I'm at 199 PS2 games, but the bulk of them are fillers I wanted to get out of the way when I found them cheap. Half-priced books clearance sale for the bulk of them. My two most expensive PS2 games would be Capcom vs SNK 2 and Monster Rancher 3. Worth like $15 tops each, and I spent like $50+ on them each since I bought them new back in the day.
I have a fair amount of PS2 (probably over 200) but OG Xbox is what I've really been going after. It's cheaper than PS2 and most of the multi-plat games are better on Xbox. Easier set to complete as well with some very cool variants and accessories.
I'm at almost 200 games...I think it's still my largest library of games.
I'd say about...150 of those are from back in the day when they were new...I was a huge fan of the PS2. I kept nearly all my games.
I would never collect a full set of the PS2...there's just way to many games. That being said I do collect console exclusives as well as multiplat popular games. So if it was released on the GC/Xbox as well I'll go for the PS2 version 99.9% of the time unless the other versions have something different about them. It's just my favorite console of that era by far. It also helps my GC/Xbox libraries to just have console exclusive games.
Pretty much this ^. I'm hovering around 180 at the moment. I can't see myself going for much more than 250 as I have most of what I consider hidden gems and games I want. The library is so huge so I'm sure there's a game here or there that I haven't even discovered yet. Only time will tell but I don't plan on going for even a half full set.
I try to stick with exclusives or PS2 over GC/XBox/DC versions unless something is unique about them (such as Skies of Arcadia Legends for GC). Plus some people forget that PS2 also does component out just like Xbox does, except for when you're trying to play some PS1 games.
When I think single player console gaming, PS2 is easily one of my top 2 consoles of all time because there's something for everyone. Most games still hold up today and a lot of great ones were given PS3 and/or PS4 remasters which speaks to the ongoing legacy of PS2.
I also believe PS2 sold more consoles than any other gaming system to date IIRC. I know some would attribute the sales to PS2 also being the cheapest DVD player back in the day.
When you really sit and think about it, PS2 was the end of the golden age of gaming. It was the last era where games were 100% finished when you bought them...no DLC and patch updates to worry about...no Youtube around at the time to quickly view gameplay, and some early (but sometimes unreliable) multiplayer games such as Battlefield Modern Combat, etc... Plus PC gaming was at a great high point in the Windows '98 and Windows XP era (at least for me and my small group of friends) so when I wasn't on consoles, I was definitely on PC.
PS2 is certainly a worthy console to collect for if you're a true gamer who appreciates the good and bad in every console. You're bound to find games you like!
I have 94 PS2 games. Not my largest game library, to which Atari 2600 is, but I enjoy buying the 'series' on the PS2. By that, I mean I have all the Ratchet & Clanks, Raymans, Crash Games, Sly Cooper, God of War, Jak & Daxter Etc. Too many games on the PS2 to have all of them (especially considering the PAL library is even larger, consisting of about 2500 titles.) Trying to beef it up by getting all the Sonic games CIB for it. Just missing two now.
Wish i could get into PS2 collecting but i have too many fears of scratched discs, disc rot etc, a game may seem fine and play fine all the way until the last cutscene and it starts skipping and dies all because of some micro scratch you didnt notice and you won't know until you play through the game
YES!!!!! This is why I absolutely dont collect any systems w/disc games. PS2/XBOX collecting would be a blast but cannot deal with the fragility...
1200 games down, still need about 500 tho!!! An awesome system to collect for thats for sure. I am seeing titles spiking lately which is a challenge in its own right. Then theres all the already expensive titles. Of all the enormous library systems, this one has the lowest shovelware ratio.
Here's my current collection minus about 20 games that I picked up yesterday. The shelved ones, ones in front of the wii games, and ones on the right of the cabinet are organized. Thefour rows to the left of the cabinet haven't been alphabetized with the rest yet. One major negative about ps2 collecting is the room it takes up.
My most recent add was ms saga. That game has alluded me for too many years. Bit the bullet and paid 50 on ebay. Love gundam, love rpgs. Win win.
Last month I had an opportunity to get that game for $5 on another forum but since I didn't know what it is about I got RAD: Robot Alchemic Drive instead, I was not pleased with my decision.

