where to buy a PVM

I just got to see a PVM in action today at Too Many Games. I would absolutely love to get one but I have two main questions.

Can you run componant on a PVM?

Where should I keep a look out to buy one? Craigslist in my area is completely dry for them. Are there dealers or something that would have a few? Or should I reach out to some collectors in the area that might have one for sale?

  • I would try an electronics recycler or electronics repair/hobbyist shop first. Also thrift stores but they may be a long shot.
  • I'd try to get one sooner rather then later. Places like hospitals used to use them and now they're moving to LCD so it doesn't hurt to ask. I work at a factory/office building right now and they just recently moved buildings, but I got a chance to see the old building and in the old security room they have 3 or 4 Sony pvms that I'd like to ask about but don't know who to ask. I'm sure there are similar places around you that you could ask. Worst they could say is no
  • Yes you can component. I'd watch eBay I got mine from northern va. It's not even a top end model and still is amazing
  • I saw a couple of them there too. Streets of rage never looked so good. Good luck on your search. If I have any luck around here I will be sure to post the resources I used.
  • Not all have stereo speakers, so there is that downside if you don't have a speaker setup. I run SNES and up through a VCR for that reason, but NES looks great! Well, they all look great, but I'm guessing the ones running RF would look better if running directly through composite.
  • We got both of ours via Craigslist. The 14" we use as a test station and the 20" we use as a secondary setup for NES and SNES in the PC room. Neither are really big enough to serve as a main display, but I've done quite a bit of play on the 20", including an run of Final Fantasy VI. It looks amazing.

I'm not keen on buying one on eBay. We had a 25" given to us by a friend, we just had to pay shipping. Fed Ex fucked it up beyond repair during the shipping process. So pissed off. Not to mention, prices are crazy on eBay and that's not including shipping.
  • Thanks for the input I have my eye on a few 14'' ones on ebay. The most I would play is with 2 players on the tv sitting pretty close so I hope that a 14 would be good enough just for that.

I'm really excited for playing ps2 and gamecube on this monitor as well.

I have a question about scart though. If I'm modding my systems myself anyway, why not just use a simpler jack that goes directly either bnc or component type connectors and use pnc to component connecters on the back of the monitor. It seems like everyone uses scart to bnc connectors but why not just make cables that use the same jacks on the system and have it break out to bnc/component connectors?

What systems will you be using on it?

You can just get adapters that will take your PS2/GC component cable straight to bnc. I actually need to get some of those myself.

EDIT: Just picked these up. These should work with Composite and Component.

  • I will be using the following systems. Eventually they will be RGB modded or be using component.

    PS2

    GC/wii

    Famicom

    Snes

    Pc engine

I'm just thinking when I mod PCE, Snes, Famicom I will use the same sort of connectors and use cables that break out into RCA cables if that's possible.

Mostly cause people just buy premade stuff, or don't know much about BNC.  The nice thing about leaving stuff BNC if you can, you can also use professional grade video switchers like extron equipment.
