It has a bad,bad case of the Gradius syndrome which I hate and worse, the game starts you off with only half of your health bar. They could've just made the health bar full,or halved it and it'd still be full...albeit shorter. I'd have been cool with either. But to make it like they did....half empty..is a huge FU to player in my opinion. It's like...hey look,we could have easily made this a full health bar to help you...but no,we're going to be assholes and only give you half. And oh by the way, lots of enemies take off two bars of health.....you're welcome!

So factor that in with the Gradius syndrome and you have a game that's frustrating to play if you die.You pretty much may as well hit the reset button.

A small saving grace is that if you die once you only lose the weapon that you were currently using and can use the other one if had been powered up,but overall it's still a gigantic pisser.

And the stage 4 boss as well as the jumps you have to make can suck my ballsac.

I haven't played enough of the game to know, but can't you heal up to the max that the health bar allows?  If so, the way to look at it is that you start off with full health with the opportunity to earn up to double health!

  • ^That is a positive way to look at it for sure. Not the way I view it though.
  • Stage 4 is kind of a pain in the ass. You have to dodge and shoot enemies while also constantly making jumps. You can be doing fine, make one wrong move, and totally blow it.

Absolutely, which makes your run essentially dead.
  • Definitely. Stage 4 can be very annoying because of that. And emulator input lag makes it worse.

I usually started a new game right away when I died at stage 4 on my attempts last night.
  • Minor score udate.
  • I wish I'd made it to stage 7 with more lives. The stage 6 boss cost me a bunch of them.

BTW, you don't need to no-death the game to reach stage 7. You just have to not use any continues.
  • Great score, mbd39.

That pushes me back to 4th place for the time being. I will need manage to score really big Sunday if I am to hope to stay in the top 5.

It's pretty funny that a couple posts above my score I mention how I awful I am at this game.

I've had this game for awhile and before the contest I could only get as far as the second stage boss or maybe the third stage. I'm actually not sure anymore what my big problem was. It's not that difficult.

  • Looking good so far losers

    Kobra!

i mean, this game is really fun.

  • Yes! Cobra commander is the best!
  • Seriously, this game is sweet.

  • Update: Reached the final boss. Couldn't beat him. This score might be the best that I can do.

You still got two days. You got it.

1943 is by far the best shooter this year.

Isolated warrior is the next best, it's not a traditional scroller but, to me, the control is nice, weapon selection is fair, not to mention pretty cool, the focus beam, at max power, just destroys everything. Add in the bombs and there is plenty of fire power. The game plays pretty fluidly imo. I really enjoy this one.

    Guruss was cute.

Legendary wings is is just a garbage wannabe. Shit graphics. Cheap attempt to be different with the vertical to horizontal switch. Lame as fuck repetitive boss battles. I mean the bosses themselves are kinda cool in a "what the fuck is that" kind of way but when you have to fight the same ones every level, that's lame.

    Roadblasters is a disgrace. Lol.

should be an interesting final shooter showdown

I like Gyruss. It's repetitive in its' stages and bosses, but it's not a bad game at all.

1943 would have been better had they not nerfed your plane with special weapon time limits. Dumb as hell.

Legendary Wings is repetitive, but it's not a bad game. The graphics aren't amazing, but the certainly aren't terrible. What's there is good, there's just not a lot of variety.

Isolated Warrior has some cool features but also some really dook ones. The jumping mechanic is clunky as hell and the game suffers from bad slowdown at times. Stage 3 when the platform you are on waves around comes to mind the most. It's not a bad game, but it's certainly not top tier.

Stage 4 got me again.  This is probably all the time I'll spend on it this weekend.  Best of luck to all!

Ya, gyruss is a cool idea. I like it too.

The he timer really isn't that bad once you get it built up.

I guess I was a bit harsh on legs dart wings huh? It's ok I guess
  • What's wrong with the jumping in IW? It's extremely floaty as if you're leaping on the moon, but that gives you a lot of time to stay clear of enemies and projectiles, and to control where you're going to land.

Slowdown is to be expected in a NES game.

    Oh alright sure.

  • If anyone is having trouble with the stage 4 boss, it is possible to insta-kill it. I've insta-killed it a few times without even trying to.
  • Stage 5 is where the isometric platforming has resulted in some cheap deaths. You're on a narrow moving platform and have to jump off it. Instinctively I try to walk to the edge of the platform before jumping off, which results in me falling off. Now I know better, but that's an infuriating place to die it's so close to the end of the stage.
  • 1. 1943

    2a. Gyruss

    2b. Isolated Warrior

    4. Legendary wings
  • I'd think higher of IW if the controls didn't seem a tad unresponsive

Have you progressed much further since you last posted a score?

It just seems clunky. Honestly all the walking stages just seem slow and clunky to me. His jump is lethargic, especially with the back flip.

The honestly the game is not bad at all,it just seems like the walking stages are a little slower paced than they should be.

That's for Brock to know and skinny to speculate!
