Nintendo Switch Rumormill, Speculation, & Fact Thread

Eurogamer has unnamed sources that have given them a description of the upcoming Nintendo NX. This is all rumormill of course so YMMV, but Eurogamer is a reputable site so this article carries a bit of weight with me:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-07-26-nx-is-a-portable-console-with-detachable-controllers

The important bits from the article:
  • The NX will be a portable console with own screen
  • The NX will have two controllers on each side which can be detached and used seperately
  • The NX will plug into a base station and function as a console on an HDTV
  • Games will be stored on 32GB cartridges
  • The NX will be powered by a Tegra chip, Nintendo is not chasing graphical prowless at the expense of portability
  • Nintendo learned from the marketing disaster of the Wii U, will keep NX marketing simple
  • Splatoon & Super Smash Bros Wii U may receive ports to the NX, Miyamoto is working on Pikmin 4 for the NX
Edit:

DigitalFoundry, which I believe Eurogamer got some of the above information from, has said it confirmed from sources that are working with the NX dev kit that the NX will be powered by the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip. DF does speculate that the X1 chip in the dev kit could be a placeholder for a more powerful custom offshoot of the X1 or possibly the still-under-development X2.

DF uploaded a video this evening re-capping what they have learned about the NX:

EDIT 2:

WSJ reported a source that the NX will support Nintendo's smartphone games.

EDIT 3:
  • A new Pokemon & Mario game will be part of the NX launch line.
  • The NX's performance will be somewhere "between a PS3 and PS4".
  • Nintendo isn't targetting the PS4 gaming crowd, wants to woo casual, semi-casual, & smartphone gamers.

EDIT 4:

More NX rumors:
  • The detachable controllers will include Wii-Motion Plus motion controls. The waggle will live on.
  • The NX portable screen resolution will be 720p. The final screen size for the NX is unknown, but the prototype model sports a 6.2" screen.
  • The NX dock will include at least 2 USB ports.

EDIT 5:

More NX rumors:
  • The NX prototype is region free. Developers have not heard anything from Nintendo about region-locking on the NX.
  • The NX will support UE4 & Unity engines.
  • The NX will drop the traditional Nintendo D-pad in favor for a Playstation-style split D-pad as well as include a 'Share' button.
  • The NX handheld will have a TV-out connection port, possibly mini-HDMI.
  •  NX announcement may come prior to the Tokyo Game Show on Sept. 15th

Edit 7:

IGN recently talked NX rumors and discussed dirt dished by an unnamed developer source. Two of the rumors discussed stood out:
  • The detachable controllers are low-budget, similiar to the nunchuk. The controllers may be communicate to the NX via IR and are meant to be cheap travel controllers, not the main way to control the game.
  • The dock having the potential to contain additional hardware "is possible"

Nintendo UK leaked the Zelda BotW Amiibo launch date as March 4th. Since BotW will be a WiiU/NX title, will March 4th be the launch of the NX?

Edit 8:

The CEO of the Pokemon Company pretty much confirmed in an interview with the WSJ that the NX will be a console/handheld hybrid:

“The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device,” said Mr. Ishihara. “We will make games for the NX.”

Edit 9:

More rumors:

* UK retailer Tesco accidentally listed the Nintendo NX with a retail price of $350. This could be the launch price of the NX or simply a placeholder value put in by Tesco in advance of the unannounced launch price by Nintendo.

* According to a source at Foxconn, the NX will include a "performance module" that houses the CPU/GPU, allowing for future upgrades in performance.

Edit 10:

Destructoid is reporting a rumor that Nintendo is funding the development of Beyond Good & Evil 2 as an NX exclusive title.

  • Sounds about as expected, I like what I hear. The 32GB limit worries me a bit but I wonder if they could use digital downloads to circumvent that if needed.
  • Yep! Also, the NX Operating System WILL NOT be Android-based. It will run on an original Nintendo OS.
  • Sounds too different for 3rd parties to bother to support...again
  • I don't get why it has to be portable. I mean I guess it could be cool to play console games wherever you wanted, but you can do that with the 3DS already.
  • If true, I like that it's cartridge based. I worry how gigantic this thing is going to be. How can it be both portable and have two controllers attached, while having the guts of a full console?

teh lurv's post makes it sound like each game gets a 32GB limit (i.e. cartridges).

That is a huge game, even by modern standards.

