What do you think of the Nintendo 64DD?

What are your thoughts?

I still have the reviews from a stack of all magazines back in 1999, and remember watching a few a vids on Youtube a couple of months ago which covered a span of games. The games that stuck out to me were SimCity 64, the F-zero expansion, and Doshin the Giant and DTG 2. Doshin seems interesting but I'm not sure how different it is from the Gamecube game. I'm also not very sure if the expansion offered anything new to the GC version either, and in any case you would need a transation app or some kind of english reference text to actually play, which doesn't seem practical.

I just love all things on magnetic disk, wish there would more games for it. I'll always find it cool, it seems hard to justify getting one though at any point.

Not sure if it works directly on US NTSC unit, and I'm sure prices are quite high, even though some of games from time to time can be found a reasonable price if you are really lucky. I'm sure you've heard that a U.S prototype was found recently.

How many of you find it interesting and why? Would your ever add it to your collection?

  • It's interesting to me because it was one thing I remember desperately waiting for and never getting, so it will always be in the back of my mind as "that thing we never got but always wanted". But there's no reason to have one other than for collector value. I collect games to play, not to sit on a shelf, and beyond trying one out for a little bit just to see it, I would probably never use it. I think it's a great collector's item though. It's still a shame it never left Japan.
  • It would be a fairly easy set to complete. What is it 6 games or something? Just expensive. Ive considered it just because it's cool and I like the n64. Like of all the obscure stuff out there that'd be the one I'd want. Just a steep price and I'd probably only try the fzero expansion and doshin for playing. I dunno maybe one day
  • I just recently bought one, so far I have bought Doshin the Giant, Sim City 64, Mario Artist: Talent Studio and Polygon Studio. I really only want Paint Studio and F-Zero X Expansion Kit now. The one I'm not sure about is the Communication Kit, not sure if it's worth having. I don't care to obtain Doshin the Giant 2, Japan Pro Golf Tour 64 and the Randnet disk because they're expensive or not games.

    There are 10 disks.

    Doshin the Giant

Doshin the Giant 2 (requires Doshin 1)

    F-Zero X Expansion Kit (requires F-Zero X JPN cartridge)

    Japan Pro Tour 64

    Mario Artist: Paint Studio

    Mario Artist: Talent Studio

    Mario Artist: Polygon Studio

Mario Artist: Communication Kit (used with the studio titles)

    Sim City 64

    Randnet disk (not a game)
  • I remember seeing previews of it in EGM back in the day, but I've never gotten to play one.
  • It would be a good mantle piece if cib. Dont see much more value than that though...
  • I love the 64, so yes.

In fact, my most wanted N64 related item is the Randnet modem used to get the DD on the internet.
  • I really like the idea of tech like this, or consoles that could have been, but the prices on it are way too high for me. Plenty of other obscure consoles or handhelds with libraries that have the genres I like (even if I can't read them). I think that I've only turned on the 64 twice this past year anyways. Yet, I still find myself looking up the 64DD on eBay every few months...
  • Not really.
  • I dunno, I would love to have one, but it's hard to get any longevity out of it. I can see homebrewers make N64 carts, but as far as the disks, that's something different entirely. So physical hombrew releases might be out of the question.
  • I honestly have not exhausted any thought or care on it until I clicked in this thread.

If I found one I would sell it to someone on here.
  • Nah, dont really care that much for the 64.
  • I find it interesting from a historical perspective, but it doesn't interest me beyond that. I would like to see one, but I don't think I would go too far out of my way for it.
  • I agree with a good amount of the people here. The 64DD is cool, but not something I feel like I need in my collection, mainly due to the price and the fact it doesn't have much play value.
  • I'll eventually add it to my collection, but will it get a lot of use? Probably not. I'd love to mess with the F-Zero X expansion pack, and Mario Artist and Sim City 64 could be fun to toy with, but there's not much else on it that I'd get into.
  • If I ever found it sitting in a pile of stuff in a garage sale for $50 or less then hell yes I'd pick it up for its coolness factor. Outside of that I can't see myself spending hundreds of dollars on a system that plays 6 games.
  • I actually already have one.

It's something I always wanted to own, just because I found it so interesting. I do use a Japanese N64, though I do have an American one somewhere that I've never tried with it.

The only games I don't have are Doshin 2 and Japan Pro Golf Tour, because they're absurdly expensive. Last time I looked (which was admittedly probably a year or so ago), they were like $450 each. The Mario Artist set is a pretty cool novelty in the vein of Mario Paint, while Sim City 64 and the F-Zero Expansion Kit are genuinely good games. I have also played Japan Pro Golf Tour (even though I don't own it) and that's also a very enjoyable golf game that I've put quite a few hours into.

Although I'm from the UK and therefore have easy access to the GC Doshin, I've never actually played it. I have tried it a little on the 64DD and it is rather difficult to get to grips with due to the language barrier, so I haven't really put any time into it.

I'm happy to answer any questions, though I'm not really sure how many there could be.
  • Side note - I'm sure everyone knows about the US prototype that showed up this past week in Washington?

The Japanese and American N64 consoles are the same thing, they share identical motherboards.

The wait for my disks to arrive has been grueling, made worse by the fact I have my 64DD system here already... Kinda wish there was more to do with the IPL ROM built into the console.
  • the only 64DD item I have is Mario artist paint studio. got it like 2 years ago and never got around to getting a 64DD console.
