NintendoAge 2016 Weekly Contests Presents: Gyruss

Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  I'm Bimmy Antilles and I'm here to lead you all into battle for the biggest war the universe has ever seen!  The evil Gyrusians from the Neutronian Galaxy have invaded our solar system and we need to take them out before they completely eradicate our civilization!  And what makes me qualified to lead you all into battle?  You ever hear the old adage "Don't look into the Death Star, or you will die?"  Well, I have looked into the Death Star and survived...twice!  Look, just because my legendary brother Wedge helped destroy both Death Stars doesn't mean I wasn't there too.  Just pop in your Star Wars movies and look for me.  I'm naturally one of the surviving pilots each time.  Anyway, due to your exceptional skills in space combat, you have all been recruited as members of my crack attack squad known as Rogue Squadron.  And your team consists of some of the best hotshot fighter pilots the galaxy has ever seen.  Flying alongside you will be Fox McCloud and his Starfox Squadron, which consists of the crackshot Falco Lombardi, the veteran and survivalist Peppy Hare, and the ace pilot Slippy Toad.  You will also have the legendary Solvalou providing you with cover-fire during this dangerous mission.  If you haven't heard, Solvalou is responsible for halting the Xevious invasion of the planet Namconia last year.  Next up is the ever cocky and colorful, but crackshot pilot known as Ghost.  He is most notable for operating the Sewer Sharks in Solar City and bulls-eyeing the mutant rats located in the city's underbelly.  Just don't let it get to you if he starts calling you Dogmeat.  You will also have ace pilot Rad Gravity covering your six while you blast the Gyrusians into space dust.  His fighting skills are rad, mad, and bad to the bone!  You will also receive assistance from the cute looking, but deadly Opa Opa from the faraway Fantasy Zone, Alf in his Mythical Melmackian Marauder (sorry, Alf, but you'll have to use lasers this time.  You won't be able to "HA!" these aliens to death), Captain Falcon in his Falcon Flyer with his signature Falcon Punch (wait, how in the hell is he going to be able to destroy an enemy spaceship by punching it?), Isaac Clarke with the USG Ishimura (actually, scratch that, the ship is infested with Necromorphs.  We want to halt an alien invasion, not start another one), and finally Cats and his fleet of Zig fighters (he will make sure that all the Gyrusian base will belong to us).  Now that you have been assigned your wing mates, it's time to fly the friendly skies...er, I mean the vast, cold, dark void of space, and conquer the Gyrusians once and for all.  This is going to be one fierce battle and it will definitely make your blood boil!  Okay soldiers, it's time to jump into your fighters and head for Neptune where the Gyrusians have set up their first outpost.  And yes, they will be all over Uranus as well.  But you will have plenty of TP for your bunghole to get them away from there.  Okay, enough chitchat.  Here's what you need to know to help you destroy the alien threat from the planet Gyruss:

  • Choose whichever controls you want

  • No point racking allowed.  If anyone is suspected of point racking, their score will be disqualified.  We are on the honesty policy for this one.  Do not point rack!  This game would not be as much fun if it were a furthest progression/low score contest.

  • Play until Game Over

  • No looping of the game allowed.  If you beat the game, you must take your picture when the game loops back to stage 1.  Anyone suspected of playing on a second loop or beyond will have their score disqualified.

  • To get your score, start a new game.  Your score will be in the high score spot.

  • Highest score wins

  • Participation: 60,000

  • GENRE: Shooter/Shoot 'Em Up

The contest ends Sunday, 7/3/16 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

  • How's the point racking work? Certain enemies or bosses?

I'm assuming its obvious enough, and easy to avoid, just wanted to be double sure since I've only played this twice so far
  • Wait, what... don't tell me you had never destroyed enemy space ships by punching them, Bimmy!

I thought you were a martial arts specialist! This should be child's play for a skilled martial artist!

I might give this game a spin tonight. Perhaps I will even fancy taking part of this week contest.

You can keep shooting enemy ships that come at you during bosses as long as you don't destroy the boss.

Not only that. You could potentially Max the score on the very first stage.

Cant say im a fan of this rule set. Leaves potential to score more points being less skilled at the game.

You would be bored out of your mind doing that. I wouldn't do that if it were allowed.

I think a 1 life rule would be a great option for this contest.

While purposely maxing out the score isn't allowed, accidentally gaining more points is. My issue isn't with purposely racking points here. It's the ability to gain more points if it takes a player longer to clear a stage.

    1 life is better.

What at about a point mark? For example closest to 1,000,000 points without going over. Or simply closest to 1,000,000 points.

Lol. Nevermind   I could just point rack as close to 1,000,000

  • I played it a bit, but forgot to take a picture and I mixed rum and tequila tonight. Not going to try it again tonight.

I agree that one life would be a better rule for this game.

These types of games are not for me but i'm putting up at least participation. see how much time i have the rest of the week since i'm getting ready for a trip. Not only that @Richardhead ;decided i owed him money for all the damages i caused in his place, he not only hired a monkey to stay there so i can't go over uninvited anymore, he put me to work selling him beer! what a cruel world for someone that just wanted to have fun at others expense!

You're just mad that you have a phobia of monkeys and I figured it out!

  • A 1-life contest wouldn't work well with Gyruss because your points and score all disappear when you enter a boss battle, making it impossible to tell if someone lost a life or not. Furthest progression/low score wouldn't be any fun at all because then no one would want to kill any enemies. Gyruss is tough to make perfect rules for because of the disappearing lives and score thing during a boss battle and the possibility of being able to point rack.

That's right,I forgot that stuff disappears when you face the bosses. Yeah,it's just one of those "we did our best with what we had to work with" rule set weeks.

I'll put up a score at some point this week. I would have done so earlier but I need to go buy a new controller first. This is the third one I've worn out.
  • I'm hoping I have the time to get in more than just a participation attempt, but this is shaping up to be a weird week for me so we'll see.

I'm not going to say that I'm good at Gyruss, but I have beaten the game before so I should do okay.
  • I'm unimpressed with this game. Lifeforce ftw.

I am playing on an NES. I took 5 different pictures before I got a decent one! I had to turn off two lights behind me and turn in the lamp to the left! New setup is a pain in my ass!

  • Ok, here's my question. I have this game, I tried to play it last night (yeah, my brief run with golf got me wanting to get involved in this again), and apparently my board is fried.

I have a PSP that is capable of emulation and therefore have the ability to play the game, just not on the original hardware. Is that acceptable? I spent about 30 minutes calling all of the local stores in my area, and no one had a copy of Gyruss (one guy actually asked why would I want it, after laughing a bit).

You sure can! SuckTendo plays almost every week on his PSP.

I'm really hoping to maybe beat this game this week. I love Gyruss. I prefer the arcade and Atari 8bit versions, but this one is still snazzy and definitely looks the best.

Thanks for the encouragement, dude. I need to make up for not participating last week. It was the first game I missed participation for this year.
