Shatterhand... Where have you been all my life?
This game is awesome. Been playing it over the weekend and wow...
Tight controls, sweet music, sweet graphics, and awesome power moves and upgrades.
This is one of those "read about on NA" games. When games get mentioned a few times around here in the right places I will pay attention. Beat 'em ups, shooters, platformers... I like all those. So when experienced gamers talk about games like Shatterhand I wait for it and grab it when I can.
I tend not to look at any gameplay videos because I like to experience the game fresh. This was one of those games I had no idea what I was getting myself into.... and it's AMAZING.
When I picked up my first three icons, my jaw literally dropped and I started kicking ass (should I say "punching ass"??) with a floating robot friend. I saw I could change the icons, and starting playing around with the different combinations. I figured there were 8 I could make. Turns out (read the manual) there is. The "B-B-B" Bomb guy is my favourite and I use him alot.
I also realized, after reading the manual, I could get the same set of 3 icons twice in a row and turn into some super metal terminator. That's pretty radical.
It's like Ninja Gaiden meets Batman meets Amagon meets Powerblade meets Double Dragon. So sweet.
So... the game starts out somewhat "easy"... but then somewhere along the way it gets pretty tough. I was thining it would be about as hard as Bionic Commando or Powerblade. Providing a somehwat taxing playthrough. Ummm... I was wrong.
I mean... Levels A-E are decent enough (infinite continues helps). But F... damn.
And the final level??? F*#! .... I've gotten through a few of the boss battles and what seems like a pretty good chunk of the way through. But holy crap, it's demoralizing. I'm sure the final boss is going to be pretty harsh.

Awesome game!! This is actually up there with the best on the system for me. I beat it no death or 1 life last year during the contest week.

Yeah, I can understand why it's at the top of your list.
Holy shiat.... I was just hacking my way through it. 1 life? Yowza... I need some time and to get a good groove on the final level before I'll be able to do that.
That last level, though... Takes a SHARP increase in difficulty. I was cruising along like "I'll have no problem finishing this game today"... to "holy crap, this game is hard as f#@!"
Fun as hell, though.
Btw. This is a game that I definitely turn the sound UP!!! Awesome soundtrack here.
Haha, yeah. Killer soundtrack and love the total destruction of the bosses and level complete music.
It's high on my wanted list, but it seems to escape my grasp
It'll be yours one day, man. One day!
Also, if I find another copy I know who to send it to! I'm pretty sure you just called dibs....
I'm pretty sure you can go in to each boss battle right after gaining a "power suit" and just go in Balls to the wall.
Okay... I am still working on getting consistent at that last level. It's a doozy.
I sure love that power suit.
ssB is the best combo. My favorite natsume NES game for sure!
aaB? Haha, just kidding. The lazer??? I think that's what I finally used to beat F and that damned Ninja.
I'm with you on the last level. Spent a few hours on it before I had to give up. Great game other than that though!
Yeah... it's ridiculous. I wouldn't mind if it was a little closer in difficulty to the other levels. Going to be nice to finally finish, though. Only been at it a few hours, really. Need to put more time in. But I won't be ashamed to bring out the genie if I can't. This one I'm going to give the old college try. Especially considering the continues. Not that I would consider it beaten, but the way I can go at it now... If I can get somewhat consistant at the final level, I think I'd have a pretty good shot at actually beating the game.
In terms of gameplay, I got stuck on a few levels because of difficulty and consulted Youtube. Afterwards, the game became much easier, knowing the enemy patterns and icon combos. I haven't completed the game yet, so I can't comment on everything in the thread, but I will agree that the difficulty ramp is crazy. Certain parts of the game are cake if you have the right upgrade, and certain other parts are brutal no matter what. Excellent title, though!
P.S. > I've known about the game for a long time, but like AirVillain I've avoided gameplay videos for the day when I find the game. Well, I'm starting to think that day will never come and I'm sick of being out of the loop
Another one I've never played, but heard plenty about here on NA! I definitely need to check this one out ASAP.
This is the exact thing I would have said to myself last week if someone else made this thread, haha... One I couldn't pass up anymore.
What I like most is that there's still games THIS GOOD that I haven't played yet. So, finding one cool like this is fun. I kind of like it even better because it gives me hope that there's other good games out there too, haha. But really... Shatterhand is going to be near the top I think. I love Powerblade, though.... and Powerblade 2 would be neat, if it wasn't going nuts in price.

