I was thinking there might be some simple trick for jumping on the clouds.

I was having trouble with the springboards in Adventure Island II until I figured out that you don't press jump when landing on them and they spring you automatically.

Definitely hold the jump button down to consistently jump higher. For the tornadoes, when they approach you, just turn your sword to them. That usually fends them off. At least they don't damage you. The eagles are the main problem.

Honestly I usually die at least once in the cloud area. I never, ever die in the water level. And the boss of that stage can only hurt you one way and it's easily avoided if you stay close to him.

For the cloud boss, keep a reasonable distance to be able to shoot the projectiles which will destroy them but also hit the boss. And pretty much all you need to do is button mash until he's dead. Of course you need at least half your magic bar full I believe. Mine is usually full just in case.

Also be sure to get the silver fleece spell in the underwater part of the water stage. There are only two chests and one key in that area. The blightwater spell is hidden behind a fake wall. When you enter the area, start descending down and to your right until you can't go down farther. Jump left through the fake wall to get the spell. Go back out through the fake wall and then walk along the floor to the right until you get a key. Then go up until you reach an area to jump to on your right. Go that way and when you get to the chest open it and get the silver fleece spell then follow the path straight back up. In the top are where the boss is there is an area with a big diamond. The higher platform to the right has a secret magic bubble stash as does an area at the water level to the right. Then get really close to the boss and shoot him in the face. The projectiles he shoots will not hurt you,but they will turn you the opposite way. So jump, tap right if he pushes you left,shoot...repeat.

Thanks for the tips. Maybe I can beat this.

I once completed two loops of Batman without a game over, I should be able to make progress in Ironsword.

Give me my participation points and lets never speak of this game again, onto the next
  • Oh my gosh, you can keep jumping by holding in the button. I didn't know you can do this. This changes everything.

I'm confident you'll be advancing in this game in no time. Just remember to grab the silver fleece spell in the water stage for the fire level....you'll need it. It temporarily protects you from the lava coming out of the craters. You can use it up to three times. The shop also sells it for $2300,so I recommend having at least that much when you get to that part so you can be able to buy the spell again if you run out of the spell you got in the water stage. I get around 3100 because I want to be able to get that plus a key for 800 ( I think) so I can get the horned helmet too.

Best of all,you can get temporary protection from the fire boss with it.
  • I still can't get the hang of the cloud section. I can get to the helmet, but then I just keep slipping off clouds and getting knocked about by enemies until I'm dead.

Unfortunately I don't think this game is for me.
  • Is a list of games already decided, or can I suggest one?

To each their own. Makes me kind of bummed that I'm in the minority in liking this game. I really did think it would get a much warmer reception than it has.

The biggest flaw this game has is making the air stage the first one as I understand that the cloud physics, tornadoes, and eagles taking constant pot shots can put off a lot of players.

It's inexpensive. I might give it another chance on real hardware at some point.

All I'm saying is everyone here is too skillful of a player to let Ironsword get the best of them. Not wanting to play it because they don't like it is a different story. I really wish more people liked it,I think it and the other two in the trilogy are great games.

Don't worry pal, they are all great NES games

Hopefully. 1 and 2 are pretty much the same style of game. 3 is different in that you can change classes (knight, thief, and wizard) each with three different skill levels. It's pretty cool. The attacks are a whole lot better in that one. The only downside is the music and graphics aren't that great for a game released later in the nes's lifespan.

However it does have perhaps the coolest game over setup ever for a nes game. So epic!

The thing I don't like about this game is the level layouts. I mean where the fuck am I suppose to go, what am I suppose to do? Does the manual explain anything? Just jump around exploring for a short time before death hits you? In the very forst stage,I might have gone for an hour + before I figured to (first find the egg) grab that egg and then (find the bird) give it to the bird. I mean ya egg, bird, makes sense but how the hell was I suppose to know there was an egg or bird?! On top of that, seriously, the attack, I don't even use it.

Idk guts. I think it takes a certain kind to enjoy this one   your a better man than me

  • Just a head's up for when you get to the forest part of the water level; the Waterspout spell is glitched. If you open the chest and get the spell, you'll lose the spell if you touch any food item, or enter any secret/other areas. Basically, when you get Waterspout, go all the way right and jump up in the trees as high as you can and DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING, lmao. Get as far right as you can, activate Waterspout, and you should have the golden fly item.

As Guts has said, once you get past the clouds, the game eases up a lot. They really shouldn't have made the mountains/clouds the first stages.

Lol. I was like "huh, I guess you have to open the chest twice." Witch I just thought was another random nonsensical puzzle. Lol.

Just be careful when you are trying to get the golden fly as there is a secret room on that last tree. It's hard to explain exactly but basically don't touch the trunk of the tree when jumping on the branches.

As far as the attack,I usually don't use it although attacking by jumping up towards the enemy and hitting them with the point of your sword is effective....especially the diamond sword.
  • Alas, it appears that the server that was hosting my cloud server decided to die a fiery death today.

My score picture will be back up tomorrow, along with a brand new and lower score/
  • Wind Boss (17,449)

This is it from me this week.

  • Hate. This. Game.

Why did developers ever think spamming the player with enemies ALL THE TIME was good design?  If I didn't have platformer title to pursue I'd honestly think about throwing the cart against the wall

I collected very little money and so I had the tiny dick sword upgrade (the first sword you find in the first cave) for most of the game. This score could be lower but I'm not sure by how much.

That's a pretty impressive run. Not sure I can tackle that, but I'm hoping for a top 3 finish at the very least. You never grabbed the battleaxe in the volcano?
  • That is a pretty great score, Guts. It will be tough to top that.

I think you have this one in the bag this week.

I am hoping to shave between 120K and 140K from my score tonight, but it will be almost impossible to beat the game just shy of 500K points like you did.
  • I'll just be happy to beat the game without using a Continue. If I can do that and dodge the treasures, I'll be satisfied.

I want to take at least second place this week just to force Brock to go for more than participation on this game.

If I end at least at second place this week, the fight for the first place on the Action/Platformer scoreboard will get pretty cramped and will make things interesting for when Mighty Bomb Jack rolls around.

No axe was grabbed. When I first starting trying to really lower my score I was concerned that I would die more often with inferior equipment. At first I did,but you eventually adjust.

Honestly the best advice I can give is to play this game like you are attempting a pacificist/semi speed run. Of course knowing exactly where everything important is in the entire game helps tremendously as I'm not wandering around lost while getting pelted by enemy fire.
  • I'm glad that participation is starting to come around! I have not had time at all to give this one a shot this week, so don't expect too much from me for when I finally get around to it!
  • I managed to get the helmet and the Wind's Bane. However, the room with the Wind's Bane is such a nightmare with tricky jumps and enemies that quickly deplete your health, that I was down to my last life with not enough health to reach the boss.

Another thing that sucks about this game is that there is exploration involved, but then the game punishes exploration with non-stop cheap hits.
  • The good news for anyone who is half-decent at this game is that the top 8 slots are there for the taking. We're not very good at this. Being able to reach level 2 will probably be good enough for top 8.