What!? RAD Is a significantly better and more interesting game. MS Saga is a generic anime rpg while RAD is a quirky, bizarre, hillarious game that happens to capture giant monster battling like no other game. Fantastic game, and in the long run i think you'll find yourself do better value wise even if that's not quite the case today.

I think either way you made out. RAD is supposed to be pretty cool. Although from what i hear once the gimmick of the radio controlled robots wears off the actual fighting becomes a bit stale.
Both cool mech games IMO, Man $5 though where the hell was i lol
Battle engine aquila is also awesome if you like mech games!! For its time it did an amazing job of scale.

It's the controls, it took me an hour to figure out how to get inside the robot only to realize you can't, you can only tag along in the first few battles.
The pawn shop I go to sells Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Nes, Snes, Sega all for a $1.50 but theirs hardly anything there most of the time now because resellers (How I know they're resellers is because they list things on ebay BEFORE checking out) hit'em up three times a week.
Back in September of last year I got a pretty good stack of games like these:
Metroid Prime
Pokemon Colosseum
Custom Robo (Hidden Gem if there ever was one)
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Game Boy Player Disc
FF7
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Street Fighter V. SNK
SNK V. Street Fighter 2
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Sadly Zombies Ate My Neighbors was given to a "friend" that moved and cut all lines of communication with me, using douche!
My local Pawn Shop sales Xbox, PS2, and GC games for either $1-$2 (depending on who is working). I've found some great steals like Suikoden V, Def Jam New York, etc... Recently though the selection is down and I suspect someone has finally found my honey hole. Still find some decent deals but the number of titles available has decreased
Got this lot to add to the collection today from Trade N Games in Fenton:
Sitting at 1095 now. I feel like I hit a wall after 800. It's not that you can't find the titles, it's just that they are almost always overpriced or you have to buy them in lots with dozens of games you don't need/want.
Interestingly, I'm in the process of purging my PS2 collection. Every time I look at the shelf, I see games (RPGs especially) that I'll never get around to playing. My 8, 16, and 32 bit collection is enough to keep me busy for 3 lifetimes. I'll probably continue to cull as much as possible.
The PS2 is cool, has some great games, but too damned time consuming.
Sitting at 1147 now. Still waiting on some more in the mail and one that's on hold at a local game shop. Somehow just added 2 madden games (11 and 12) to the collection. Not sure how they have eluded me this long.

Wow.....that is nuts dude. Storing those must be insane. But now i understand your other post in the wife thread where you said you are running out of room. Now i can see why!!
I only have 100 titles at the moment, but i knocked out most of the RPG's and expensive ones out first. I have a TON of commons to snatch up soon enough.
Looking to add Kya soon. Seems like a fun platformer.
1147 wow! That's quite a feat. It's one of my top 2 or 3 systems of all time and I still don't see the need to go above maybe 250-300 games. Too many sports games and shovelware, as with every console. I think if maybe I owned only 1 or 2 consoles total, then 1,000+ games wouldn't seem so bad. After all, I have thousands of games just between 3 Everdrives, not counting any physical games.
There's also a good amount of PS2 titles which have PS3 remasters so I'd rather have the better looking and sounding versions/compilations. Although a few games might be worth owning both versions like FF X or KH where not everyone was happy with some of the changes. Then something like the Ratchet and Clank games or Tomb Raider Trilogy are all superior on PS3.
Good luck finding the time to play 60% of them unless you're only putting in a couple hours or less per game. Awesome job so far though, must be fun hunting them all down. I just looked over my remaining wishlist of PS2 games and there's nothing that's expensive or rare. It's a great time to collect for PS2 and even a good chunk of PS3 games.

You are correct - it's getting pretty bad. The shelf on the right was originally for PS2/Xbox/GC. PS2 then took it over, then the floor
then the other floor, then the bed (though my inlaws were here about a week ago, so the bed is mostly cleared at the moment.)
It does make me feel better know that I'm over half way done and my basement will have a lot more shelf space

I mean, I'd love to see a complete set one day, I just don't want to be the guy putting it together.
The issue I'd have with getting a complete set is all the useless shovelware/sports titles that aren't worth the material used...

got to love polyphony digital!
Definitely has some of my favorite games on it (dq8, tony hawk, drakengard...just to name a few)
What are some of the good hidden gems for it?
