3 and really isn't that good. Digimon world ds is actually one of my favorite ds games, and dragon quest monsters joker might be my #1 on the system.
