The good news for anyone who is half-decent at this game is that the top 8 slots are there for the taking. We're not very good at this. Being able to reach level 2 will probably be good enough for top 8.
if you can make it to the water level, you should be able to make it to the fire level. The water level by far has the fewest cheap hit enemies.
I managed to get the helmet and the Wind's Bane. However, the room with the Wind's Bane is such a nightmare with tricky jumps and enemies that quickly deplete your health, that I was down to my last life with not enough health to reach the boss.
Another thing that sucks about this game is that there is exploration involved, but then the game punishes exploration with non-stop cheap hits.
The last enemy in the windbane room needs to go to hell

I haven't been able to get the Wind's Bane and then not be down to my last life with low health. Beating the first level in Ironsword is like beating Battletoads.

Those jumps and the mini demons are super annoying. My advice for those is to time your jump when the demon is floating upward so you can clear it. On that first one if you can keep it just at the edge of the screen it seems to shoot less.
Well, I experienced this game's version of the Rat Race glitch.
I made it to the entrance to the first stage boss with the Wind's Bane, helmet and three lives, but it wouldn't let me go in. I just got stuck there without being able to enter and without enemies being able to hurt me. Real nice. This game doesn't want me to win, lol.
EDIT: Apprently I got the "dying while going through a door" glitch. Don't try going through a door while real low on health or you might get stuck and have to reset. It really sucks when it happens before the boss.

That actually happened to me once. I just shrugged it off and reset. Just wait until you get to the water level,it will be much easier! Also for the cloud boss, position yourself to where it is just on screen....just enough to where your shots register as hits. I think I've posted this before, but shoot its' projectiles to destroy them and your shots will continue through and damage the boss. You can just about button mash the boss and kill him without taking damage but definitely take out any shots coming towards you with your own.
* Those orange guys can sap all your health almost instantly and they're all over the place. Sometimes they're on platforms that you need to be on.
* Unless you're holding down the jump button, after landing on a cloud, there's a brief moment where you can't jump again. This can totally screw you up.
* Falling a long ways down and having to climb back up. This is an issue with climbing levels in video games in general, but it's so annoying here.
* It's not a very large area, but it all looks the same, so it's easy to get confused and not know where to go. Because enemies are constantly draining your health, not immediately knowing where to go is death.
* Those clouds that you can't land on without sliding off.
* The wind pushing you off platforms.
It all adds up to one of the most aggravating first levels that I've ever played... at least until you know what to do. And when I was about to get to the boss with enough lives and health to beat it, I got glitched.
I beat the first level, finally! Now let's see how far I'll get.
I have two more lives.
EDIT: I couldn't figure out what to do and game over'd. But now I know that I can beat the first level.
Sweet! Okay, when you are falling from the sky, once you land look for a door entrance near you. It should be at the highest point around you. Once in there,go to the bottom where you will find a 1up and a key.
If you are super low on health I would just drop down to the ground and collect all the meat first
The chest at the far left of the area,up just a bit,is the water spout spell. The other one on the ground on the right side of the area is a shield. There also is a secret area at the last tree on the right side of the area near the ground where you can get two keys and some money.
To get the golden fly,you climb up the same tree with the secret cave and climb up and to the far right as you can and then use the water spout spell to get the fly. Take it the frog king, located at the door at the ground and he'll let you go to the next area. When you start out, drop down right then left, then drop straight down. There will be a secret area that contains another 1up and a big jewel.

That's cryptic. How would anyone figure out what to do with the water spout spell on their own?
Somehow I made it to the second level with three lives left.
It freaking blows that the game doesn't even refill your health between levels.
You can tell the programmers realized they made the first stage too tough because the next area is littered with food.
And to clarify that secret area with the two keys,it is exactly 5 platforms directly above the chest on the ground. Just touch the edge of the tree trunk and you should go in.
I want to take at least second place this week just to force Brock to go for more than participation on this game.
If I end at least at second place this week, the fight for the first place on the Action/Platformer scoreboard will get pretty cramped and will make things interesting for when Mighty Bomb Jack rolls around.
I think he knows he needs more than participation this week cobra Kai is more focused on the only icon worth winning, but I'm gonna try to steal this platformer one with my leftover effort.
Using continues I made it to the fire level. Now I should be able to make it there without them.
The fire level is tough.
The silver fleece spell is your friend. It will protect you from fire damage.
BTW, is there any trick to dealing with the orange guys in the cloud area? They do so much damage and they'll run back and forth on the platforms you need to land on. It seems like a matter of luck whether you get killed by them.
Made it to the second level boss on my last life, but didn't have enough health. I'm getting there! My goal is making it to level three and then I might be done.

Come on, you can beat that 1st level! I know you can! You have beaten Battletoads!
Still, you can do it! *cheerleaders*

Shaved 100K from my previous score. Still a lot of fat to trim there.
But now I need rum and Fabio inspiration.

Sweet!
The next two levels are so, but so much easier.
You might even manage to beat the game by Sunday now. Good luck.
You can do it!
I mean, it is no GNG, nor as easy as Rolling Thunder, nor has the sharp input of bubble bobble, but it is a solid, fun platformer.
They just screwed up the stage orders. Putting the air stage first definitely makes the learning curve much harder.
I'd love to learn this game and score some easy-ish points for the leaderboard, but I just can't. It's painful to play.
So you're saying it's for sale?

Every since this Gutsman guy starting playing more though I just can't stand it.....he is such an asshole.

I feel bad not being more into the contests...............some of the best time I have on NintendoAge.

Both of you suck at Nintendo games.
Using continues I made it to the fire level. Now I should be able to make it there without them.
