How many of you liked Pokemon at first...?
I grew up in the late 90s playing Pokemon Blue, Red, and Yellow. The thing I loved most about Pokemon was battling my friends on their front doorsteps with our Gameboy Colors. I had the fastest Jolteon, as a result, the fastest Pokemon so I always got the first strike. But after awhile, it seemed like it just because the same stuff over and over again. I will be honest, I didn't even get in to the games after the Original 151 Pokemon because it was very repetitive. That was also around the time that we started playing N64 more like Smash Bros everyday after school. That took up more of my time than Pokemon did.
So did any of you get bored with it after a while as well?

But through late 1998 and early 2000, jesus. I used to print out episode descriptions for the cartoon. I used to read all of the crazy rumors online about new islands and new Pokemon in the game and try to recreate them. I definitely remember when Marill was known as Pikablu. I had his Japanese Pokemon card way before that wave was introduced in the States. I was the first kid in my elementary school with a Charizard card (will never forget opening it in the corridor of a random mall in Putney, VT and freaking out) We used to stay up all night every weekend having parties playing the card game, trading on Game Boy. I was a Blue user. Stepbrother had Red. Me and my friends used to have parties of like eight of us all in one house up all night drinking Pepsis and marathoning N64 games as 12 year olds trying to be semi-quiet to not wake up my friends parents on the 3rd floor. We'd stack solo cups on whoever fell asleep first and then knock them off with paper towels for entertainment while we trolled the Safari zone for Taurus. We were all very competitive about who would be the first to have a 10,000 score on Mew in Pokemon Snap. Pokemon flat out resurrected the GB Game Genie as well. Suddenly those things were an incredible hot commodity again and couldn't be found anywhere in stores, you just had to have one from back in the day or know a friend who did. We were thrilled to turn our Psyducks into Mews back in 6th grade. I even collected all 151 in Pokemon Pinball. Used to go to card tournaments at the local toy store. Bumped into the owner of the store as an adult at the supermarket years and years later and he was thrilled when I said I used to compete in those. I even used to have a Pokemon Pikachu (Tomagachi knockoff) strapped to my backpack. I remember all the fake merchandise. One of the only times I ever went to Blockbuster in the 90s was to print kiosk stickers, we generally rented from other stores even though we had a membership since '95. I've never played more multiplayer videogames in my life than 1998-2000....it certainly wasn't just Pokemon, we played absolutely everything. Our poor N64s never used to get shut off. The Summer of 1999 was also the last year of my life I ever went to Summer camp, and Pokemon was definitely pandemic that Summer....nobody wanted to do any other activities at all haha. The cards became banned.
The last few years, I've found myself fond of Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Yellow again. I still am playing my same Yellow save from launch day. Still only have like 110 Pokemon. Every few months I'll get a new one here or there. It's kind of cool that I'm still playing the same adventure all these years later. Maybe that's why I never felt the need to go past Yellow, because I still never truly completed it And for Stadium....it's been like 16 years and I've still never even beat the Pika cup. Doesn't help that 90% of the time the N64 Transfer Pak gets bumped and corrupts though.
Funny enough, the first episode of South Park I ever saw in my life was the Chinpokomon episode when it was brand new. That was the week my cable providers area got Comedy Central finally.

i was really into gen 1. i was in about fourth grade when it hit the states so i was prime age. but yeah once the pokemon count jumps up to 300 it lost me. i feel like the pokemon teams could have learned a little from dunbars number.
i put a lot of hours into the old red and blue tho. tons of nostalgia. nights experimenting with missingno and the crazy school yard rumors of the truck with mew under it. i dont think any game has or will ever captivate me in the same way.

man I wish I still had my Pokémon Silver save. Gen 2 save batteries die quicker due to the internal clock I believe. But if I still had it I'd probably be in the same boat as you regarding the transfer pack, plug in a second controller with the transfer Pak and put it somewhere safe. Then use the first controller in peace. I learned this after getting mad Everytime I bumped mine

for anyone interested in replacing the battery on your old games without loosing the old data here is a good video on how to do it.
and idk if this affected the battery life but i know the pokemon yellow batteries were physically smaller than red and blue. not sure if all yellow carts had smaller batteries but i replaced one last week and i put the larger cr2025 battery
You'd think i'd get bored, since it's pretty much the same principle behind every game, but they change it up and add enough new stuff to keep me interested.

