Ha, so much snark up in this thread already. Jone's on the mark with a solid RPG. I think it definitely could've used some more shooters, since isn't Star Soldier the only one?
I don't think this text box can handle that sort of thing......
Really though it is basically a calculator compared to the PS1, there is no way they could have even FIT an RPG into one of those cartridges so that is completely out of the question without upgrading the hardware.
So I would just have to say better hardware (new console altogether)

Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and South Park is all you need!

I agree, I honestly dont understand why the system is so popular today,
Was just on ebay and it was the #1 trendng thing on ebay! WTF?

South Park was so fun and I'm not a shooter person at all!
I would have liked to seen more games in general. So many games that were on PS1 that could have been ported over that weren't.
I wouldn't be so sure of that.....N64 cartridges can only hold a maximum of 64MBs and PS1 games up to 700MB.
Yeah, I know not all games are 64MB+ but you would probably be surprised at the amount of PS1 games that "couldn't" be ported.
Plus you would just want to play the PS1 version anyway as by designed it would be superior especially in the sound department, and the graphics....and the controller.
Hmm.. I dunno man. N64 should have been disc based, but I agree with leatherrebel, PS1 had plenty of games that could have easily had been ported to the N64. However, the ports of PS1 games the N64 did receive were substandard compared to their Sony counterparts. Only upside was loadtimes, but the absence of true RPGs, top-grade crossplatform ports, and the awkwardly shaped controllers that required 3 hands to use properly pretty much ruined it for me. Don't get me wrong, I loved a lot of the games, but in the end I had more love for PS1. Final Fantasy is to blame. And Mega Man.
The n64 had the hardware to make great games but it was limited with the cart format. Had the system been disc based I wonder how many more games they would have had. I am much more fond of the ps1 in this generation because it had the games that would have been on the snes a generation earlier.

Oh, for sure, the console had some great FPS. Just a dearth of regular shooters (shmups).
I really don't get people's deal with the controller. It's not bad. Maybe it had to be one of your formative systems or something? I've always liked the controller.

I had RE2 for playstation in my teens. I also had a n64 for only Goldeneye. But after I got rid of my PSX I wanted RE2 again so got it for N64. I was damn surprised it had everything that all 2 discs of RE2 had. Just the cutscenes were more compressed.

English... do you speak it?
Did you ever hear the philosophy that once a man admits that he’s wrong, he is immediately forgiven for all wrongdoings?

If you want an answer from a true N64-first player and collector, for me it's the nostalgia of the games and the period in my life in which I first enjoyed them. When Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Worms Armageddon, WCW vs. NWO, and all those games that had fantastic 4-player multiplayer first came out, I was about 13 years old in the 8th grade, at the time in my life when having friends over to play video games as a group was the most enjoyable pastime imagineable. This was really the dawn of local 4-player multiplayer, and at the time the graphics and fidelity seemed like a big fuckin' deal. Those memories and that nostalgia just can't be denied for me. Sure I have great memories of playing Contra and Double Dragon with my brother when I was 6, and I remember playing NHL '94 and Street Fighter 2 when I was a few years older, but those memories dont stand out for me nearly as much as playing 4-player Goldeneye in the facility with no Golden Gun, no Oddjob, no proximity mines, and throwing a handful of Cheetos at a friend who just set a perfect trap for me to waltz into.
A lot of things sucked about the N64. The small library, the blurry textures, the low RAM, the controller that few swear by but most hate, but one thing that can't be denied is that the system had some AMAZING multiplayer for its time. This reads like an old-time memoir from an old vet or something lol, but I'm sure those close to me in age (I'm turning 34 this weekend) who were playing those games when they came out will know exactly what I mean

Controllers worth a shit
