    The fire level is tough.

The silver fleece spell is your friend. It will protect you from fire damage.

BTW, is there any trick to dealing with the orange guys in the cloud area? They do so much damage and they'll run back and forth on the platforms you need to land on. It seems like a matter of luck whether you get killed by them.

I just avoid them entirely. Often I'll go into one of the secret rooms and come back out so I can reset the playfield.

And if you think the yellow guys (I don't see them as orange) are a pain, what until you meet the ghosts in the earth stage. Easily the most overpowered regular enemy in the game. They actually just ruined my potential sub 500k run by taking three of my lives,2 of which were 1 hit instant deaths. Yeah, that's fair.

Get up in that boss's face and blast to him death. The only attack that can hurt you are the waves that come from above to stay inside of that and you shouldn't take any damage.

Unfortunately I had almost no health when I got to the boss.

Okay, I survived to the beginning of level 3.

Level 2 is so much easier than level 1.

Did you get the silver fleece spell in the water level or have 2300 dollars to buy it in the fire level? It will make your life so much easier.

The fleece is easy to find. But I was on my last life and game over'd not long after reaching the third level.

This is a challenging game to get far in with no continues.

You'll get there! I do have to warn you that the earth stage goes back to the cheap hit stuff in the air stage except than more of the enemies hit really hard. Avoid the ghosts at all costs if you can.

Updated my score. Sooo close to a sub 500k score!

How fast was your run? You could probably speedrun this game.

  • Sometimes I'll die from one hit with a near full life bar? Wtf is that?

I've been averageing like 30-35 minutes. I didn't keep track of the 500k run because I was listening to some satellite radio while playing, but that 508k I had was 33 minutes although I did have a quick bathroom trip and soda grabbing trip mixed in. Still nowhere near that 13 minute run by Tom,but I bet he didn't grab any extra gear or lives. I always grab the lives just in case of some random hit instant death bs.

I could probably no death this if I collected most of the money to use for equipment and food. I've gotten to where I can consistently no death it up to the fire stage, but I usually die there because I save the silver fleece for the boss and I have no money to buy it again if I use it for the lava.

I love the game but yeah that part of it is complete ass. It seems like if you are hit in the head it happens more often than not, especially with the yellow star looking cloud runners and the mini demons. It definitely happens a lot in the earth stage with the bats and especially the ghosts.

No,but I remember Randy Johnson accidentally hitting a bird with a 90+ mph fastball.

    Lol! Holy shit!
  • How will progression be determined, within each stage? Necessary items collected?

All stages break into 2 sections, and each first section contains a necessary item we an see on screen. So, if you die in the woods, someone who dies in the woods with the golden bug will take precedence. Someone reaching the water section of stage 2 will take precedence over someone in the woods, but someone who get the water spell to beat the boss wouldn't be considered ahead of someone who didn't cause we can't see it easily on the screen.

    Is that clear enough buddy?

    Sounds good to me pal

im just glad it's not one of those "try not to accidentally rack points from those infinite spawning enemies" rule sets.

Or the "ya it's luck of the draw, if you get an item worth 10,000 or 500, but we're still playing max score" rule set.

  • This game can be frustrating, but I appreciate it much more than I did at first. I'm glad that I stuck with it for awhile. I'll probably buy the cart and try to beat it on real hardware at some point.

It's one of the quirkiest NES games I've played. It definitely does not play like a traditional action platformer and the cover art is hilariously misleading. It would make about as much sense to have a bare chested Fabio on the cover of Ghosts n Goblins.

So glad you stuck with it! I truly believe this game is underrated and under appreciated.

The main thing with this game is to know the lay of the land so you don't get needlessly pelted due to aimlessly wandering around. When you know exactly where to go and what to get from those areas, you can keep the cheap enemy hits at a minimum.

  • Here's how I tackle the cloud stage so as to limit enemy shot exposure.

Go right until I pick up the meat, then go left until I see the round money disc with the red dot. Then I go up until I get to the big square cloud with the little cloud on the side that leads to the secret room. Get the meat and magic bubbles there. Jump on top of the square cloud for meat. Jump up and left to go to the hole for the room with more meat and the helmet. Take the left exit from that room. Drop down a bit and go left to get the 1up,get the meat below it,go right and up into the hole to get the windbane spell, exit. Drop down a bit and head right until you are back to the big square cloud, then head up and right and jump to the hole to the boss room.
  • That's the order that I always take as well. Secret magic bubble room, helmet room, and then windbane and boss.
