i do agree with you on the manuals tho.

but pick up pikmin 3, its under $20 now and is a masterpiece. its a short game but great.

I might pick up a Wii U if it comes with Pikmin 3 for cheap. That the only game that I really want to play on that system.
  • I love my WiiU if for nothing else, my daughter really enjoys it.

and for me, DK Tropical Freeze was worth the console cost by itself.
  • No regrets at all, hell, the girlfriend has played Splatoon every day for the last 14 months or so......literally.....every.....day.
  • Since the N64, I've just assumed you get Nintendo systems for the high quality first-party titles, and if anything third-party comes out for it, that's icing.

In this sense, WiiU has not failed. Splatoon, DK Freeze, New Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Smash, Mario Kart 8, Yoshi Woolly, and Hyrule Warriors have been enough that I would be happy with the system overall if you froze the library today.

Xenoblade Chronicles X, Affordable Space Adventures, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions provide some nice third-party choices.

The only thing I'd say is that the Wii U Gamepad, largely, failed. Very few developers were willing to make the asynchronous commitments it needed, or design games exclusively for its unique play style.

Even the first-party choices I mentioned above, save Mario Maker, are completely playable, if not superior, on Pro Controllers.
  • No regrets, I bought it a few months ago, so most of the games are already out, and since I never had a Wii, I'm playing those games, upscaled through Wii U.
  • Nope, I love the Wii U. It gets so much flak for everything but honestly has a great library of first party games and a lot of the eShop only stuff is very good as well. The only thing I regret is not buying an external hard drive yet so I can play Xenoblade.
  • No way! There is a lot of solid titles and a ton of multiplayer games. My wife and I just finished Yoshi's Wooly World and are now playing through Tropical Freeze. My wife doesn't like video games all that much but she loves the Wii U!
  • I don't own one, but I do own games for the system. I mostly play my friend's WiiU when I get the chance.

So far, what I've played seems to warrant a purchase someday. Especially Bayonetta 2, I freaking love that game (I'm glad I was able to get one with the first game too!)

Not only that, it's backwards compatible with the original Wii games, so it kinda makes the regular Wii seem to be a regrettable buy.
  • Nah, I'm very happy with the purchase, definitely got my mileage out of it.
  • Definitely worth the money in my family.

It was the go-to system for a while before we got a few more computers. My wife played the shit out of all of the LEGO games and Toad Tracker, my daughter's favorite game is Lego City and she still plays it.

When they look back at their gaming childhood they'll mostly think about the Wii-U and PC gaming.

For me personally though, I only play stuff with my kids on it and never really gave it a shot for hardcore gaming.
  • This generation I've been very impressed with Nintendo's first-party efforts.

For instance Mario Kart 8 is a perfect logical continuation to the Mario Kart series, and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is everything I hoped for that Donkey Kong Returns couldn't quite deliver.

And on the third party front, Xenoblade Chronicles X is a game you can literally live in. Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water are just awesome.

I can go on, but these games alone warrant a Wii U purchase, since they are the kind of games I might clock 100+ hours in. HOWEVER keep in mind I don't own a Wii U yet. Waiting to snag one on-the-cheap. (Expecting these to be heavily discounted around Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Christmas sales with the NX looming.)

Also if you have kids, getting one is a no-brainer.
  • Technically Xenoblade X is a first-party title, Nintendo fully owns Monolith.
  • While I'm not playing on it all that often right now, the few games I have for it are excellent. I bought mine used (and glad I did) but I don't regret the purchase at all.
  • I don't regret it at all. There are plenty of great games for it. I've gotten my money's worth out of it for sure.

