I also have never played a pokemon.  And I flat out brag about the number of RPG's I've played and beat over the years. I was 20 when it came to America, was not too big of a fan of Gameboy due to having one of the first ones with the bad screens, and knew it was a pretty simplestic RPG aimed at younger kids.

    Played Dragon Warrior Monsters though.

how's DWM? I've picked up a copy but haven't tried it yet. To lazy to change the battery
  • As far as I can recall I have also never played a pokemon game. Why is that such a suprise there weren't any on the nintendo or even the super nintendo were there?

Right, I was in college when they came out in the US, so I never cared.

Same for me. I was in college when it hit the scene here and watched the cartoon a handful of times but it was too kiddy for me to get into it.

Figuring that the game was aimed for the same audience as the cartoon,I never bothered to try to play any of them.
  • My younger cousin showed me how to play the card game years ago. Never played the video games.

the card game is fun too. Also the GBC version of the card game is enjoyable

The first Pokemon games came out in 1998 here (1996 in Japan), so the SNES was well into the end-of-life stage.

Unless you count knockoff pirate games.

Yeah, it was actually pretty cool. If I weren't neck deep in finishing my bachelor's at the time, I could see myself getting into it.

  • Everything I know is from working at Toys R Us during the 99-00 craze when we hosted pokemon tournaments. Other than that and my little brothers playing, I never touched it.
  • I have most of them but never have tried them. If they had been console games I might have been more inclined to play. Ive always played pick up and play style stuff on portables over rpgs etc.

    My kids love them though

I agree a full console version would be fantastic. But since it sells their handhelds I don't see that happening. There are the two GameCube ones but they're not as good. Still decent though
  • If you have a 3DS, there's really no good reason not to pick up X/Y and at least give it a shot. You can beat it in under 20 hours, and if you want to put in more time it's very easy to sink a ton of hours in.
  • Not really surprised a lot of people have have never played it.......bunch of dinosaurs hahahah!!

Easily one of my favourite series, I was around 8 years old when it came out so I was absolutely just batshit fucking crazy over Pokemon and are still heavily involved in it.

I honestly cannot believe how successful and popular this franchise has been now on a consistent basis, I remember my Mom going "you will grow out of that in a year I'm not buying that!" and I will still bring it up to her to this day because it is hilarious.

To say Pokemon is one of the biggest things the gaming/cartoon world has ever seen is an understatement, it has had a massive cultural impact.

Oh yeah, I have never played it though.

I remember thinking to myself that it was a fad when it first came out, and here I am almost 20 years later still playing it....playing it even more hardcore than I did as a kid.

Few months ago I was at my parents and brought my 3DS, they couldn't believe I was still playing Pokemon.

  • Other than 1-2 games of Pokemon Snap never played them, none of the main games. I have a couple of the GameCube games in my collection though. Never interested at all because I don't care for turn-based Japanese RPGs (at least not for the non-strategy ones; I love stuff like Fire Emblem). I never got the appeal of the characters either, although my nephews really love the games.
  • I was already driving and chasing girls when Pokemon came out. At the time it seemed marketed to young kids. In conclusion, I and many others my age I would imagine, never got into the Pokémon craze. I have a few games I've collected, but have only verified that they work. Never actually played the game. I have a buddy who's 9 years younger than me, and he loves Pokémon. So I definitely think it helps to be indoctrinated at a young age. But hey, there will be some other game/fad that you won't get/like, and years later, someone will post a thread wondering what the hell's wrong with you
  • Yep. Tried playing the originals when it came out, but felt too kiddie for me.
  • Never played it. But I will admit to watching the cartoon back in the day.
  • Definitely add a poll to this.

I watched the cartoon a few times, so I knew some of the monsters, but I never played the card game or the video games.
  • you not the only one

    I hate pokemon
  • Closest thing to playing pokemon for me was collecting all the Chinpokomon in Sout Park: The Stick of truth
  • Maybe some of you guys should try the pokemon trading card game online. Its a free way to play the card game on your computer. You can download it right from the pokemon site and its a fyn way to play the card game without actually investing in cards
  • I tried playing it, but it felt too old for me when it came out...that Misty was a sex bomb.
  • Tried it briefly, got bored quick, never went back.
  • I feel the same way jone and others who have agreed. The gameplay seems quite good and I would probably enjoy the games, but it was originally a game for children and I was around 17 when it was released. I had been playing competitive MTG for a few years and this simple Pokémon card game that 7 year olds were going crazy about. Children would come into the game stores I would practice at begging their parents to buy pokemon cards. I always saw it as a children's game, although looking at it objectively, I would have probably gotten into the craze if I were a couple years younger and still love it today. For example, I still love Mario, which was a game for children when I was the appropriate age.
  • I played Silver on GBC a decade ago, just for a week or two. My manager at my work back then let me borrow it, and I let him borrow Final Fantasy Adventure. I think I got some of my pokemans up around level 30 or so, evolved a couple of Nidorans, and that's about it. So, I can't actually say that I've never played, but I have never actually put any real time into it.

If you want to hear weird, my oldest daughter(13) has been a big Pokemon fan for years... And never actually plays a Pokemon game. She has t-shirts, action figures, plushies, begged me for Pokemon Art Academy when it came out, etc. She's all about playing Pokemon Go with her mom now. But has never shown the slightest interest in playing an actual Pokemon adventure. I bought her Black for her birthday a couple years ago, and bought her Omega Ruby for Christmas. I think Ruby is still in the wrapper.

It's good if you like statmonger games.  It takes a loooooong time to get some of the higher end monsters bred and maxed stats + skills you want, but there's a pretty good amount of customizing.  Combat is pretty good, 3 monsters in your party, each with 8 skills + fight.

Storyline is almost non-existant.  And the randomly generated dungeons are dull and boring as hell to traverse, so you better like combat in it or there's not going to be much fun. To me, it's one of those games you get more enjoyment out of it by reading a faq ahead of time so you know what to do to have fun in it, rather than experimenting to try to find out how to play.  You're not going to learn any secret plot points or hidden items (There are none), but it will give you a better understanding of the breeding system, and  you don't have to worry about wasting your high end evolution monster on a crappy evolution that ruins your shot at a boss monster.

  • Own a bunch, never played any. I think it is an age thing, I'm too old lol
  • I would like to point out that I was only surprised by bootload's comment that he hadn't heard of it until the other day. I'm not surprised by anyone that hasn't played. It's definitely not for everyone, and I can see how being older would contribute to you never having any interest.
