S.C.A.T.

S.C.A.T. (Special Cybernetic Attack Team) is a reallllly good game for the NES. It also happens to be pretty damn rare. I raise a few points to discuss:

1. Did the guys at Natsume know that "scat" means shit and title this game for NTSC as an inside joke? I mean, it has 2 other titles, "Final Mission" for Japan and "Action in New York" for PAL. Just a really funny name that I can't help but think someone knew.

2. This game is a shmup version of Contra. The sound effects, weapons (laser, spreader, etc.), just everything says Contra in the format of an automatically scrolling screen. Did the people who worked on this have some sort of relationship to Contra or Konami? It's beyond a blatant rip-off imo, but hey, I love it!!!

3. Can people seriously beat this game without cheating? The 3 hits and its game over is pretty rough. Too bad the Konami code wasn't lifted for this game too!

I think they just didn't know. There's been a lot of instances where games, movies, etc. have inadvertant meanings in other cultures.
  • This was Natsume?! Man Natsume killed it back then

Ive beaten in a few times.  Just map memorization.  You get infinite lives too.  Its one of those games the better you play the easier it gets, since you can stack health.  Last level is a toughy but the final boss is easy.

  • I like the European cover, where a dude in spandex and a headband is yelling at a low-rent Cylon. Just screams 80s-early 90s.
  • If it had that soundtrack I'd pay its current asking price.
  • I need to get back to this game. Fired it up for the first time a couple of years ago (I think thanks to an older S.C.A.T. thread here). Probably got about 3/4 the way through the game but didn't go back to it. It's definitely solid for sure, probably one of the better shooters on the system.
  • now the real question is, who has a copy they want to trade me   ?

Haha but seriously, this game looks awesome! I've been trying to get this for 2 years now, with no luck, so I can attest that yes this game is frickin hard to find!
  • It really is a great game, but for whatever reason, I just can't seem to really get into it.
  • The gameplay is very similar to the Capcom arcade game Forgotten Worlds which had a number of home ports. If you're a fan of SCAT, you should try it. The Genesis version is a lot of fun.
  • I played this 3-4 times tonight. It seems pretty cool but I couldn't get past the first boss. It seems to take exorbitant amount of hits to kill as I was pelting the hell out of it to no avail.
  • This game sounds like shit.
