I Want to Get Back into Playing Pokemon...

What's up NA?

So, I'll make this as succinct as possible: I've been a fan of Pokemon since Red and Blue, LOVED Gold and Silver, and sort of fell out of it with Ruby/Saphire. I haven't played anything except Red or Blue over the last 10 years or so. I'd love to get back into it and see all the advances the game and system have made.

My main question for all the Pokefans here is: are the newer games worth getting a new handheld for (I don't own ANYTHING atm), and are the games just as good if not better than my nostalgic biases?

My main concern is that I'm going to end up getting a 3DS or whatever the hell is out now, Pokemon Sun/Moon when they launch, enjoy it for a month, then never pick it up.

This is what happened when I got the new DS Lite with Mario Kart DS. I was obsessed for a week then ended up selling it two years later when I realized it was collecting dust on my shelf. I'm craving a game like Pokemon because it satisfies the RPG thirst in my soul, but has more variety than a linear quest. There's just something very satisfying about leveling up a customized party and kicking ass. I'm hoping to jump back in when Sun/Moon launch so I can enjoy other people also being excited, and feel like I'm participating in a relevant, modern game for a change.

  • Here's the thing, if you get a 3ds, that's 7 different Pokémon games you can play, once sun/moon is out. I can't tell you if you'd get bored of them or not but there is a lot more to do in them, compared to gen1/2. I will admit that I've usually played the newer ones for a week and then forget about them though

That's my main fear; too many possibilities = analysis paralysis = don't play at all, lol.

Thank you for your honest analysis, BBC!

no problem! If you can find someone to lend you a Ds/3ds I'd say try out HG/SS because you like gen 2 so it's familiar but you get to see most of the new mechanics. If you don't like it, you probably won't like sun/moon. Theyve added A LOT since gen 2 so it may be overwhelming. But there are some nice additions like TMs aren't one time use anymore(think that was added in black and white)
  • You could get a Game Boy Advanced and have about the same amount of options aswell. It just depends on your preference. You want nostalgia or do you want new?
  • Pokemon X and Y have a lot of the newer features, pseudo-3D world, and you can customize your character. The newer games tend to give you friends that more or less travel with you, so you'll get more dialogue than in the earlier games with just a solo mission and talking to other trainers that beeline towards you if you cross their visual path.

I was in the same boat as you, stuck on Red/Blue for a long time. The game that broke me out of that was Pokemon Platinum for the DS. I went from never playing other Pokemon games to being eager to catch all (I think it was) 650 pokes. I did just that and enjoyed it quite a bit!
  • Pokemon X and Y are worth getting a 3DS for alone. I've got a few hundred hours into those games. Throw in the Sapphire and Ruby and theres a TON of content. You can catch every Pokemon within those 4 games. Also Sun and Moon come out in November, so theres even more Pokemon goodness.

I really think you would enjoy X and Y if you're a fan of the old games. They have some awesome starters, and some incredible Pokemon you can find early on. It wont leave you feeling overwhelmed.
  • Yes. They are amazing.

You have the new ones coming out plus the 2 that are already out R&S and X&Y.

The added features really give the game depth, and the wonder trade alone gave me hours of gameplay. You never know what you will get, i got a few legendaries and even shinies.

Add the awesome graphics for a pokemon game and the game really is a ton of fun even as an adult.
  • You "have"to get a 3DS.........like others have said I dumped literally almost 700 hours into X/Y they are just "that" good.

Hopefully will do the same with Sun/Moon.
  • Yeah, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are my favorites, but I've beaten all four, and gotten all 719. I started with Red and Blue and lost interest in Gen III and IV, but since coming back I can definitely say they're worth getting a 3DS for. I've probably got 600 hours between OR/AS and X/Y, with 400 hours on the version I have all 719 on.

that and the new GBA Everdrive is up for preorder. so you dont even have to dump the money into the actual carts, plus a ton of other games to play too

  • It's definitely worth it, I spent over 500 hours on Pokemon X alone. Plus if you buy a 3ds you can play every game from the DS series too.

What did you think of black 2. I picked up a dsi for $5 black 2 cost me $20. I played it pretty good for a week now I only play it occasionally. The only other Pokemon game I played is blue back in the day.

  • Pokémon Revolution Online. It's a MMO with currently the regions from the first 3 games (they just added Hoenn) and they are eventually going to add all of them up until X and Y (though newer Pokémon from that game will be in). No breeding and no legendaries outside of Mew (after a long quest) and Suicune (given away as a prize) but you end up seeing more variety in the teams people use. Also the levels for gyms are jacked up a bit so it's a bit more of a challenge. I highly recommend it. I had got back into Pokémon with Heart Gold but the games after had slowly started drive me back away. Got this on my computer and I have been addicted again.

Servers are iffy at times cause of all the traffic but they are constantly working on it.

Black 2 was actually pretty good but I didn't care for a lot of the Pokemon designs.

To me most of the game is in the end game, the story is pretty much the same for every single game form G/S onward.