I do dislike the gamepad, though. I have small hands, and my thumbs start to hurt after a while of using it. The pro controller is great; I use it whenever I can.
  • My family uses it as a Netflix, Amazon prime, and YouTube box. Got our money's worth just from that. Another game not mentioned yet is Lego City. It's not often there's a GTA style game I can play with my daughter. She still plays it from time to time.
  • Not even a little bit and I'm on my 2nd one. Late at night I'll sit in bed with the lady and she'll watch TV while I game it up on the gamepad.
  • I don't regret buying a Wii U at all, but I will say that I have not spent much time playing it in the last year or so despite quality releases that I haven't purchased for it yet.

I have largely fallen out of love with modern gaming, but Nintendo games still hit that sweet spot for me. I'll keep buying the latest and greatest from Nintendo even if my playing time is diminished in favor of more vintage gaming.

And, evidently, I need to set aside some time to finally open up and play DK Tropical Freeze!
  • I mostly play PC and really only touch the Wii U for Netflix/Hulu or when friends come over to play some multiplayer games. Even with that I still love my Wii U, my friends and I have gotten countless hours of entertainment from Mario Kart 8 alone. If I didn't play PC or another system and WII U was my only modern gaming outlet I could see being disappointed but, there are still some really solid titles for the platform.

  • I have zero regrets and in the first two years it got quite a lot of use. However, after that point my use of it went downhill pretty quickly, seeing very little activity asides from Mario Maker and Xenoblade in 2015, to collecting dust entirely in 2016. A sad state of affairs.

Yes, you do. For me, it was easily one of the most enjoyable games on the system.

Pretty much the same with the exception of StarFox Zero causing a blip in activity in 2016. Though I haven't touched the PS4 much either other than Rocket League on occasion. I must be getting old and crusty lol
  • This generation in general has been pretty disappointing for me. There are enough Wii U games that I've enjoyed to make me not regret the purchase, although the first year I owned it I barely played it at all (before they started releasing games for it). I've played my PS4 just about as much as my WiiU, but I think that has the better library, especially with the games they showed at this year's E3. I've mostly used my XBone for games that I could play on other consoles/PC, but purchased for the XBox just so I could use it for something.

There are some disappointments for sure. Xenoblade Chronicles X was fun but ultimately fell flat of what I wanted after playing the original last summer (the story was terrible). Super Mario Maker is an excellent idea/game, except Nintendo fucked it up by deleting random stages, and not allowing you to re-upload them unless you recreate it from scratch, making creating and sharing stages a waste of time with the threat of it being deleted always looming. Because of that I stopped creating stages after having two of mine deleted within a month of uploading it (and no, it didn't break any rules wasn't even very difficult). Kirby's Rainbow Curse was ok but having to look at the gamepad the whole time made the beautiful graphics on the screen a waste. And Star Fox Zero was honestly mediocre at best.

There's been some excellent games though. Mario 3D World is fun with a group. Pikmin 3 might be the best game on the system. The Zeldas, while just remasters, are classic games in their own right and look great on the Wiiu. Splatoon, while unfortunately not a game I've been able to get very much into, is a great new IP from Nintendo. I have Bayonetta and Wonderful 101, which I've heard great things about and am hoping to get around to playing before the NX comes out.
  • ok , so I have though about getting either wii fit U or pikmin 3 to try and get into the wii u again. which is the better buy?

umm wii fit u is an excercise game thats not even really a game

pikmin 3 is a pikmin game. Do you like pikmin? then you will like pikmin 3

Odd choices for someone to choose between who apparently regrets buying the system

what games do you have and what games do you like?
  • Nintendo still has Wii Fit U for sale direct on Ebay for 25 shipped, I think
  • Yeah... if it's between Wii Fit U or Pikmin 3, definitely get Pikmin 3. However, if you have played the other Pikmin, you might be slightly disappointed in how this one recycles enemies and gives you hints on how to beat them (whereas you had to figure that out yourself in the previous two games). It's also a lot shorter than Pikmin 2. Still, it's great and you'll enjoy it if you like RTS-style games.

Yeah, Star Fox was literally just a blip for me. Couldn't get into it and traded it in a week later. Wii U, back to collecting dust.
