Any other Nintendo fans who have never played Pokemon?!

So, pretty straightforward topic.  I own plenty of Pokemon games as a collector (GB, N64) but have never played one.  The only reason I can name Pikachu is because of the Hey You Pikachu! game on N64, otherwise I wouldn't know any of their names.

From what I've read the gameplay seems pretty solid (it's a great seller for a reason), I just didn't get into it as a kid and then it seemed too kid-oriented as I got older.  I can't be the only one?

  • I haven't, although I'm planning on getting into it at some point, looking into what game would be a good starting point.
  • I had to look it up on Google today to find out what it was. I've never played a Pokemon game and never known anyone that has.
  • Never touched the stuff. Pretty sure I don't own anything Pokemon either. I watched the cartoon a couple of times.
  • I have never played it. I own lots and my wife plays a lot of them. Dont think ill be starting now ;/
  • Day one adopter here, but haven't played or touched it since. Never got into any of the tangential stuff either, just played Red to death and then was done. I recently started to play Blue for the first time, again, not having played any of the games between then and now, and it is indeed hard to get into. I just don't have the catch 'em all attitude (or attention span?) anymore I guess.
  • Are......are you serious? There are a few questions I want to ask to determine how this is possible, but I don't want to offend.

They must be those weird home schooled kids you would see once in awhile and wonder who they were.
  • I've never played Pokemon and had forgot about it until I saw the new phone app on the news today. I assume it's a generation thing right? I never knew their were cartoons. I just know of it from the games and always figured they were something that appealed to people who grew up with it.

Right, I was in college when they came out in the US, so I never cared.
  • You're not the only one.

I knew about it in high school and my friend played on gameboy on the bus. I had it but I never played it.

I've also never gotten into it or played it for any notable length.
  • Umm... Pokemon Red. This is your homework for the next week.

    Please?
  • Im pretty sure theres like a law or something that requires you to have played Pokemon. So your all under citizens arrest
  • I tried Red way back when, but the mechanics of monster ranching never appealed to me, so I bored of it before getting through the game and never revisited it. Just not my cuppa, I suppose.
  • Never have

There's a million of them for DS and 3DS though so its inevitable. And I'm kind of intrigued by the Koei-styled one
  • First, you don't need to "catch em all" to enjoy the game. If you're looking at it as just another RPG there's still enough there to enjoy. Just catch 6 little dudes for your team, grind em until they're big dudes, and kick ass. The battle system has plenty of meat to it, there are lots of different types of Pokémon (water, electric, dark, bug etc) and for the most part the type advantages are straight forward (water puts out fire, fire burns grass, etc) but you can always look up a chart to see what's good or bad against what. On top of that you have passive abilities, for example this dude can't fall asleep or this dude burns you if you use a physical attack. On top of that you can equip an item, so this one let's you always attack first or this one heals a bit every turn. So figuring out the battle system was lots of fun for me at first. Then once you've nailed that you can play with friends online and competitively battle each other and try to build a better team than them. How many RPGs can you do that in?
  • I've played a little of stadium and snap but I never owned a pokemon game in its day, I new about a lot of the 1st gen due to the cartoon in its day though
  • So, its like Shin Megami Tensei, but bright and cute instead of killing god and taking his throne
  • Never played a single one of the games.

I've heard they're similar yes  haven't played any of the Shin Megami Tensei games yet though
  • Never played or owned one. I was a little too old when it was first released. I do like RPGs so I have probably been missing out all of these years.
  • I never played it, I was a bit too old at the time to care for it.
  • Same here, never played any as a kid or an adult.

Sold all my CIB GB, GBC, GBA, DS CIBs (near completed set) this year; no regrets, no nostalgia attachment and figure I will likely never go back and play them all. Keeping N64 versions since I am going for complete N64 set, but if I wasn't I would sell those as well.

You could say, the Pokemon had to "go"...
  • Never watched or played anything Pokemon related.
  • This should be a poll   Other than smash bros, never played any pokemon games.

Same boat as me, only have them CIB on N64 because I did the full set CIB.  I also went for the GB CIB set (didn't finish, but got close), so I had to pick up Red / Blue / Yellow and that was that.  I've decided to keep those 3 for historical significance but that's about it.

I'd be interested to see the results actually
  • Never played anything at all, never my thing as I was too old when it first came out.  The only thing I ever played that had anything related was I always played as Pikachu in Super Smash Bros because he shot lightning.
  • I've played some Red, and Diamond? I don't know, one of the DS games. Never beat either, or got very far. They're very repetitive.
  • Never once played any Pokemon game, even for a second. No desire to. No problem with those who do. I'm just at that certain age. I can't think of one person I knew that was my age who played those games, so I just never got into it.
