Any fans of Electro-Mechanical Arcade games?

I find them fascinating. I think I may I have played one as kid but I can't remember for sure. I'm talking about arcade machines before pong came out. Sega, Nintendo and other companies had a lot of really cool ones in the 60's and 70s, some titles include shark attack, wild gunman, missle commando, duck hunt.

What do you think of them? Any experiences?

What I find interesting is that these were made without the use of digital technology, before video games took off, yet they seem to somewhat replicate the gaming experience of early video games but with actual physical objects and backgrounds that seem nicely designed.

It would be cool if they would release them in some form someday, small tabletop toys, or downloadable games etc.

  • For a good overview of these types of games check out the first couple hundred pages of Kent's Ultimate History of Video Games. It's a good read, and delves into a lot of the history behind pre-video games, specifically some of those you mentioned.
