multiplayer SNES beat em ups and sidescrollers

Last time I hung out with my brother in law, we spent hours and hours playing final fight 2. We are going on a trip together in a few weeks. I'm looking for similar snes games to bring along. Have a lot in those categories for nes, but he prefers snes and I aim to please. Picked up rival turf - not bad, but ff2 is way better. Any suggestions in these categories? Doesn't necessarily have to be beat em up, but two player is a must.

  • Final Fight 3

    Sonic Blast Man 1/2

    Peace Keepers

    Ninja Warriors

If you're looking for some with minimalistic RPG elements:

    King of Dragons

    Knights of the Round

    Legend
  • Turtles in time

Edit: and sunset riders. Oh and zombies ate my neighbors, not a side scroller but still a great two player game
  • Knights of the Round is one of the best multiplayer beatemups on SNES

I'm embarassed that I left this one off the list

    Slice and dice!

    you should be
  • I love Battletoads Double Dragon. Plus you can always make it into a vs game if you feel like it

Super fun tip: warp ahead to the Asteroids level and turn it into a deathmatch. Tons of fun

These all look incredible after viewing gameplay. Looks like sonic blast man 1, ninja warriors, and legend are all one player only though. Am I wrong about any of those? Either way, awesome suggestions. I'm going to pick up as many as I can even if I can only play them myself. Just trying to prioritize short term. Thanks again.

A sidenote, picked up turtles in time a few months back and it is also amazing. Not sure why I too, had not thought of that one.

Finally, shit this stuff is pricey. Makes nes games seem cheap. Weird that beat em ups seem like a lot of the pricier titles for snes, but are generally amongst the cheaper titles for nes. Still, keep the suggestions coming without factoring price in.

I have this but have always played the nes version. Appear to be the same and I prefer nes controllers. How do you warp?

  • I don't know why, but I kinda like Legend.
  • Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka

If you have a flash cart there is an English translation for it.
  • Turtles in time and shmup would be wild guns.
  • Super Smash TV or Rock n Roll Racing. Not beat em ups, but fun with multiplayer games
  • Secret of Mana is always fun, not exactly a beat 'em up, but then again not a lot of thought is required when two players jump onto the same screen. Twisted Tales of Spike McFang is another one, though you have to use a code for that I hear.
  • Me and my friend had a great time with goof troop. And wild guns.
  • Great suggestions so far! King of Dragons is a personal fav! 1 great 1 i havnt seen mentioned yet is Captain Commando! I also like Combatribes though sometime it gets hated on. Doomtroopers is a fun little 2 player Side scrolling run n gun game. Super Double Dragon & Battletoads in Battlemaniacs are a must! Also Firepower 2000 is a fun little shmup you can play 2 player and nothing probably gets more 2 player love on snes in my place than Contra III & Super Smash TV.
  • " Battletoads in Battlemaniacs "

This looks like a game that requires a lot of skill and practice to be fun for two players beyond the first level. I haven't played it, but it looks to be even more difficult than NES Battletoads despite being much shorter.

Its pretty much smooth sailing up to level 4, the speeder bike stage. Trying to beat alone is hard, trying to beat 2 player is damn near impossible. I've only done that 1 time with my cousin and we havnt been able to do it again since.

The Battlemaniacs versions of the snake pit, turbo tunnel and clinger winger make the original Battletoads stages seem mild, based on the playthroughs I've seen. There also doesn't seem to be as much "battling" in the game. The original Battletoads has some vehicle stages, but there's also a fair amount of enemies and fighting.

I agree, the turbo tunnel and snake pit are harder for sure. I've actually never passed the snake level cuz ive only made it there a couple times cuz the damn speeder bike level is so hard. I dig the challenge tho which always keeps me coming back!   Maybe PhearedPhool will chime in, i know he's trying to beat Battlemaniacs right now. We were trying to beat the speeder bike stage together a couple weeks ago and he pretty much had the pattern down, i was a little rusty tho.
  • Captain America and the Avengers. Decent port of the arcade title.
  • I just beat Battlemaniacs fresh from mastering the original

Ragnarok's Cavern - much harder in Battlemaniacs, but not too bad with practice

Wookie Pit - harder in Battlemaniacs, but farming 1UPs seems slightly easier

Turbo Tunnel - much harder in Battlemaniacs, likes to subvert your expectations with new twists

    Arctic Cavern - MIA

    Surf City - MIA

Karnath's Lair - MUCH harder in Battlemaniacs, mostly because the sprites are so damn big

    Volkmire's - MIA

    Intruder Excluder - MIA

    Terra Tubes - MIA

Clinger Winger - a bit harder in Battlemaniacs because of the addition of jumps and ducks, and it likes to try and fake you out, but no boss at the end

Rat Race - seemed much easier in Battlemaniacs. And the glitch I ran into helped me as opposed to ruining my game.

    The Revolution - MIA

Dark Queen - I thought Battlemaniacs' was much tougher
  • I recommend Legend of the Mystical Ninja. It meets most of your requirements and is not super expensive.
  • Ooohhh   Pocky & Rocky is another good 1! Those games are alot of fun 2 player.

The main thing that makes Battlemaniacs easier than the original is because it is much shorter IMO, so there is a lot less you need to memorize.  The individual levels themselves are generally harder, but there are fewer of them and the hardest levels in the original game (stage 7?, sewer, final level) are all missing.  At least that's my take on it.

  • Lol does Secret of Mana count? Also, you want some other interesting 2 players experiences try the Lost Vikings games.
