I don't mind them.....until the encounter rate is like every other step, then guts smash!
  • Any good NES game with stupid password systems
  • Overly lengthy passwords and unskippable cutscenes spring to mind.

Also, the driving stages in Bayou Billy. Really, they're terrible and unfair, the game is tough enough as it is. I admire the ambition of it, but the execution was wretched.
  • +1 on rubber band AI. Love NBA Jam/NFL Blitz, hate all the artificially close games.

Also thought of another one: Cryptic puzzles with no in-game clues to their solutions. Ex: The tornado summon from Castlevania 2, the maze screens in Metal Gear.

I agree with this 110%. Nothing throws off the flow of a good game of Sonic like falling into deep water. What a pain.

You know what? MOST water levels just flat out suck.
  • "Xenoblade Chronicles X" not allowing you to drop Affinity Missions, when many of the are completely obscure.
  • I love mmorpgs but I really hate it when the developers dumb it down for the masses. One of the granddadies of them all is the korean mmo Ragnarok Online it is hard as balls, 0.01% drop rates, nothing is handed to you on a plate and you litterily have to search via the web or in every nook and cranny of the game talking to npcs etc to progress. i basically played this game for months on end and barely made it to max level.

world of warcraft for example was perfect, it promoted exploration (yesterday i spent 2 hours walking around on a vanilla server trying to get an expert fish and cooking skill book at the far reaches of the world), the other day I had to go to the main capital armorer to by able to equip staves and daggers on my priest. it is the little things like that which makes the games great and gives you a sense of achievement when you battle your way up to pre raiding best in slot gear that can take you months. pretty much all of this is handed to you on a plate in the later itterations and it is now possible to get to level cap with relatively good gear in 5-6 hours of prepared correctly.

after level 10 which takes like 7 minutes you dont even need to venture out of the capital until level 90......

Any NES game with long passwords.

RPGs with unknown "points of no-return" for example - I am playing Lunar SSC and I am now trapped in the last area and don't have enough items to finish the game (someone please tell me I am wrong about this).

There is either a way out or a way to buy items AFAIK, but I already forgot about this :/

Ghaleon takes a ton of time to beat though, so you'll pretty much need a lot of star/silver lights.  There also is a bit of luck involved in this fight, as Nall saved my ass more than once by reviving Alex and Jessica.

Really annoying when that happens, especially when you have to heal your party after nearly every fight, like Dragon Warrior II or Phantasy Star II.

Actually, though, when it comes to encounters, Chrono Trigger pisses me off the most. You can see most enemies before you have to fight them, but forget about avoiding anyone (unless you're an AGDQ wiz with the button input skills).

  • -Passwords, I have no patience for them. Nothing kills my excitement for pressing the power button like not being able to play for five minutes while I tediously type out a password with one hand (the other hand holding a piece of paper back in the day, or my phone today, which shuts off multiple times in the course of entering in the correct characters).

-Voices. I really want to play Suikoden Tekaris and Sands of Destruction, but those voices are killer. I liked when games were silent. Probably why I haven't ever really played anything past the PS1 with consoles.

Uuugghhh I only have like 3 silver lights..... hahahah

  • "You cannot accept this quest as you already have too many."

Treasure chests that won't open unless you drop or destroy an item.

Items that break and need repaired.

    Hunger meter.
  • No save point before a really hard area and/or boss., then dying and having to go through an entire area before even reaching the hellish part.

Try out the Gold Box games for one of the better examples of a game system that is heavy on pre-defined battles (there are still random encounters, but they play less of a role than the story-driven battles)

It makes a big difference to know that you aren't just getting arbitrarily beaten up by the RNG, rather than playing through well defined and balanced combat scenarios.

Yeah I can't lie...random battles can be a massive pain in the ass especially in a scenerio like in DW-II but on the other hand I do love overcoming a challenge!

  • The fact that Lolo 3 had to use a 16 character password and add in all kinds of random shit beyond basic letters really pisses me off.

I also hate the monsters in rpgs who spam the crap out of their special attacks or skills, like the mudmen/puppetmen in DW 2 who constantly do the strange jig to steal mp. And of course there's no way to defend it.

The enemies who use dance or instant death spells are ultra annoying as well, especially when you come across a party of those type of monsters. T_T

Or monsters that permanently remove a party member from the battle entirely......ugh.

  • Freaking "escort" missions... Nothin worse than defending a helpless bot with the worst AI imaginable. And most times it seems like the fool you're protecting is actively trying to get killed.

I thought you would say levels with ice/snow mechanics hahahah!!

  • How about RPG that present to you tons of spells for status effects, but then make every boss immune to basically all of them?

Ugh, don't even get me started on SMB3!

    Bosses always be immune man!

Except in FF-VII where you can use an x-potion or phoenix down on that one boss in Cosmo Canyon.

But if you really want to poison that mook, you totally can

  • Also not a fan of the game mechanic where your character gets flung back quite a bit after coming in contact with an enemy.

A little is fine, but some games take it to the extreme. I got hit by a bird/bat,not a bazooka.
  • Strategy games with AI's that are dumber than a box of rocks. Which is most of them. (One notable exception is Nectaris - the AI is only occasionally dumber than a box of rocks - most of the time it is pretty merciless though.)

Games where the bosses have no health meters - especially annoying if you have to use special attacks to do them in - figuring out what that special attack is can be really problematic.

    Some particulars:

The battle system in Vandal Hearts II - made what would have been a pretty amazing game otherwise much weaker.

Addams Family Values - Pretty good game seriously flawed by an almost unusable password system - it had pseudo gothic lettering where most of the letters looked similar to other ones - so the entry of invalid passwords was unavoidable.

Echo Night (a fairly passive puzzle/mild horror game) that ended with a jarring race at the end that had nothing to do with the rest of the game in terms of play style.
