This system has been out since 2014, if not earlier. It's not an emulator. It's an official clone, like the Genesis model 3.
I wouldn't say this console is bad at all. It probably sells very well in malls and pharmacies. It's targeting the crowd of people who recognize Sonic and want to relieve their childhood memories for a moment or show it off at a party. It's only meant to be played casually. If you can tell the audio is off, you are definitely not in the target demo. If you know the difference between composite and component video, this isn't for you. You guys are in the minority.
100% true. I've had this last iteration for about 8 months now and nobody else has ever pointed out sound issues at my house. While it's blatantly obvious to any one of us, I would agree that we are in a minority group. Everyone who has ever come over to my house and played it or seen it in action is fully under the belief that the Genesis sounded that way. I've explained it to a few people and they still didn't fully understand what I was saying at first, they thought I was just dogging 16-bit audio in general, but I explained a 2nd time that it doesn't sound authentic to an original Genesis, the pitch is way off. Truth be told, I use it to casually play games I don't own and even I also don't notice that the sound is wrong. Titles like Ecco Jr, Golden Axe 3, Comix Zone... I use the Atgames console to play those games all the time, it's the only "console" we keep in our master bedroom, and, not having the actual carts to compare it to, I am not bothered whatsoever with the audio...definitely the Sonic games have the most atroicious sound...but for other games, it isn't something I notice.
You know it just hit, considering how freaking tiny the console is, why not include a rechargeable battery inside too? You're using the same hardware for the portable one, add that shit.
Funny how a few news sites just find out about these things and blow up the internet with false headlines about sega jumping in now to compete with nintendo's mini nes, lazy clickbait reporting.
I'm more interested in the $37 arcade stick version on Amazon... mostly so I can gut it for the control panel.
It seems to me that there has been a renewed push for these including promotion on Unbox Therapy and Retro Rob's channel. I wouldn't doubt that AtGames would send review samples again in light of the mini NES buzz so that they could ride the wave.
Just sift through Facebook posts and you'll see waves of people that think this is totally brand new, that there are 80 Genesis games, and are excited as all hell about it.

I was gonna argue that it would then make it a portable system instead of a console, but then I realised that most TV-games use batteries (regular ones, but still).
So yeah, why the Hell not? lol Heck, fix the sound and add save features, and this console would be pretty neat IMO.

Great, it's going to make people gripe about the NES mini. "Well, the Sega one plays carts, why can't Nintendo's? Whine whine whine, bitch bitch bitch."

Would you be so kind as to link that particular item, that has me very curious.

It seems that I'm not the only one to have this idea because I researched it and found an old tear-down on YouTube where the guy suggests the possibility.
I wish I had ordered a bunch of the old Messiah Generation Nex Wireless Arcade sticks back when Amazon had them for $15 (intended for the old NES clone console; itself made to look like an NES Advantage made with arcade-style components).

This is interesting: according to this Popular Mechanics article, the upcoming AtGames Genesis clone will ditch the composite output for HDMI along with supporting games with save files. It definitely sounds like AtGames updated the internal hardware, it makes me slightly hopeful the audio issues that long plagued the iterations of this clone might be addressed.
If they include a way of saving, those handheld versions would be awesome especially for kids. That was the deal breaker for me when I bought one last year. I did find an older "console" in a thrift store which considering I got it for like $5 I couldn't complain much but the audio indeed sucked and the included controller as well.
If they are indeed stepping it up I will be watching for one again.

yea I have one of those, got it last Christmas. it plays mega drive and genesis games. only 20 or so games on mine are sega genesis games though, the rest are junk titles like "snake" and other horrible games.
Yeah, I don't know why they would pad it out with crap games that you can instantly compare to genuine Sega games (sound issues aside.)
I mean, plenty of plug n plays have those games that are barely games, but they tend to just have those games by themselves, not some by a major developer alongside them.
The Sega one has more games (I believe it has 40 even though the rest are NOT Genesis games), is cheaper, and plays a lot of the old carts, though it has no HDMI at least yet and has crappy wireless controllers. No save states either at least yet.
The MiniNES has less games, doesn't play carts, and is more expensive but has HDMI, save spots, and reliable wired controllers.
I would NEVER buy any AtGames Genesis products, I can handle almost all of the emulation problems audio/visual, BUT the thing that's the kicker for me. It doesn't allow for battery back up saving on games that support it (RPG's, koei games) that's a huge, huge deal breaker for me. At that point, at least a genesis on a chip clone by retro bit or hyperkin or whatever would at least let you save your games.

Unless they changed something in the system itself, it just looks like a quick cash grab from the Nes mini announcement.
That's exactly what it is and I bet it works (somewhat) for them. I've already seen a few people mention it like it was new.

What I don't understand is the old versions were all games that never had saves to begin with (even Sonic 3 has always been omitted)
However, this latest one will include many games that you were supposed to be able to save your game. Wonder how that will/won't work.

Wanted one, but a friend said no. Audio problems.
If you're into fixing things, this guy shows how to fix the audio problems on the Radica models:
