My friend gave me a bunch of games from his childhood. Along the goodies came a Sega Master System and about 7 games. NO experience with this system whatsoever, but I am sure I am in for a treat.
Space Harrier is one of my very favorites for sure. I think I like it better than the arcade version, actually. The slower pace makes it less "twitchy" and Harrier stays in place after he moves rather than constantly drift back toward center-screen, which always annoyed me in the arcade.
Castle of Illusion and Land of Illusion, totally different from the Genesis Mickey Mouse games and both absolutely gorgeous. Jungle Book, Asterix, Asterix The Secret Missions, Lucky Dime Caper, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic 1 + 2, theres actually a ton of good and (except for the GG conversions) unique platformers for the system. Also I second Wonder Boy III, great game!
I'm fond of the two Smurfs platformers on the system.
Air Rescue has a serious flaw with the controls that kills the last level, but up to that point I was enjoying it, albeit with gritted teeth. It's a bit like Cobra Command on NES.
Rambo II/Ashura/Secret Command is an Ikari Warriors clone done right -- much better than the NES port of IW.
The Sega Master System is a great system to collect for. Most titles can be found CIB just like the Genesis. PAL games are the best IMO .. Some of my faves include:
That being said... I used to play Comix Zone at my friends place. That was cool.
Master System, not Mega Drive/Genesis, sir.
But we love ya anyway...
great game nonetheless
Haha, you got me there guys.
That's just me showing my ignorance when it comes to anything Sega.
My first thought was "Gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a shit???" Haha... Also, I don't think I've ever even played Master System. I think I played the Wonder Boy Arcade, does that count?
In fact... I thought it was Adventure Island for the longest time until recently I found out they didn't make an AI cabinet, but a Wonder Boy cabinet. I was like 10 when I played it... The place was called "Watch It Video"... I've got a Ninja Gaiden cart from there, haha.

If I'm not mistaken Adventure Island and Wonder Boy are either the same game or one is a ripoff of the other. someone can correct me on that. but its fair to make that mistake I had a Master System but sold it because it was taking up space. Theres only a couple games I care about anyway so Ill probably just get the Power Base converter and play master system games on genesis.

As I understand it Adventure Island is a port of Wonder Boy... Wonder Boy was out first on Arcade, then SMS?
Just having NES growing up I just assumed the game I played in the rental store was Adventure Island. I've come to learn so mnay years later that it was most likeyl "Wonder Boy", haha.
I played Adventure Island on NES so much that'sjust how I remembered it, haha.

You are correct. Wonder Boy was originally developed by Westone and published by Sega. However, while Westone retained the rights to the game, Sega had the rights to the characters and names. So, when Westone went to Hudson Soft to have the game published on the Famicom and MSX, they kept the core game mechanics but had to make slight alterations to the characters to avoid infringement. The result as we now know it became Adventure Island.

And to make it more confusing, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair has the Wonderboy name dropped. And the other wonder boy III game (Cause it's a confusing series), Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap was released as Dragon's Curse. Wonder Boy: Monster Land was released as Bikkuriman World. And the last one I can think of, The Dynastic Hero was really Wonder Boy in Monster World.
The company who did this (Westone as you mentioned) also made a game for Sega called Riot City, which got the same treatment as wonderboy, with Hudson being allowed to port it, without the main characters in place. It became Riot Zone.

Aztec Adventure is ok, nothing great
Dragon Crystal I need to play more
Golden Axe Warrior I need to play more too. But the first few times I played, it didn't seem too bad, but it does seem a bit overrated.
Golvellius is interesting, more people need to give it a try. Would it help if I mentioned it was developed by Compile?
Kenseiden is a hidden gem many people know of. So not that hidden
Master of Darknessvania Another well known hidden gem.
Montezuma's Revenge, an updated port of the classic

I will agree with that sentiment.
It is a fun game, and an interesting historical piece to compare with Legend of Zelda.
But some of the differences in implementation really do make for a worse experience overall.
(though I think it is a better "Zelda-like" implementation than Neutopia)
I always thought the Master System was pretty cool, sad I got rid of mine years ago (I could never find any games for it, sadly).
Air Rescue has a serious flaw with the controls that kills the last level, but up to that point I was enjoying it, albeit with gritted teeth. It's a bit like Cobra Command on NES.
