Chrono Trigger: SNES, PS1, or DS?

So I've never actually played Chrono Trigger before but it's one of those games I have heard about since the 90s. I want to finally play through the game, but the problem of course is that the SNES version is quite expensive and I don't currently own it.

However, I do have the game on DS and PS1 as part of the CT/FF set. What is the best way to play the game? I know that the PS1 version isn't the greatest port, but it also seems to add some cool things like cutscenes. The DS version adds some new areas, but I'm a bit turned off by it being on a handheld. Is it worth waiting until I get a SNES Everdrive? Or are the differences in the ports insignificant enough that I will still get an enjoyable experience?

  • If you have a retron 5 grab the super Famicom cart. Less then 10 loose or less than 30 cib
  • I never had my own SNES copy until this year when I won a copy in NA Auctions. The last time I rented it (it was a regular rent for a while) was probably 1996, and I'd never emulated it since then, never played another version. Something about waiting 20 years to taste the game again, I think it made it so much more satisfying to do it on the SNES again. Maybe I'm just being ridiculous, but I'm really glad I finally landed a copy and didn't just take the "cheap way out" on PS1.
  • The DS one is perfectly fine as far as I remember. It's got the content from the PS1 release, and some new stuff, including a final, final boss (spoiler: its just a re-skin)

The PS1 version is virtually unplayable thanks to load times. Stay far, far away
  • Great question. Another one of those games I have on my loooong bucket list I want to play. I own both the SNES & PS1 versions along with the Strategy Guides and have only read great things about this game. Always wondererd if there was a difference. Being more of a purist I would want to play the SNES version.
  • I actually don't mind the PS1 version. I was able to complete it, and I'd rather pay for that than I would the US SNES price.
  • I would go OG SNES if you've never played it. The extra content is nice but why not play it how it was originally intended 1st then maybe play the DS version later. Playing the ps1 or ds version 1st would be like watching a directors cut of a movie you've never seen. I think the extra content would be better appreciated knowing how the game was.

With the PS1 version...not too hard to imagine what the original was like, just imagine there were no FMV's. lol

  • SNES or DS are good options. No to PS1. It's the first version I played because it was cheap (~$1.20 PS store) and I regret it now that I'm at the final boss and have finished all the sidequests. Despite others being optimistic about the load times, the fact is it adds up. It certainly shortens the amount of time I spend playing the game each session.
  • Never played SNES or ps1, but I vote DS. From what I understand, it has the most content. It also flows well with no load problems, and its portable.
  • SNES. PS1 version is a turd and playing on a handheld is awful.
  • If you didn't play the original (don't have the nostalgia factor) I highly recommend the DS version. I just did research on this exact question. The DS version has the best content and technical aspects (no load times etc.). I've recently started my very first playthrough of Chrono Trigger and chose the DS version, even though I have access to the other versions.
  • Well if you already have the PS1 or DS versions don't play the DS version.....play the PS1 version without a DOUBT.

This game has an amazing soundtrack and would be MUCH better suited on the PS1 with the far far FAR superior audio....the DS version does not do justice to it at "all".

Some people never take that into account unfortunately....however if you plan on getting an everdrive that is the most complete experience you will get.
  • All of them are awesome. Really no wrong answer.

For the PS1 load times, you can play on a ps2, speed disk speed up and the load times go away.

Snes is my favorite way to play it though.

wait, on ps2 can you make it faster? Or does that happen on its own?
  • Ps1 version is 10 new, so that one gets my vote.
  • SNES, always SNES. Then you also get the benefit of using the most perfect controller ever designed.

Nope there is a menu in the system menu where you can change the disk speed.

Np dude! You can also turn on smoothing and a few other features i think in the same menu. Its a PS1 on PS2 menu. I forgot how to pull it up but just check google for disk speed adjustment on the ps2.

    Good point Toxie.

  • Another alternative is to buy a digital copy of Chronotrigger either for the Wii/Wii U or PSN.

Wasn't even aware it was offered there, not a bad choice either.....better than PS1/DS easily.

Agreed. That whole compilation just flat out sucks.

And who puts CT in a FF compilation when they could've just put 3j on it? Then again, it's Squaresoft. Making bad decisions since 1997.

The ps1 version's load times are just brutal. I've never played the DS version,so I can't comment on that one.

And on a side note, while it is cool to get all these remakes of great RPGs it equally sucks that they are on handhelds. These games need to be on the main consoles.
  • I don't think I could trust a man who doesn't answer SNES to this question.
  • Android version is pretty darn good too.

Ya, load times on ps1 are pretty annoying. But I've never tried it on the ps2 with the speed up option mentioned.

I think the ds version is ok if you played the game before.

I'm a cheapskate but this is one even I say shell out $90-$100 for the cart.

I think I might end up going this route depending on how long it takes to get the Everdrive. It looks like it's only available on the Wii at the moment so I can't use the Wii U Pro Controller unfortunately (or use my eshop points), but I can use the classic controller which is close enough to the SNES controller.

The PS1 version with the PS2 disc read sounds like the second best option. I think I'm gonna stay away from  the DS version because of it being a handheld and I really just want something I can play on my TV. Sounds like that might be better suited for a second playthrough.

This is a really important aspect. Video game soundtracks are just as important as the gameplay for me. Does the PS1 version have enhanced audio over the SNES version, or just the DS version?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!
  • Emulate on a computer with save states, doesn't get any more convenient than that.

The soundtrack is awesome, but SE dropped the ball on several of the PS1 versions of their SNES games. I only played CT on PS1 a little bit, and gave up due to the load times, so I can't recall the audio. I do recall the PS1 versions of FFIV and VI having absolutely terrible audio, though. The "ka-ching" cash register sound when you buy something in FFIV sounds like aluminum foil in a garbage disposal ran through a distortion pedal.

To answer the OP, go SNES or DS.
