SNES is too damn expensive, that's why I don't collect it anymore
This is where I'm coming from. I'm not a complete set collector for systems, but all of the games I'm interested in owning or just playing for the SNES are ridiculously expensive. I also don't see many carts in the wild, be it yard sales or game stores.
Luckily I grabbed quite a few of the heavy hitters pre-2010, but there are still so many essential games over ~$75 cart only and I'd rather just get an everdrive and focus on other systems.
From my experience, the SNES is more popular than the N64 as far as overall gameplay in concerned. But, I've found that the N64 is a more popular system for people trying to get a full set because a full N64 collection is a more realistic goal for most people compared to a full SNES set.

Yeah as far as gathering all the games I want to play for each system, SNES reigns as the most expensive by far. Despite initially not being a fan of the Wii I've been delving into Wii collecting since the titles that interest me are on the cheap side and mostly easy to find. Because of this I have been playing the system a lot more lately and may have found a new appreciation for it. It's still no SNES or N64 but the games are much more affordable.
I'm personally blown away at how high the common, leading franchise games have become on both SNES and N64. I'm seeing games like Link to the Past and Smash Bros. hit $50. The franchise games are higher on SNES and N64 than their NES counterparts. The SNES uncommons seem to be on-par (or sometimes outpacing NES) at this point. The obscure N64 games don't seem to be doing much right now... there just don't seem to be a lot of hidden gems for that system to get player/collectors excited. The N64 library just seems really shallow; if it's not an obvious favorite like GoldenEye or Mario Kart, it's probably just an obsolete sports game or shovelware.
Correct.
It wasn't too long ago (2008-2012ish) that you could get a stack of NES/SNES/Genesis titles - all killer and decently tiered - for similar/fair prices, regardless of the console. I'd leave with piles of games for less than $50. Play N Trade started catching on to price charting, ebay, amazon, etc - but I'd always talk them down. There's nowhere like that (at least around here) anymore.
That time frame is also the most common time frame given for the great recession in the US.
Since when was the N64 ever in higher demand than the SNES!? Of course more of the wanted titles are going up in price. But there are so few in comparison to the SNES.

SNES, in my anecdotal experience, is red hot right now. NES seems like its on the decline a bit, while N64 is growing in popularity.
