In praise of Hudson Joycard Sansui SSS

So was able to pick two of these up in the span of a week for under $50 combined (one at a local shop for $30 after tax and one for $19.50 on ebay shipped) and I love the damn things!

They are not as small/cramped as the original NES controller (not that I have giant hands to begin with) super comfortable to play with. Built in turbo, plus the classic Famicom look.

Definitely my favorite NES controller and probably the only thing I'll use from here on out

Welcome to the party, sir!   They're the best NES controllers you can get. I use mine exclusively. I'm on the very last level of Battletoads (it's been my #1 legendary difficult NES game to beat since forever), and I owe a lot of it to the smoothness of said controller.
  • I love the controller too, I just wish they made a version like the Famicom Joycards without the goofy audio cord.
  • What colors did you happen to get, OP? When I ordered mine there was no option, but luckily I got a badass grey and gold one. I'd love to see yours!
  • I have vague memories of hearing about this controller, but I pretty much forgot about it until this post. I'll definitely need to look into getting one, they sound great!
  • I love the Joycard! Just feels great to me, and the turbo settings are an added bonus.
  • Here is the last hype thread: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=143409. I picked one up during this excitement. Love it. Use it all the time. Haven't tried the audio though.

    got these

After going and looking at the famicom versions, I'm seriously thinking about getting a couple of those and then the famicom to NES adapter...
  • Wish I still had mine. Traded it off in a lot without realizing what exactly it was, and how awesome these are.

Exactly what I've got! Good stuff.
  • I got had one loose and one CIB. After the last praise thread, I sold the loose one for cheap and kept the CIB. Fantastic controller and I love the novelty of the audio connection.
  • Found one with my grandma back in the late 90s for a $1.

Have had it ever since, excellent controller.

Out of sheer curiosity, is it the same design/color scheme as the one posted in this thread?

    It is indeed my friend.

  • I bought one of the new old stock ones from that hype thread, and I also picked up another one recently on eBay for $8. (Sorry OP!) Great controller, I should probably use it more!
  • I can't be the only one who had this controller as a kid right? It's absolutely one if not the best NES controller you can own (the stock NES controller and dogbone are also extremely good). The only problem is the turbo function tends to break (mine never worked actually).
  • I have the one without the audio, still by Hudson, and it is great. The cord is still too short, though. I probably need to get around to modifying that.

Did the SSS come with a NES connector, or a Famicom one?
  • These have been my go to controllers for years for both the NES and Famicom. Great stuff.

I didn't even know they existed until 2015
  • This with a SNES -> NES controller adapter is my favorite controller by far.

Good stuff. I was under the impression that there were like, a dozen or so different color combos available and you just get what they picked out of the bin for you. Maybe the Japanese ones are multi-colored? I'd actually like to start collecting different versions of the SSS Sansui Joycard. Is that a thing yet here on NA?
  • Just got a boxed one on ebay for $34 shipped yesterday. Three of them is enough for me lol. Should be good to go til the end of my gaming days with the SSS

Oh I bet someone has them all sealed and graded.
  • The SSS I'm thinking only comes in grey and gold. The regular joycard controllers were available in all the different colors.

    This sounds correct.

    Most likely.