In terms of cost of "cartridges", some proprietary shaped device that is really just using 32GB SD cards, is probably at some kind of sweet spot for cost-per-unit where "cartridges" are more cost effective than significantly larger on-board storage.

This...if I am a developer and making good money on PS4/Xbox using x64 what incentive do I have to port all my code over to work on this.  It will be another system where Nintendo is left all alone to support it.  The upside this generation would be that Nintendo wouldn't have to support 2 systems and all games can just come to the NX.
  • I'm intrigued at best, I still need to be sold on the NX. I can't wrap my head (yet) around how this will work. If it's tedious like the Wii U was I'll skip it. Who knows though, this could be groundbreaking. I'll wait for more details and to see it in person before I pass judgement.

I think the console will be the controller. The base is just something that will let it output to TV. I can't see the controller being much bigger then a 3ds
  • Pretty much exactly what I've been expecting since we first heard about the NX outside of the game cartridge. I actually expected digital download only. So this is actually slightly better than what I anticipated.
  • Hopefully it will be a good system.
  • I am with Kraken. I can't wrap my head around this thing. It sounds so interesting, and I feel like I'll definitely be getting it, but I can't wait to see what it's deal is.
  • The details on the NX sound so freaking similar to the Neo Geo X and we all know how that went.

I don't think 32GB is a hard limit of capacity, but the storage size Nintendo will be producing at launch. I have little doubt the storage space of the carts will increase over time as production costs fall & storage demands rise.

The Neo Geo X wasn't made by Nintendo.  That's pretty much all you need to know about that.

Honestly, with a Tegra processor and the other descriptions, it sounds more like a Nintendo-branded sup'd up Nvidia Shield.

  • 32 GB would likely be plenty for a Nintendo title but I know I have installed plenty of games that get close to that limit. No reason they couldn't expand it though.

The rest is underwhelming. I do not want a hybrid handheld/home console. For a couple years I have been hoping for something on par with the ps4 but this may not be it again. Despite this I am sure there will be one hooked up to my TV in the spring. It won't be replacing my 3ds or Vita for travel though.
  • Sound kinda dumb IMO, but I'm sure I'll end up buying one. Nintendo should just come out with a newer version of the WiiU with more memory, and third party games. The NX sounds like it's trying to be to many things.
  • While I am concerned about 3rd party support yet again, I can't wait to see the console. And knowing me, it'll probably be a day 1 purchase anyway just like Wii U was. Nintendo still makes quality games, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt as always. They doubted Gamecube, I love me some Gamecube games. They doubted Wii, I love me some Wii games. They doubted Wii U, I love me some Wii U games. They will doubt NX and I will love me some NX games as well.

The future is changing and we have to accept it. More people are into portable gaming than ever before thanks to phones, tablets, etc. This is Nintendo's way to get their foot in that very large door without having to sacrifice their main fanbase. As seen with Pokemon Go (even though I think it wasn't made by Nintendo), it shows people want portable Nintendo games. This is our future.
  • Pretty much what we had already heard (although with more specific details this time). I look forward to the official announcement. I skipped the WiiU but I think I will probably get this, because I really like the idea of a portable/console hybrid.
  • I also believe that Pokemon Go is going to greatly influence their plans for NX. I don't see how it could not.

Yep, that's my opinion as well. Honestly I'd be happy with an upgraded 3DS so I'm happy about this. Especially since it's cartridge-based.

Kotaku created a mock-up illustration of what they think the handheld will look like in its different forms:

  • So very interesting. I am very much looking forward to a full demo of some sort, even though that is a far ways off.
  • I'm so glad about the 32 GB cartridges, my biggest issue with xbox one and ps4 is how you have to download the game even if you have the disc for it. 32 GB can't handle huge games like GTA 5, but Nintendo barely let Watchdogs be on the Wii U, so they probably won't let large games like that be on the NX. Along with that most games even by even xbox and ps4 standards are under 32 GB, so its going to be interesting to see how many people will want this just for the lack of initial download, and if people will want to port their games for it for the same reason.
  • There's a Zelda being released for it too?
  • If Pokémon Go has any influence on this, won't it need some sort of cellular internet connection? Somehow I don't see Nintendo partnering up with any of the big telecom companies.
  • Kind of surprised that I've read many posts commenting on all this as if fact, when in reality we don't know for certain just yet.
  • Ill wait to hear more, but it sounds like more gimmicks to me
