Seeing some of these responses makes me feel like a BA for beating Castlevania III (and all of the other non-Metroidvania games in the series) and Zelda II

I've beaten the first Castlevania, Castlevania IV and Rondo of Blood. But for some reason I've never played Castlevania III much.

Best in the series in my opinion! It was a pretty brutal experience, but definitely rewarding once you "master" each level to progress.

  • Probably the last one I will legitimately beat is Double Dragon 3.

And no, I don't really consider that to be "hard"... it's challenging but I wouldn't put it anywhere near games like Battletoads or Ghost N' Goblins. Battletoads I can easily max the score and get to the Terra Tubes. GNG I can complete after hacking through. Which can be fun. But I can't come close to beating either of them.

Most other games I've accepted the fact I will only see the final stages and ending is with a Game Genie. I'm actually excited to see some new levels I haven't seen before (in Amagon for example).

As we know... you literally have to learn every enemy, every jump, and every stage. I don't have the time, or patience to bother with alot of that anymore. This is truly why I think NES/SNES (and others of that generation) are the most difficult and best games. Because you need to learn EVERYTHING about the game in order to master it and beat it. Only when you "master" a game can you beat it.

Today's games are open and unlimited. There's no starting over. You just start from where you last saved or whatever.

There's no getting to the 3rd level, dying, and then having to start over. 4th level. 5th level. 6th. 7th. Boss. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Kids today have it easy. Give a 10 year old Contra. That's what I say.

  • 1) Contra actually is harder with 2 players. But they should at least give the kids the manual to read. And maybe give them a couple pointers. Like "shoot lots".

    2) These kids are clueless. (Not only about NES it seems)

It's funny how foreign these games are to them.

In all the years I've played Contra and literally the hundreds of times I've beat it (maxed it out as well) I have NEVER ran completely through the large gun at 4:05. Wow. I must admit... I have never done that. I always just shoot them. I'm a little sheepish.

"In Call of Duty you can get shot like 10 times... that's cheating (that you die when you get hit)"

    Haha... kids will never understand.

I have to admit I laughed my ass off watching this. Are video games so easy nowadays that these kids consider themselves good?

Not "easy" in the strictest sense, just that game publishers'/developers' greatest fear today is to get criticized for "wasting the player's time", so they litter modern games with all the tools they can think of to keep the player in forward momentum. Auto-saves, mini-maps, objective markers, infinite lives/retries, in-game adjustable difficulty. They also want players to feel like they "got their money's worth" and want you to reach the end of the game. Counter-productive to have the player replay the opening stages over and over again.

None of these ideas are objectively bad per se but they create a very different atmosphere and environment of expectations for the player than those of us who played video games in the 70's, 80's and 90's had. It's a shift of the gaming climate, as it were, and players that are used to the new climate are not properly prepared for that older, more punishing mentality.

Which ones? At least for the NES ones, they get easier after the third one.

I beat Mega Man 1 and 6, and the rest I've only played here and there (but I've seen people speed run 2 and 3 a lot).

  • I'll join in the Castlevaina III crowd, still to this day I haven't beaten it.
  • Legacy of the Wizard. Picked it up twice last year, and still couldn't do it. That third boss is nuts. Some day...

Which part do you have trouble with in Castlevania? Frankenstein and Grim Reaper are easily killed with the holy water.

Grim Reaper (without a game genie LOL). I've seen a video that suggests that strategy (you experts make it look sooo easy.  &nbsp but I haven't sat down and tried it.

Now that I've seen what the ending is like I"m not sure it's worth it.

BTW, last time I tried it even with a Game Genie I still couldn't beat Drac. LOL

Castlevania Chronicles on the PS1 was another. Maybe the 4th boss was too tough.

You're my Ninja Gaiden coach, mdb39 - and I'll be your CVIII coach   You can do it!

I had no idea so many NA-ers were still having trouble with this game! I'm actually very proud to say I've legit completed Dracula's Curse and can (almost) do it every time I play now. We should start a support thread for CVIII; I'd love to help guide folks who are having issues.
  • metal gear solid on orig playstation...

my wife watched me play that entire game. she really got into it and the characters...especially meryl. after all these years she still gives a hard time for letting meryl died lol. i got tired of pressing that botton a million times. finally i gave up just so i could continue the game. as most of you know, there were several endings depending on what happened & what you did or didnt do in the game. i always intended on trying it again, but moved on to other things i wanted to play. but one day....

    Yeah! I'll help too!

Seriously, just take your time and learn each level. The password save system allows you to stop between each one and catch your breath. It may take a week or so to learn the levels well enough to get through each one, but its definitely worth it in the end.

I beat it with Sypha my first time through. One day I'll go back and try the other characters.

Castlevania games (that I've beaten) ranked by difficulty:

    1. III

    2. I

    3. Bloodlines

    4. Chronicles

    5. IV

    6. Dracula X

    7. Adventure

    8. Legends

    9. Belmont's Revenge

    10. Simon's Quest
