Just got a PC Engine

After scouring all of Tokyo, I finally got myself a PC Engine. However, I only have Kato chan and Ken Chan as far as games go (JP version of JJ and Jeff, complete with toilet humor), so I'd love to know a few great games to buy for my newly-acquired toy. I heard there were some great shooters for it.

    Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire.

Seriously, though, Gunhed (Blazing Lasers) is a good shooter to start with.

  • I'm looking forward to the responses, too. I recently got a PC Engine Duo in a trade and am really excited to dive into the system once I procure an Everdrive. I found a cool channel on YT with a guy that does simple, non-flashy reviews for a ton of Turbo/PC Engine games. Here's a link to a playlist I'm going through right now; he has another round of them, too, if you go to his main page (and he has a website, if you're interested).

  • final soldier!
  • The bonks series, and I've been having a blast with super star soldier. Not sure what the japanese titles are but I'm sure you could figure it out
  • Gunhed, Final Soldier, Soldier Blade! Get Em All!
  • So many great games, so first I'd say get a CD-ROM2 system, Arcade Card Pro and an Everdrive. The shooters above are great, but I'd add Gradius, Parodius Da!, Salamander, Super Star Soldier, Tatsujin (Truxton), and Detana! TwinBee.
  • R-type 1 and 2

tatsujin is on PC engine? Is it better then the Genesis one?

Oooh I need to get that one! The Genny version is kickass

It's a great port of the arcade game, just like the Genesis version. I think the PC Engine version is more colorful.

  • FINAL SOLDIER FOR LYFEEEEEEE

I used to have a pc engine and an everdrive. I recently ordered another pc engine just so I could buy a CIB copy of final soldier, it's my favorite shooter ever!

As far as games here is a few that I've really enjoyed

    hana taka daka (cutem up)

    pc gengin series (bonk)

Toilet kids (shooter, your a kid on a toilet flinging poo)

Dragon spirit/saber (shooter, your a dragon and can grow two heads... enough said)

alien crush/ devils crush (really awesome pinball games)

Galaga '88 (galaga with super fun graphics and fire works)

Military madness (amazing military tactical RPG, if your into that sort of thing)

    Batman (fun arcade style game)

Gekisha boy (you take pictures for a news paper, if you read Japanese I'm sure you'll get more of the humor than I do, super strange premise)

Silent debuggers (metroid like but first person! really cool)

    Neutopia (zelda sort of clone)

    Splatter house (great arcade port)

Bomberman!!! (literally any one, but '94 is probably my favorite of the entire series on any system)

Street fighter 2 (really interesting port, very cool animations etc)

dungeon explorer (sort of like gauntlet)

Ninja spirit (2d action arcade type game, your a ninja so what's not to like!)

these are just some card games I've had fun with, let us know which you have fun with!!
  • Makai Prince Dorabocchan(kid dracula), Kiki Kaikai(pocky rocky), Die Hard, and S.C.I Special Criminal Investigation. These are all fun games and worth owning.
  • The nice thing if you get a CD-Rom setup, no copy protection. I've been playing CD-Rs in my Duo for 16 years now, don't believe the BS about them being harmful to the system. They can't burn up the laser by making it use too much power, they're not auto-adjusting lasers (Hence why they have pots to adjust them)
  • Get the everdrive hu card it's a must own for the console
  • Definitely get Final Soldier.

There's also some great unedited ports such as Splatterhouse, and Download is pretty hilarious. Salamander is good too.
  • Many great titles named already. Legendary Axe and Legendary Axe II are also great action-platformers on the system.
  • I have not seen it mentioned but I love the port of Cadash on the turbografx. It's so good and 2 player co-op.

I would get an everdrive because it's so worth it and will work as a system card if you decide to get the cd attachment. There are so many good cd games I would recommend getting one eventually.
  • I was playing Cyber Core last night. The gameplay is average (not bad by any means) but the music is great.
  • Everdrive and don't look back.

I've also heard the CD attachment is region free, is that true?

Yes.  All the Cd systems and attachements for the TurboGrafx and PC Engine are region free.

neat. I'm thinking I might get one
  • Well then I guess I'm gonna go for Final Soldier. Soldier blade seems quite pricey though. Final Soldier's cheaper than I expected...
  • Volfied is a great qix clone and pretty addictive.

Devil's Crush is probably the best console pinball game out there...

And Kaze Kiri - Ninja Action is a pretty good game for the Super CD-ROM.

I do second this, there are games that might be in the 2000-3000 yen range that are worth it but some games are just too much money for what your getting IMO if your just collecting to play this is a great option.

I love that game, but it seems to get a bit of hate. The amount of moves in the game is awesome.

Third. Not only you get the options to play rare (or just too dang expensive) games, you get to play homebrew and stuff as well. There's even a little switch to switch over to TG-16.

    Probably because it's Qix 2?

  • Just looked up Devil's Crush and man do I need to get that one! However I'm too much of a purist for an Everdrive. Not gonna happen unfortunately
  • My condolences to your wallet then.
