I'm on lunch break and only have a few minutes, but I wanted to jump in on the discussion. I feel I'm in somewhat of a unique position as I travel fairly often to several markets throughout the year and each time I'm there I always hit up the majority of game stores, thrift stores, and flea markets in the area. The cities include; Seattle, Portland, Chicago, L.A., Denver and Cincinnati (where I live). I've been actively collecting for over a decade and feel I could contribute to the discussion (at least anecdotally) based on my widespread "hunting territory".
I'll post some of my thoughts on individual games later tonight, but I wanted to say that I'm excited to see the database getting updated!

welcome to the discussion. Look forward to hearing your contributions. We need more people who hunt alot over the years to chime in here so we can get a good clear concensus.
I don't know how accurate or useful it would be, but is it in the realm of possibility for whoever runs the collection database to compile the number owned of each game?
If it would be of any use, I could setup a stats page that could display the number of ebay sales for any game given a date range. Just let me know and I could throw it together in a few hours.
This would be a good idea, add it to our NES discussion!
Went ahead and added the tool for getting the number of ebay sales to the website. I know most in this thread are basing there values on what they have seen with their own two eyes, but maybe someone can find some use for it :-). Anyways, here it is

It is interesting. For example, see below for a list of the games with proposed 8's. I created two columns - one for sales from 01/01/2016 to current, and the next for sales from 01/01/2015 to current. Obviously this isn't a be-all, end-all indicator, and I think some of these games are 'lured' to ebay because of high prices and/or popularity, but it is definitely reflective of...something.
Yeah, that's true. I also wonder about false positives. For example, the real Sink or Swim (S.O.S), is significantly harder to find than SOS. Yet they often get mixed up. In fact, that is one I wanted to mention because I rarely ever see it in person or online.

I've found one that has even lower numbers than Superbike, but I think it's more to do with nobody caring. Although in this case there are a bunch available on ebay for next to nothing right now.
Yeah, to really be of any use we also need to see the number of active listings. If a game has only sold 10 copies, but has 70 active listings it probably is quite a bit different than one that's sold 10 copies and only has one available. Pretty good way of judging relative demand for a game as well.
As many have mentioned before, eBay is not the best judge of rarity. If you go by the numbers John Madden Football would be as rare as Hagane. This obviously isnt the case. Comparing the list of R8's as Sadikyo did is more how I envisioned the tool to be used. Comparing Hagane to Wild Guns would be a much better comparison and could prove to be helpful in my opinion.
Yes, but when the game has single digit sales for the entire data range you can bet it is rare even though it is also undesirable. So far I've found 2 of them, both games nobody cares about.
There are more than just 2, haha. Although some of them I do wonder if it is actually rare or just SO terrible that no one wants it but if prices went up they'd be all over ebay haha
International Tennis Tour is a good example of one that's probably not exceedingly rare, just unwanted. Only 9 sold since 01/01/15, but well over 20 active listings.
Pushover is definitely too high, I'd say a 6 at best, I seem to run into it fairly often. Of course it's also one of those games that probably sits on shelves longer than others, so hard to say. Shien's Revenge is an 8 imo, I've never seen it in the wild and it rarely has many listings.

I completely forgot that I had already written script for getting the current number of active listings on ebay. I had planned on using it for something (can't remember what) but the plan fell through. Since it was already written I went ahead and added the functionality to the counter tool on the site.
Dream TV is one of those that isn't terribly common but it isn't a very good game (looks like it belongs on NES or Genesis graphic-wise). I've never seen it in person, but I'm not surprised it hasn't gone anywhere value-wise.
Big Sky Trooper has a TON of sealed copies out there, same as Magic Boy (which is also uncommon).
Those two were apparently two of the rarest SNES titles until someone found tons of the sealed copies of both in the early '00s. I would say the chances of finding Magic Boy in the wild is pretty slim, although the sealed copies keep in from being a true rarity.

Woah, that's awesome! I've been trying to do it manually periodically for a while now, this will make my (and hopefully other's) life so much easier. Thank you!
I've seen dream TV a few times in the wild over the years. There's been one at a local game shop for at least a year. Priced too high, but may have to snag it eventually as I get closer to completion and it becomes harder to find.
Dream tv looks like a better game than others ive seen from youtube video gameplay wise. Control wise looks a little wonky. Graphically sub par. But doesnt look horrible. Ive played worse platformers for sure. It was published by triffix which only published 1 other game , space football. Which ive only seen once
Xardion, another game ive also never seen, looks pretty good.
Recently bought combatribes, pretty hard to find. I think i may have seen it once. Its awesome if you like beatem ups. Technos publishes good beat em ups. Just add this on to the list. 2 player game also
I've beat Xardion the last two years for my thread, I like it
Dream TV I could not beat the first level boss. I still have no idea how you're supposed to control both players and not die. There's definitely worse games though

Cool tool, though I wonder if we'll be able to ascertain much from it at this point without more tweaks or feedback
Sports games... not a hot ticket
edit: someone just bought one of the two. Fess up whoever it was

I've only seen one locally that I remember. That was a couple of years ago too. Same with Big Sky Trooper.
This has really gotten interesting!
