Hardest games you will commit to beating one day

I would say:

Starship Hector

Ikari Warrios Series

Mutant Virus

Are on my list for the nes. Might go into other consoles/computers later on.

  • Probably TMNT. There's harder ones of course but I'm not going to commit to them. I have been trying a no death run on Contra but can only get to level 6 before dying.
  • I haven't beaten some of the Mega Man games and will do that some day.
  • Anything my children can beat if they wind up gaming in any capacity. Father must be better than daughter!
  • Never really played the Ninja Gaiden games, or Castlevania III, but I will beat all of those
  • Any game I own I'd like to beat at one point. Pocky and Rocky is a hard one
  • I'm still committed to beating Ninja Gaiden one day. I can get to the second form of the last boss but have never seen beyond that.

Also, U.N. Squadron. That game as eluded me for 25 years.

I've also never legitimately completed Metroid from start to finish but I will one day soon.

I'm not sure that I really have the stability to power through Ghosts 'n Goblins. It's one of those games that hits a point in the later stages where the frustration outweighs the fun and I start throwing obscenities at the TV.

And what with the recent news about the upcoming remake/remaster of System Shock (holy hell, you wouldn't believe how excited I am for this), I'm going to be revisiting System Shock 2 and finish the final stage this time. Those were some of the best games ever made.
  • Now that I can beat Battletoads, I'd like to beat Ghosts n Goblins just so I can say that I did. Unfortunately the clunky NES port of GnG isn't nearly as much fun to play as Battletoads.

The easiest way is to make it to that boss with the spin-slash attack and kill it with one hit. I had to do that when I beat the game for the first time.

Im pretty sure once you fight the first boss form in area 6 you lose all your magic.  Unless you mean to beat the first form, die, and then start over from 6-1 and get the spin slash.  Thats WAY harder than just practicing his feel IMO.

I had no idea you could do this until recently.  I beat this as a kid and what my brother and I would do is come fully stocked with fire weapon.

The stratergy was always to beat the first form and then you would die on the second because you were out of the fire weapon.  Then start 6-1 again and come back to the 2nd form with full fire and beat it.  Amazing how people would play games so different.

The ideal way is to beat all forms in one go with the sword, but that takes a bunch of practice.

I still think that the Ninja Gaiden 2 final bosses are even more difficult to beat with the sword, especially the second form.

  • After over a year of serious dedication (and a lifetime of half-assed attempts), I'm finally on the last level of Battletoads NES. This will be by far my hardest NES game completed. Last summer it was Zelda II, this summer it's Battletoads.

I'm also stuck on looping the last level of Ninja Gaiden due to not being able to beat the boss.

So, my list looks like this right now:

    #1 - Battletoads

    #2 - Ninja Gaiden

    #3 - Silver Surfer

    #4 - Ghosts 'N Goblins
  • I should beat Zelda II someday. I got to the Thunderbird boss as a kid and haven't made any serious attempt at beating it since.

I never beat Castlevania III either.

It's easier for most beginners to get back to the second form with the spin-slash than it is to learn to beat the second form with the sword.

  • Ikari Warriors....

    Big surprise, I know!
  • Zelda II. Not sure how hard it is in the grand scheme of things, but it's difficult enough for me. I'm hoping to have it completed by the end of the summer.

I never beat Castlevania III either.

Go for Castlevania 3 it can finished in a few days.

  • Castlevania III

Although 25 years later I still haven't beaten Castlevania 1

Which part do you have trouble with in Castlevania? Frankenstein and Grim Reaper are easily killed with the holy water.

  • Madden 2001, on Expert Mode.
  • On the NES, Destination Earthstar and Deadly Towers come to mind -- the latter making my own maps, and not following a walkthrough (I beat it 10+ years ago in an emulator with a walkthrough).

On other systems, I still want to beat Shadow of the Beast II (Genesis) on Ridiculous difficulty. I came close a couple of times...
  • I've finished quite a bit already but my next few are going to be:

    Battletoads

    Silver Surfer

    Ninja Gaiden 3

Grim Reaper (without a game genie LOL). I've seen a video that suggests that strategy (you experts make it look sooo easy.   )but I haven't sat down and tried it.

Now that I've seen what the ending is like I"m not sure it's worth it.

BTW, last time I tried it even with a Game Genie I still couldn't beat Drac. LOL

Castlevania Chronicles on the PS1 was another. Maybe the 4th boss was too tough.

Where are you getting hung up on Energy Zone? The first part is easiest if you jump across to the platform with the first turret gunner, take out his buddy, then drop down one level and get the sniper. Then get past the first flame thrower and take out the gunners on the bottom. Then it's a matter of patience with the flamethrowers before you snag the barrier and can then breeze through all the way to the boss (robotic stompy SJW trigglypuff).

I still haven't devised a foolproof strategy for the alien heart, but if it's going to happen, that's where I usually end up dying.

You can also kill the knights with one hit with the holy water, making the section with the knights and madusa heads leading up to the Grim Reaper much easier.

  • Megaman 2 without using continues.

I am so terrible at it, I died to Metalman on the Willy stages using Metal Blade.

Which ones? At least for the NES ones, they get easier after the third one.

  • I keep telling myself that one day I would like to beat Castlevania III. Never did as a kid, and a few years ago I mistakenly went to the Sunken City and got fed up. Love watching speed runs of it, but I don't know if I can muster the dedication to actually beat it myself.
  • I'd like to beat at least one of the other Mega Man NES games this year. I've only ever beat 2. I'm just awful at them for some reason.

Seeing some of these responses makes me feel like a BA for beating Castlevania III (and all of the other non-Metroidvania games in the series) and Zelda II

I've beaten the first Castlevania, Castlevania IV and Rondo of Blood. But for some reason I've never played Castlevania III much.
