So basically a trend here. Those who are above a certain age (I'm guessing 30) were probably too old for it at the time it first came out. I definitely remember it being a thing people younger than me were into
I also repeatedly see people asking about it at the local re-seller, and 95% of the time its kids 20 or younger

Yup I always tell everyone I missed Pokemon by a few years. When they came out I was already in college and didn't have a lot of time for games. Had Pokemon come out a couple years sooner I would have been all over that because I love RPGs and my brother and I would have enjoyed it because it has a lot of replay value.
So, pretty straightforward topic. I own plenty of Pokemon games as a collector (GB, N64) but have never played one. The only reason I can name Pikachu is because of the Hey You Pikachu! game on N64, otherwise I wouldn't know any of their names.
From what I've read the gameplay seems pretty solid (it's a great seller for a reason), I just didn't get into it as a kid and then it seemed too kid-oriented as I got older. I can't be the only one?
Never played a single Pokemon game. It wasnt popular when I was starting on the NES and SNES...I was born in 1981 so I was older when it was released on Gameboy and became popular. My brother was born in 1988 and he was all about Pokemon. For some reason I looked at it as a little kids thing when I was moving onto the SNES and never picked it up.
I would definitely say it's an age gap/appeal I only got into pokemon because a friend of mine who is four years younger then me introduced me to it when I was in 8th grade. He had red and blue at the time and let me borrow his red version to try it out and that's all it took to hook me. I soon bought my own copy of red and pokemon stadium for N64 when it came out and I have been playing pokemon ever since.
Everything I know is from working at Toys R Us during the 99-00 craze when we hosted pokemon tournaments. Other than that and my little brothers playing, I never touched it.
I used to go to those tournaments when I was a kid. Even got a $20 dollar gift card for winning one once.
I'm surprised so many people haven't played one. I get that a lot of people were out of the target age range of the initial Poke craze, but there's just been so many titles and it's one of Nintendo's biggest series.
I have never played a Pokemon game. I tried to get into it during the mid-90s, but lost interest quite quickly after watching my 2nd episode. Needless to say, I do own some Pokemon games and will try them out when I have time.
I bought Blue a little after release, beat it, and never played another Pokemon game again. Always thought of it as a cash grab with the whole 'gotta catch 'em all' thing. It never really appealed to me then and I have even less interest in the games today.
I was just a bit too old to catch the fever, I think. I've not played (or even owned) a single Pokemon video game. I have played a hand or two of the Pokemon CCG back in the late 90's and then quickly put it away (I was into other CCGs at the time and wanted to know what this "catch 'em all" thing was about) but that's as close as I've gotten to the IP. Never watched the show, never seen the movies, never collected the swag.
The whole shebang has had me curious to try one of the early games on the GB at some point and see if there's any appeal there at all but...I'm not putting any priority on that. It'll happen (or not) when it happens (or doesn't).
I was I think 17 or 18 when Pokemon hit the US, so I didn't have any interest. I know a lot of people my age who picked up on the series years later, but I never bothered to try a game. Testing carts of Pokemon games I've found in the wild is about the closest I've come to playing them. Actually I guess the closest I've come would be collecting those familiars in Ni No Kuni.
I never owned the games when I was younger as I didn't have a Game Boy, buy my cousins all did and that's the only time I played them. If I had one of my own, I probably would have been more into it.
My parents bought me Pokemon Silver when it came out and I remember vaguely playing it briefly, but sadly that's all. I too own quite a few Pokemon games and have not played any of them aside from that one instance long ago. I have a feeling I would enjoy them, but they are on a long list of games that fit that category for me unfortunately...
I have never played it either, I guess it just doesn't click with me. All of my friends played it when we were in grade school (and still play it now that we're finishing high school). Nothing against it or anything though.
It's especially strange because I don't have the excuse of having been too old when it came out. The earliest games are even older than I am.
Little late to the thread and i didnt read through the whole thing but reading the title you can count me as a nintendo fan who never played pokemon , i was in my late 20s when the games came out and just want into that type of game at that point. i was into playstaion games during that era. My younger brother was big into the pokemon though , we sold the cards at my store when they were the hot new thing and i would alway bring some packs over to my moms house to give to him. he had tons of cards and kept them all those years later he gav an album of cards to my young daughter. and i did enjoy watching the cartoons when they were on in the morning after some wake and bake
There is only one starting point: Red, Blue, Green (if you read Japanese). It's the purest Pokemon experience and won't take you too long to cut through. From there, knock out Gold or Silver and you can make some more significant jumps. The new games are honestly pretty solid too, though I stopped playing the series seriously after the 2nd gen.
I played Pokemon Snap once, which was enough for me. I wasn't a fan. I know it's a spin-off game but I never got into the other games after that experience!
played red , blue, yellow in 6th and 7th grade not long after they came out. Played the card game in 6th grade. I played silver at launch. Played some of black on ds and some of y on 3ds. Not enough to say Ive really played them though.
I stopped playing at the beginning of high school because I thought no one else was and it was dorky if I played it. Find out later, all the other kids in my grade were still playing pokemon through high school.
I never did either but after getting into RPGs a few years back I decided to add all six G1/G2 Pokemon (R/B/Y/G/S/C), and the N64 'Stadiums as well. Haven't gotten around to starting them yet because I've been busy with other games.
I would love to add to that the five GBA Pokemon but there's just too many fakes floating around Ebay Sure some are easy to spot (like the ones with the wrong looking ESRB logo) but I bet with those Pokemon games more than anything some counterfeiters probably tried the hardest to make the fakes look more convincing

I would love to see some age demographic stats on this. I'd be willing to bet that there is a pretty distinct age line on whether you are a Pokemon fan or not.
Based on several responses,it would seem like the Pokemon interest (when initially introduced) cut off would be roughly 17-19.

always figured they were something that appealed to people who grew up with it.
Right, I was in college when they came out in the US, so I never cared.
x2

For shame!!!

I stopped playing games at SNES back in 1995 and got back at gaming again 3 years ago.
So I have a lot, a LOT of games due to play
There are a lot of people in my City who seem to like Pokemon very much.
I did download the app and playing it with the kids.
I might start with the original Pokemon games and work the way up if I like them.
