I finally jumped into the repro cartridge pool with the help of OCDReproductions :)

Well folks, I've been aiming to do this for at least a few years now but since OCDReproductions was doing a couple of specials (ten SNES games for $300 and 10% all summer) I thought now would be a good time to finally take the plunge...what do you guys think of what I picked out?    I'm a big Peanuts fan and I'm as pleased as punch that someone finally had the heart to do a English Snoopy's Concert repro...check it out on YouTube it looks just like it would in the Sunday comics!  Here's what I picked out:

GEN:

MegaMan Wily Wars (I actually got this one on Ebay)

NES:

Final Fantasy 2

Final Fantasy 3

SNES:

BS Zelda

Dragon Quest 1&2

Dragon Quest 3

Dragon Quest 5

Dragon Quest 6

Final Fantasy 5

MegaMan and Bass

Secret of Mana 2

Snoopy's Concert

Tales of Phantasia

Let me tell ya, the Super Nintendo is already pretty super but now it and my lineup will now be even more super than ever possible

  • Damn, I'd love to have some repros. Especially the english translated super famicom clock tower and those games you listed.
  • It was mainly the major sales he was doing and that he had Snoopy's Concert that I finally took the plunge; good grief! ^^
  • Congrats on the score man.
  • Thanks   I got my wonderful wife to thank for helping me get these

Nice.   I hope you have fun with them. I've always wanted to try the SNES dragon quest games.

  • Very nice collection of some great titles....

Kody is a good guy and does awesome work!
  • So what you're saying is:

  • You'll be busy for a while. Once you play DQ 1-2 and DQ 3,you'll have a tough time playing the nes versions. The Snes/sfc versions are just so awesome. Plus DQ 3 has extras!

Also Mega Man and Bass (to me) is the most difficult classic Mega Man game out there. You'll have your hands full there.

Wily Wars is pretty cool. It's neat to see Sega's take on Mega Man. I actually need to finish everything in that game.

DQ 5 is an amazing game! I finished it a few months ago and enjoyed it immensely. The story is just fantastic.

DQ 6 to me is the worst DQ game I've ever played in the main series. It's not a terrible game, but the characters are pretty meh and there's not much story behind them so you don't connect with them at all. The stiry isn't that great either. Also the game often doesn't give you good clues on where to go next or what to do. It's like the DQ brain trust went on vacation and instead it was made by interns. Haha.

I can't speak about the other games. You'll definitely be enjoying these for a while.
  • I did finish the GBA version of MegaMan & Bass several years ago (yes all 100 CDs) but boy is that one CD in particular hard (the one where Rush has to dig it up before these drill enemies knock him out and/or destroy the floor). And don't be so sure about "having a tough time playing the NES versions"...even as far back as Mario All-Stars vs NES versions I kinda like to have the best of both worlds! And how are the translations in these games?
  • Why wouldn't you just buy a flash cart? You could have all of those games and every other game in the library NES and SNES library for less than you paid.
  • That doesn't count though. Those aren't real.  That would be like asking why would you buy a vintage baseball card set when you can just download pictures of the cards

I would probably go that route for the hacks and "master/second quest" stuff...there's just way too many of them and how do you even know which ones are the best?
  • Lol. Your "repros" are just as fake as a flash cart, except the flash cart saves you shit loads of money. What is the deference between using a flash cart for hacks compared to translated ROMs, neither are "real" games.
  • I guess because it has more of the look and feel? *shrugs* The only way they could get any more "real" is if it were possible take the actual Super Famicom cartridge and somehow cram a translation patch for it.

I mean people do get repos for a reason right? Sort of like a "what if" the game got a proper US cartridge release.

or learn to speak Japanese  I think it is possible to patch roms on original carts but have no idea how it works or if it is even a thing. Edit: also if you play on a retron 5 you can apply patches
  • As far as the translations go,the patch I used for DQ 5 was good. The one for 6 seems incomplete. It could have been better as some of the dialogue from the villagers after you revisited towns were garbled. Not sure what patches he used for each game.

I played the original Japanese versions of DQ 1-2 and 3 on a "modified" snes and beat 1 and 3. I need to play 2. I also beat the original version of Mega Man and Bass (Rockman & Forte) with both Mega Man and Bass. Way easier to use Bass.

For Mega Man and Bass, the sfc/snes one is way better. The thing about the gba one is the sprites weren't scaled down to better accommodate the gba,so everything is simply too big to see much of what's going on. And yeah, that CD is a pain. I just got it the other day.

I've been trying to beat all the robot masters using just the buster but the game doesn't make it easy on you at all. Still trying to pull it off with Magic Man and Dynamo Man....stupid energy replenishing abilities!

Anyway,I think you'll enjoy this version better since it is not space constrainted. The soundtrack also sounds much better on the snes.
  • Yeah I don't particularly like any of that cramped screen/shurnken characters deal either

And before anyone asks, yes I do intend to get the Mario Lost Levels and StarFox 2 ones but those will have to wait till next time.

I'll say I'll be busy!  Here's what's on deck for my RPG lineup...and that's just covering the "big three" of NES/SNES/GEN!!

NES: Dragon Warrior 4, Final Fantasy 3, Final Fantasy 2 (the real ones, not FF4 and FF6 with the funny names on the labels though I do have those too!)

    GEN: Phantasy Star 2, 3, 4

SNES: Dragon Quest 5, Dragon Quest 6, Tales of Phantasia (I know there's a GBA version but I've heard it's a lousy port), Secret of Mana, Secret of Mana 2 (that did not make it to the US), BS Zelda 1+2 (I guess if I get this and the F-Zero one a little it'll be just like having the Sega Channel, eh SatelliteView from Japan, and there's no stupid time limit either   )

What can I say?  I make sure to get my money's worth

  • What was the turnaround time for OCD's NES games?
  • On his FAQ he said the usual turn around is around a couple weeks or so?
  • I'd absolutely love to have english repros for FF2 and 3 NES.
  • If you got the nickels and dimes saved up go for it!

Thats why you do both!! Repros and flash lol.

Also, regarding buying the super/regular famicom games, you can have someone switch out the eproms for a translated version if you want.  For those games that have a translation but no available CIB version =0)

  • I guess I would consider doing say, all the NES games (or Game Gear games since that's gonna be the only way they can be played on TV) for a GBA cartridge, that's one good way to take NES on the go without having a bulky cartridge sticking out!

I dunno, I might consider doing those Everdrive deals someday...they do seem kinda neat but I still gotta collect the games too. The real ones.
  • Yeah there''s way more worth while translated RPGs than quality ROM hacks available.

Did that comport with your experience?

  • This is my first order though. I did get an email saying they were ready to ship out though
  • Oh, I see. You haven't gotten them yet.
  • OCD goes great work. I got my Ancient Stone Tablets, Energy Breaker and Mother 2 from him.

Oh man... give it a rest. Saying a flash cart is better then individual repros of unreleased/translated/hack games ... in a thread of a guy who is just sharing his joy of owning said media... is pretty shitty. Also...

  • For repro sellers... I like http://www.shopflashbackgames.com/ as well as Fishy Face (although it looks like Fishy Face is nowhere to be found right now).

Flashback in particular has a plethora of Mario Hacks that no one else sells, mainly because they have a guy on hand that can edit the hacks to work on carts when necessary.
