Any other Nintendo fans who have never played Pokemon?!

  • I secretly played it when my little brother was obsessed with it in the early days. I was around 12-13. Now, I don't care, I'll play it openly. Unfortunately, I've only ever beaten Red. I've put significant time into HeartGold, Black, and Y, but have yet to beat them. Dammit. And ehre I am getting Sun and Moon this Fall! I vow to beat Y before then.

I turn 29 in a few weeks, btw.
  • Never played a single Pokemon game... though I did just start with Pokemon Go. So obviously I have, but not in the vein of all the prior releases that everyone seems to love a bunch.
  • I played it (the original one) for the first time last Winter for a couple of hours, and didn't like it, like all RPGs in that style. It takes waaayyyy too much time and it is extremely repetitive until your characters become a bit stronger and useful. Not fun, and no time for that!

I don't own any of those games, I played it on my Everdrive for Gameboy.

Also I should mention that when it came out, kids my age (must have been around 16) didn't really play it, I remember my friend's little brother and his friends were huge fans and plugged their Gameboys together to exchange pokémons or fight (not sure).
  • I've never played any of the games, never touched the cards, or have owned any of the merchandise. I think all the raving fans drove me away from getting into it but not entirely sure.
  • Pokemon is the pornography of video games. It is not something I need in my life.
  • Reading (some of) this thread was refreshing, as I too have never been into Pokemon either. I'm aware it's a cartoon of sorts, but don't know if there was a TV show, or how it came to be so popular with the kids. I've never played any of the games, so I'm not sure what all the hype was/is about. I, like many others that have chimed in above me, believe it more relates to my generation. I sort of got out of video games when I graduated high school, which was around when the N64 came out, so I guess I just missed the boat... Not that I'm disappointed in that!

    please, elaborate
  • I've never seen the allure, personally. I was a NES and SNES guy at the time, and the fact that Pokemon came out on the handhelds just didn't do it for me. Even once they came to the N64, by then I was older and playing games like Perfect Dark and others made for an older audience and Pokemon seemed to "kiddy" for me...still does, tbh.

    I guess I missed the Poke-boat.

It is an automatic and repeatable process, a substitute for the real thing and an addiction. It gratifies the ego directly and exclusively. It necessarily lacks substance. Engaging in it detracts from the substance of other things. It is a vortex of consumption.

  • Color me surprised. I understand that people have different tastes, but man! (Now to anyone who's around my age, have you ever played this game called Super Mario Bros. for the NES?  )

Is it really an age thing? I'm in my 30's and I've played it and loved it during High School. I was intersted in it, but not in the way most people were. I'm not saying I'm a fan, or I know all the names and stats of each Pokemon, but I did enjoy the hacks, cheats and glitches of the game. haha Not only that, it played on my collector(*cough* hoarder *cough*) mentality by making me want to catch and get more Pokemon. I backed off a bit after gold and silver and came back to it a bit around X and Y.
  • I have never played Pokémon.

I was "too old" for it when it debuted in the 90s, so it was off my radar for many years, even when I returned from being a lapsed gamer.

I have one of the GBA versions from a lot of games I bought and intend to try it out sometime.

How far in the 30s though?  Playing Pokemon in 1996 as a Sr. in highschool is a lot different than playing it as a freshmen or Jr. High student.

  • I never played them. I was graduating high school when they started coming out and just never got into it. Now that I am collecting gameboy though I may give the originals a go

You may be right. I'm 33, but reguardless of that, age groups and what grade you were in didn't really matter at much in my school. It was more being with the "cool kids" or "nerdy kids". That line's blurred now-a-days, but back then, it was very polarizing and age didn't matter.

I would attribute it to age. I was in college when Pokemon came out and I mainly remember thinking "They're still making black and white gameboy games?" The members who were in elementary school during the NES, were probably a bit too old to catch the pokemania.
  • yep count me in this group never owned/own/played a single one
  • I am of "that age." Played games, watched the anime, owned the cards and toys...

I'd recommend giving it a try. It's an okay RPG style game, lots of grinding involved and frustrating at times... Pokemon Colosseum would be a nice place to start.
  • Never played, or owned a single copy. Hell, I dont even know WTF a Pokemon even is, or WTF you do with them. Zero F's given about Pokemon Go! also.

When the games came out it just seemed too "kid-like" for me to want to play it. I was like "theyre still making black and white gameboy games?" I had zero interest in them since I was about 15/16 years old when they came out.

That and anything that has turn based elements in a game make my blood boil. The worst game play ever.

You Millenials can have your stupid Pokemon, meanwhile I am going to go yell at my cloud now!

You must be a real hit at dinner parties.

  • Never played it here either. However, I could see Pokemon Go being really fun and addictive based on what I know about it.

They must be those weird home schooled kids you would see once in awhile and wonder who they were.

It's actually really simple and I am surprised that other people are surprised there are a ton of Nintendo fans who have never played Pokemon.     Many of us who were Nintendo fans when the NES came out in the 80s were already at the age where we were teens or were kids approaching our teen years.  I was into Nintendo big time when the NES came out as well as into the 16 bit era.  However, after the 16-bit era was drawing to a close was also when PC gaming graphics were ramping up big time (remember the Voodoo cards, and Monster 3D cards?), and many of us moved from consoles to PCs due to some games called Doom, Quake, WarCraft II, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Monkey Island, etc.  I didn't get back into consoles until the GameCube had been out for about a year...for about six years, there, I was exclusively PC.  Of course, I had heard of this Pokemon craze, but it definitely seemed marketed to little kids at the time in the late '90s.

Now, I know this path did not take place for everyone, but I can gurantee you, many a Nintendo/console player of a certain age went to PC gaming after Doom hit the scene.  I believe Pat the NES Punk talked about this on his podcast...that this was his natural progression as well.  So, I think many old school Nintendo players may have never played Pokemon due to their age, moving onto PC gaminng, sticking with other types of games that were marketed towards their age bracket (the Mortal Kombats and Resident Evils of the world), and viewed the Pokemon craze as something that was not meant for them since they had passed into adolesence or, for some of us, early adulthood.  Just my take on it...but really, neither of you should be surprised that many Nintendo fans have never played Pokemon!  In fact, for those frequenting this site, I would assume many us NintendoAge users never played Pokemon due to our age!  (I could be totally wrong, however)

  • I was speaking of someone who said they'd never heard of it! Not surprised if someone hasn't played!

D'oh!  Got it!  I see now, right above your first remark, someone says they had to "look it up."  My mistake...since there was no qoute, I assumed you were talking to the topic creator!

  • Not a Pokemon fan here at all but did try one of the original games out back when I was discovering emulators in like 1999. I remember the game was sort of fun but just was already to old for Pokemon.

So, pretty straightforward topic.  I own plenty of Pokemon games as a collector (GB, N64) but have never played one.  The only reason I can name Pikachu is because of the Hey You Pikachu! game on N64, otherwise I wouldn't know any of their names.

From what I've read the gameplay seems pretty solid (it's a great seller for a reason), I just didn't get into it as a kid and then it seemed too kid-oriented as I got older.  I can't be the only one?

I've never played or owned one as it held zero interest for me, but my daughter is into it with her after school friends and....   Well long story short we downloaded Pokemon go and caught one after dinner