Shatterhand is awesome. I finished it for the first time last year. It took a little bit of practice. I found that the helper bot that fires projectiles at roughly a downward 45 degree angle worked the best for me. It allowed me to take many enemies out from a distance and fight certain boss patterns from farther away.
Yeah... in the beginning I didn't really bother getting the appropriate robot for each boss. I did with level F, though. aaB... Lazer-bot, I believe.
Going to really have to pay attention for the last level.
As you might be able to gather from my avatar, this game is possibly my favorite title on NES. (I hate to say Little Samson since it's so popular!) I played it for the first time a few months ago and was blown away that such a game could fly under the radar.
Played it a few months ago and it's your favourite game? I believe that, haha. It's awesome.
honestly this game kicks ass minus the last level.... That is a total turn off for me I went from super engaged to screw this and haven't touched it since. It reminded me a lot of whomp em in that aspect
I get it... the last level is BRUTAL. I kinf of just accepted it and was happy for the unlimited continues.
After I accepted the sharp rise in difficulty and started taking the level one enemy at a time, I had mroe success. As I got through a few more bosses I gained confidence. But then... I got stuck at another part. Before the 3-4 boss I think. Died in the exact same spot a few times.... shut it off. Playing through it again will help gett the hang of it a bit.
After reading this, I gave Shatterhand a try in an emulator. Played through three stages and glad I did. Great game, although the difficulty is tough enough as it is to where you really have to go through methodically, so I can't imagine how hard the last level is.

Good to know other people do that, haha. I've avoided checking out a list of games. Even when I was looking for Archon, a game I had as a kid, I refused to look it up.
I think it was last year when I beat Shatterhand. That last stage is brutal for sure. I think I spent a couple of hours grinding it out to win.
Nice! Yeah... I feel yeah. Going to really have to memorize that final level.
Final stage is tough, but like any tough NES platformer (Ninja Gaiden, Batman, etc), you need to practice it. Once you do that it's not that bad.
No doubt... I can't come close to beating those two, so I hope it's not as hard, haha... As I said... I feel as though I'm doing pretty good on Shatterhand, though. Especially considering only playing it over the weekend for the first time.
Also... I'm playing on a HDTV, so there's a lag It's miniscule enough for it to be tolerable for SNES, and pretty decent on NES. SMB3 almost feels right. It's WAY better than my other HDTV, so I consider it a pretty small difference. Also, not ever having played Shatterhand helped because I wasn't so thrown off by the timing difference. That being said, I'm pretty picky about the lag and find it SUPER annoying when it happens, so I was pleasantly surprised with this TV.
It will probably feel even that much tighter on my boxy Toshiba.

Absoultely! Another one my gut is telling me to check out is Zen: Intergalactic Ninja.
I dont even like these types of games, and I always liked shatterhand.
Nice... Pretty good indication it's a sweet game. Do you like any more notable/dank platformers/beat 'em ups? SMB, Ninja Gaiden, Batman?

Oh dang... yeah, that one, too. Haha, and yet another one is on the list.
Played it again last night. Felt more comfortable and quite a bit easier. Only played a couple levels, though. Still have to get into the right mind frame to take on that last level.
Still a super fun game. I got mine from Funcoland around 2000. Yikes at the price it's going for now though. I mean, there's obviously much more expensive games out there but I don't know if I'd pay $60 for this now.

Only Mario game I've beat is SMW on snes. I never owned SMB when I had a nes, and never got into platformers. I've played a bit of batman and NG, but not enough to really say on them. Also wasn't too keen on Contra games. I liked metal slug back before it was popular, due in part cause I played cyber-lip so much in arcades, but I stopped playing it when it got well known in the 2000s.
It starts off fairly easy but really ramps up during the burning city stage and boss. The final zone is a gauntlet no question, puts all your platforming skills to the test and throws a bunch of bosses at you with no checkpoints. There is a checkpoint 75% of the way thru the level but you really have to work for it. After a dozen or so tries I had almost had enough, I left my system on overnight and cleared it on the second try. Keep at it and if it is giving you grief, walk away and return fresh.

Even though I'm pretty sure it's alphas and betas (a's & b's) the manual for some reason does replace all the a's with L's. It's baffling.
