Best Action RPG's
My experiences with RPG's have been purposefully limited to turn based old school SNES style. So that being said the only action rpg games Ive played are Fable and I think all 3 are great. I have Oblivion & Skyrim but haven't played those yet. Only recently have I began playing Final Fantasy 12 and with the style, story and pace it SHOULD be an action rpg but simply isn't. Im looking for games that don't take themselves too seriously, just like Fable. The more I google it the more I see the same games pop up and each one are overly gruesome & too much nudity (nekkid video game people, seriously?!) So what would y'all recommend as fun but deep action rpg's?

Crystalis
Willow
Zelda 2
Faxanadu
All four of those have a lot to offer.
NES:
Crystalis
Willow
Zelda 2

Yeah Zelda 2,Willow & Faxanadu are in my HallOf Fame. Haven't given Crystalis a shot yet but will
Has games on most systems thru the ages. If you have a psp you are in special luck. And if you emulate, theres translated parts iv and v which are both good.
Legend of Grimrock (killer update to the concept of what Eye of the Beholder tried to do)
Diablo / Torchlight
Fallout 3
if you get it on sale (and I mean REALLY on sale) Evoland 2 was fun to play through, as well, though by no means a "best of the best".
NES:
Crystalis
Willow
Zelda 2
Faxanadu
All four of those have a lot to offer.
This!
... all of the Zeldas (personal favorites are I and IV), ..., Neutopia I and II, ...
*are not RPGs* They are "action-adventure" games

I'd tend to agree but the front of the box on Neutopia and Neutopia II both say "Role-Playing" in big bold letters. Just semantics...

You know I'm just giving you a hard time. (while reenforcing the case for THE TRUTH )
And yeah, they are fuzzy genre categories (the division between action-RPG and action-Adventure).
Have to draw the line somewhere, though
Jonas - I've never actually seen the box for Neutopia, but played through them. So my statement was just about they are akin to Zelda, rather than have some of the additional RPG features of stuff like Crystalis/Willow.

Oh I know, don't worry. I just read about someone giving a panel on how all games are "role playing," which has always been true, but I just want to roll my eyes. All games are action too, or puzzles, or challenges, or whatever we want them to be if we look hard enough. Goodbye genres and definitions.

Yes they are Zelda clones, I've beaten them both too. But it says it on the box, just to illustrated the ambiguity around the "Role-Playing" term in some people's eyes...

Ha, yeah.
Though, in terms of TG16 releases, there weren't that many RPGs to choose from.
(though it looks like the ones they did have were interesting)
I still need to pick up Willow and Crystalis.
If you're a big fan of the movie, start with Willow, because your love of the film and characters will get you through the rougher parts of the implementation.
If you're not a fan of the movie, then you're dead inside.
(Crystalis is great, too -- it is much more straightforward than Willow as a game experience -- i.e. if you don't draw maps for Willow, or have the old Nintendo Power poster at your disposal, you'll have a tough time with it)
I've played it a little through emulation. I have a harder time sitting through longer NES games lately, but I wanted to give a few of the old school adventure ones a try again.
Alundra (psx)
Magic of Scheherazade (nes)
Willow (nes)
Crystalis (nes)
StarTropics (nes)
LandStalker (gen)
Spike McFang (snes)
Seiken Densetsu 3 (sfc)
Golden Axe Warrior (sms)
Gunman's Proof (sfc)
Honorable Mentions I haven't played much:
Beyond Oasis (gen)
Ys books 1 & 2 (turbo)
Teranigma (snes)
Crusader of Centy (gen)
Magic Knight Rayearth (saturn)
And I love Brandish unlike everyone else
I did like the movie. One of my friends back then was obsessed with it. I bet he had the game, too.

It has good breakpoints where you can safely walk away from the game without losing track of what you were doing.
Basically, after every boss, you're in a completely new area, and only need to backtrack a few times in the game.
My favorites:
StarTropics (nes)
Golden Axe Warrior (sms)
IF they fit OP's definition of "action-RPG", then yes, these both should be on the list.
StarTropics is one of the best games on the system, of any genre.

If you really want to be a genre nazi then Alundra, LandStalker, and Crusader are also action adventure games

It's been a long time since I've played it, but I thought Alundra had more "traditional RPG" elements like Crystalis.
(Landstalker looks to be similar in that way)
But yeah, Crusader of Centy looks like a straight Zelda-clone. (looks like I need to add that and Landstalker to my "to play" list)
Yes, I know this is super-nit-picky
Now, to complete the pedantry, we just need to find some of those wierdos that say SNES as a word rather than an acronym

Nope they both use the "gather money to buy heart containers" approach to "leveling". Alundra's even more blatent about it than LandStalker - just because LS at least has that isometric spin on the gameplay.
If you're curious about LandStalker I put together a review video awhile back. Does a pretty good job of highlighting the gameplay elements.

I think the Equinox-meets-Zelda style is a neat idea, for sure.
