The PS1 version is perfectly fine if you can stand the load times. Load times don't bother me but the SNES version is still the "definitive" way to play it, but it's ridiculously overpriced especially compared to how cheap the other two are.
Well if you already have the PS1 or DS versions don't play the DS version.....play the PS1 version without a DOUBT.
This game has an amazing soundtrack and would be MUCH better suited on the PS1 with the far far FAR superior audio....the DS version does not do justice to it at "all".
Some people never take that into account unfortunately....however if you plan on getting an everdrive that is the most complete experience you will get.
The soundtrack is awesome, but SE dropped the ball on several of the PS1 versions of their SNES games. I only played CT on PS1 a little bit, and gave up due to the load times, so I can't recall the audio. I do recall the PS1 versions of FFIV and VI having absolutely terrible audio, though. The "ka-ching" cash register sound when you buy something in FFIV sounds like aluminum foil in a garbage disposal ran through a distortion pedal.
To answer the OP, go SNES or DS.
I have beat it on every platform it has been available on multiple times, the DS version is the worst one easily.
SNES version is the best IMO, followed by DS, followed finally by PS1. However they are all good.
Most younger folks seem to think the DS is the best version, and perhaps it is, especially if you consider Chrono Cross canon and enjoy Toriyama animated cutscenes. However the sidequests hand out too many rare items that trivialize the regular endgame content, and it causes pacing issues.
For the love of god, don't get the PS1 unless you love load times.
While the DS version is good, they cut out Frog's awesome dialect in that game while the SNES and PS1 kept it. You'll know what I mean when you play through it.