that would've been good to know 10 years ago I actually haven't gotten around to changing batteries yet but that'll be useful in the future. Thanks bud!
The only experience I've had with the franchise is the cartoon. It came out when I was in college (yeah....) and I watched it a few times during study breaks but couldn't really get into it because it was just too kiddy for me. Lol.
The closest thing I've come to playing a Pokemon game is Dragon Warrior Monsters which I would assume copies a lot of the game play found in the Pokemon games at the time.
Then I went back home to visit my parents during the weekend and brought it with me, of course.
Mum asked what I was playing and asked to try it. She pretty much played it non-stop all the weekend long, never letting my gameboy go. And that is how she became a huge Pokemon nerd and I lost my colour GB and my Pokemon red.
I kinda disliked the game a bit after that, but alas, the end result was worth it I guess.

Are you fucking serious?......... Where were you 17 years ago when I needed you? lol
And, OP, the reason you lost interest is because gen 1 Pokemon are the BEST Pokemon. Not much else matters past that. I had fun with Gen 3, and some of Gen 4 was cool. But really, the original 151 is where it's at. The only, ONLY, thing I'd change about them is their type issues (make them a little more balanced by adding some type 2's from more recent Gens). Other than that, I have no complaints about them.

hahaha glad I'm being useful
Still hold a place in my heart for the original three games...and Squirtle. He was the best Pokemon ever
It was a fun time in life, and I enjoy reliving those moments. I about sh*t myself when I found Ruby and Sapphire last summer at the thrift store.
Also, how do you expect people to 'CATCH EM ALL' when you jerks keep releasing new Pokemon every 2-3 years?
I played the first game but felt it was too easy and basic. Bunch of the mechanics really bugged me like having to switch characters all the time or going back to a hospital so you could recharge your powers. It made the whole thing feel really slow and shallow. I get you are suppose to switch out pokemon all the time because some are better vs others, but I used the same two pokemon thru the majority of the game and rarely did anything challenge me enough to make me switch up tactics. Just use the most powerful attacks of my best characters and rolled over most of the game.
Also for being an RPG the story was really weak. You walk around and people say nice shoes and start a random battle. LOL wut?
Did some trading and battling but those link cables were sloooooooooow and battles were boring. I guess you really had to build it up to something bigger in your mind, because those early games were dull as dirt.
Since I was 16, there weren't too many people my age playing the game that summer that I knew of.
Never revisited them, though, because they are extremely repetitive and grindy.
I got the battling other people aspect out of my system before those games were ever released, since Digimon did a great set of Tomagachi that could fight each other. Also had a set of "scannerz" that were like Digimon mixed with monster rancher, where you had to scan bar codes to find monsters and items.
Then I got a DS in 2010 and picked up Diamond. It immediately pulled me back in and I've been playing all the games since. The first two gens are still my favorite. Pokemon was such a huge part of the late 90s. Thinking of all the trades, the battles, and the promotions like the little cardboard cards on the backs of Lunchables boxes really brings me back.

Well then at least I feel I didn't miss out after Gen 1, lol
I've been addicted ever since, although I had to hide my enjoyment of the series up until Senior Year in HS because Nintendo in general was looked down upon. I really only ever got burnt out during Gen 5 with the original Black/White due to their lack of improvement from Gen 4, awful starter Pokemon designs, and that I was more interested in starting my NES collection.
I still pick up packs of the TCG on occasion, read the Pokemon Adventures manga (seriously read it, it's everything you'd want from a Video Game adaptation), and I cried manly tears at Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions. It took 10 years, but I caught them all for the first time in Gen 6 thanks to Pokemon Bank/Transfer.
I loved the first two gens of Pokemon, and then took a hiatus in gen III and IV. I've come back to the series at gen V and have been back ever since.
That is pretty much the "exact" thing that happened to me as well man however I did get Pearl and played it bit but wasn't really glued to it like I feel I should have been.