  • The nice part of the 3DS games is you can catch every Pokemon and swap between the 4 games, and its all very easy. Combined with Pokemon bank, it all integrates so nicely. Even the gen 1 remakes will be compatible with the gen 7 games, so you can play those and send your Pokemon to your Sun and Moon games, which is neat too.

Combine that with monthly mythical Pokemon every month this year makes getting a 3DS pretty much a no brainer.
  • I'm the same way! Except I stopped playing at Yellow.

I feel like I'm so far out of the loop with the new Pokemon and game mechanics that I can't get back into it.

It's not so hard to get into it, X and Y are really easy and a good way to dip your toes back into the series. It would be pretty tough to learn the new types and whats effective against them, but you can easily level up your party and have a well balanced team early on.

  • Im also nostalgia blind for the original red and blue versions. Luckily, my wife enjoys the newer ones, so i get a SMALL taste of them (i tend to lose interest in them, and the whole one file thing makes it a slight pain in) ill help her on her files though once in a while. TBH though, I get tired of playing them after about an hour and then just pass it back to her and gripe about how the old ones are my preferred versions...

I just prefer the original pokedex I think. SOME of the newer guys are kinda cool, Like garchomp and a couple of the dark/psychic guys, but overall I think its just the preference of the Red/Blue/Yellow pokedex that makes my attempt at the new games so lackluster.
  • Guys, I am from that generation...I was a kid when Pokemon was huge, I have all the original 4-5 card sets mint/complete, I have my original red/blue/yellow/gold/silver/crystal games.....

X/Y and new gen are the "SHIT"! Red/Blue honestly kind of blow ass compared to the newer games....the scope of the new gen games are fucking amazing.

Pokemon games are one of those rare occasions when the newer games make the older ones look out-dated.

Nailed it. I played Red earlier this year and it was a bit of a bore compared to the new games. You can blow through the game with your starter and a Nidoking and a good psychic type. I was about 12 levels lower than the Pokemon Champion and still swept his party. You can't do that in the new games, you'd get crushed. With dual types and more types in general, battling is a lot more complicated in the new games. Not to mention there is a crapload of stuff to do in the new games, and you don't need to just wander in the grass waiting for a particular Pokemon to show up, theres lots of ways and different conditions to catch certain ones.

I was 12 when Red and Blue came out, and i've played every game in the RPG series, and X and Y are the best games in the series by far.

The 4 gen 6 games are damn near perfect.
  • I'll be honest, I've also been a big fan of Pokemon since Red/Blue, and I didn't really enjoy X/Y. I'll fully admit gen 1 is really old and fairly terrible these days, but I can't say X/Y are "really good". I played them once, and never went back to them. The visuals are certainly impressive, but compared to Black 2 and White 2, they're really lacking in content. Say what you will about Black/White 1, (because they really did suck) but Black 2 and White 2 were so full of content and extra things to do that X/Y felt like a massive step backwards despite the fancy new engine.

Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, and Black 2/White 2 were the best ones if you ask me, with Gold/Silver overall being the best of the series. If your favourites are Gold/Silver, I'd recommend you start with Diamond/Pearl since they're probably the most similar to them.
  • I really enjoyed the newer pokemons for the 3ds and think those games alone are worth getting a 3ds for if your a pokemon fan. Pokemon keeps coming out with new features with every generation and the online functions for the game are alot of fun as well.
  • Wow, thanks for the honest replies, guys! It's good to know I'm not the only one running with nostalgia. It's also good to know many of you felt the same, but overcame it and actually enjoyed the newer games. Believe me, I'm super tempted. It's very hard for me to justify a big purchase like this for myself in the middle of the summer, lol. I'll keep you all posted!
  • Funny thing is soon there will be 5 full Gens of Pokemon to play on the 3DS. That's alone makes the 3DS worth it IMO, and I'm betting Gen 2 will be added to the VC by next year as well.

The Gen 4 games will probably give you the most single player (i.e. story mode objectives) due to their large post games and being arguably the hardest in the series. Just skip Diamond/Pearl and get Platinum. Also the Pokewalker that comes with HG/SS is swag.

Gen 5 has probably the best story in the series, at least in terms of Pokemon standards. You won't need a 2nd system if you want to port Pokemon to Gen 6 if you start off here.

Gen 6 is very streamlined and offers the most customization in just about every way, but they're also the easiest games yet to beat and don't have too much endgame content. Mega Pokemon will probably mean more to older fans than younger.
  • I think you can also get the older games digitally (if you are into that), RBGY if I am correct, maybe not Green.
  • Yeah dudes, I'm leaning more and more toward doing it. I'd like to find a used 3DS and copy of X on here if possible, not really looking to do brand new because I know the second I do get one Nintendo will drop the newest one lmao.

Sounds like my oldest he was big into it as well damn cards were everywhere and he had to have all the games or die. Now he's moved over to YuGiOh...moar cards yay...

My youngest was given a gba emerald with the label missing and dead battery I fixed it up for him, he likes the "monsters" as he calls them so his interest is gaining.

I feel like it's one of those things you had to be into as a kid to really enjoy. If I didn't play the games as a kid, I'd probably find them extremely frustrating. XD
