Flea market find/rip off

So I was at a flea market in Gresham over the weekend, and at an electronics both I find a copy of Mega Man 3 in a box of cables and random crap.  Buy it for $5, which I though was decent, till I get home and pop it into the ol' toploader.  Turns out, it's freaking SMB.  Now here is the weird part, the box is five screw (didn't even think to look at the flea market).  There is no possible way the Mega Man 3 ever came in a 5 screw box, right?  I am guessing the label must have just been switched, but I can't for the life of me figure out how, or why some dude at a flea market would go to so much trouble for just a few bucks.  Anyone have any alternet ideas?

  • Can you make some close-up pics at a decent resolution so we can see? Top and front label? Thanks image

And yes, you're correct MM3 was very much out of 5-screw range. If it's just plain-old SMB1, it's most likely a label swap.
  • I would like to see a pic of it too please!
  • Gresham Oregon?
  • Alright, here are a few pics.  The more I look, the more I am sure someone just switched labels.  The label has lifting on a few edges where the paper part of the sticker is still stuck to the cart, but the glossy front is separated.  The biggest thing to me though, is that the front label is not centered very well.  I just can't imagine why someone would go to the trouble of putting a different label from a fairly common cart.  And yes, Gresham, OR.  The flea market right next to the Oregon Flea Market on Stark.  And sorry about the crappy pic from the top of the cart, I just couldn't get my camera to focus there.
  • yeah, definitely looks like a replaced label to me
  • Yeah, replaced label for sure.
  • Sorry bro, but on the bright side, the story is worth $5 even if the game is not image
  • Stories like that are always funny, I found a multicart board inside a volleyball cart once.
  • so did they make a 5 screw mario 3? or was the board switched too?

    It's SMB1.

  • Ya, strange indeed. I just wonder what happened to the Mega Men 3 cart that now has no label. It just doesn't make sense for someone to do this. I guess it could have been from a long time ago and someone switched the labels to trade in a fake mm3 at gamestop or funcoland.
  • honestly that is the best re-applied label i have ever seen. it is near impossible to remove a label from a NES game without tearing it. Props to whoever did that. I too would have paid 5 bucks for it and the funcoland scenario is likely, that or a rental store.

i've found many a game that has a legend of kage board in it when it shouldn't... all five screw or non-security screw games and decent ones.
  • ^ I was thinking the same thing, that is a damn near perfect label swap. Whoever did that must have had a lot of practice.
  • Lol!!! That looks so funny! I love it! Sorry.
This summer I found a Pro Wrestling with the lable upside down becuase I have heard of this sort of thing. And it definitly looks better that that but alsas..... its a fake too. The way you can tell is the bend. The games are15+ years old and that bend is there forEVer. Best I can guess is some kid years ago was messin around?
    Thanx RASK1904
  • Yeah, I'm banking on the Funcoland trade-in. I had thought of buying up a bunch of SMB/DH's, getting the security bit, and swapping out the boards with expensive games.

Then I decided I like the labels too much.

...bear in mind I was like 12 when I thought of that.
