Starting my NES adventure

  • It's pretty clear to me that he is on the fence about it buying physical carts or a flash cart, that's why he's asking about the N8 and if buying the carts is worth it or not. I said "buy a flash cart". He asked for my opinion why, and I provided it. Looking at his list, for just that stuff alone it's probably around $600. If he thinks that's worth spending just to play some NES games then fine. I don't think it's worth it.
  • Looking back, it seems that he is more interested in titles as suggestions for playing, regardless of the format.
  • If he's not even sure of what games to buy, a flash cart makes even more sense. Play everything and then decide what you want to collect before spening hundreds on games you may or may not like.  You also get all the Famicom games, hacks, translated stuff etc.  Even if you decided to buy physical carts a flash cart is still worth owning.

Totally. I love the Everdrive! It's so bad!

Oh, that was me. I didn't feel like giving your petty agenda more time than an erase and funny write up. Consider this your first and last warning to quit with your hate in this thread.

It does seem like you have become more reasonable in your more recent posts, so thanks for that snookums.

Petty agenda?  What are you even talking about?  I was asked for my opinion so I gave it, did you not read the post where he directly asked me about it?  If you had actually read the thread you would have see that, but instead you censored my post because it hurts your feelings or something.  You are the one being petty, abusing your powers because you disagree with me.  Is that what being a moderator on NA is all about now?

  • Sorry, I hate quote trains.

Nah, you like to let everyone know that physical carts are dumb and if you buy anything physical it's dumb. You call people middle school names for wanting reproductions. It's gotten old. And I was PM'd about your behavior, hence me taking some action in hopes you'd cut it out. Call it abuse of power if you want. I call it trying to keep repeated and unnecessary negativity off the forums. Thanks.
  • Getting back to games, I don't believe anyone had mentions the 4 dragon warrior games that came out for the NES. If you haven't played them yet on some other system they are worth getting for the NES.
  • I'm all for Pegboy giving his opinion as long as it doesn't result in offending someone else intentionally, so maybe placing your (Pegboy) opinions on collecting/flashcarts in your signature will remind everyone of those specific opinions? I know it's got to be tiresome reiterating that quite often.

I'll second this, purely to avoid him having to repeat himself ad nauseum (especially in a rather nasty manner which may ruffle feathers) and will just help us all relax. Like, let's all be friends, or something.

  • I like the idea of us all being friends. I'll do my best to help facilitate it. I love you all. Let's move on now.
  • Journey to Silius is pretty rad, check it out OP. Can't go wrong with any Sunsoft games really
  • Good call, Sunsoft had quite a resume of great games on the NES.

A few others the OP didn't mention:

    CONTRA, FOR F***'S SAKE CONTRA

    Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

    Cobra Triangle

    TMNT 2: The Arcade Game

    Super Spike V-Ball

    Ghosts n' Goblins

    Ducktales
  • Battletoads alone should keep you busy for a few weeks. It's probably my favorite NES game.

  • SHATTERHAND!!!
  • If you're going with physical carts then start with stuff put out by the most reputable companies first like Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, Sunsoft, Hudson, Taito, Data East, etc. Anything for 1985-1989 you cant go wrong, IMO & most are still reasonably priced. There are a few stinkers in there but for the most part pretty solid. NESguide.com is an invaluable resource for keeping everything straight. I wish they had something like that for other consoles.

In fact, I might like Base Wars better! Where else can you play baseball with freaking laser swords? That's awesome you grew up with it, so you probably understand the awesomeness that is this game.

    Strong recommendations --

In my opinion these are all well worth owning and rock-solid experiences.

(I know some of these have arcade counterparts and you mentioned some of these)

(Ones marked with * are the ones I think you already mentioned)--

    =====

    1943

    Adventure of Lolo

    Air Fortress

    Alpha Mission

    Base Wars

    Baseball

    Baseball Stars

    Batman*

    Battletoads

    Bionic Commando

    Blades of Steel

    Blaster Master*

    Bubble Bobble

    Bucky O'Hare

    Castlevania 1-3*

    Contra

    Darkwing Duck

    Donkey Kong Classics

Double Dragon* (And yes, I feel it's better on NES than even the arcade, but that could be nostalgia talking)

    Dr. Mario

    Dragon Spirit

    Dragon Warrior

    Duck Hunt

    Duck Tales

    Excitebike

    Faria

    Faxanadu

    Final Fantasy

    Friday the 13th

    Galaga

    Gargoyle's Quest 2*

    Gradius

    Gun.Smoke

    Jackal

    Kid Icarus

    Kirby's Adventure

    Kung Fu

    Legend of Zelda 1-2*

    Life Force

    Maniac Mansion

    MegaMan 2-3*

    Mike Tyson's Punch-Out

    Ninja Gaiden 1-2*

    R.C. Pro-Am*

    River City Ransom

    Shadowgate

    StarTropics*

    Stinger

    Super Mario Bros. 1-3*

    Super Spyhunter

    Tecmo Super Bowl

    TMNT 2-3*

    Willow

    Wizards & Warriors

^Very strong (and advisable) list here! I would add:

    8Eyes

    Cobra Triangle

    Legendary Wings

    Little Nemo

    Monster Party
  • Id roll power pak. Itll still be cheaper in the long run.
  • I just re-skimmed the thread and I don't think anyone's mentioned Roadblasters. It's a really fun game that you can probably pick up for $5 or so. Better than Rad Racer, if you ask me. I think it likely gets passed over for being an arcade port but that seems like a rather silly way to dismiss a game that's as good as it is.

Do you play as robots in Baseball Stars? Can you fight the other robots to resolve base disputes?

    That's what I thought.
  • Overall your list is solid, but if you are really only looking for the classics, then you can avoid a lot of the hidden gem recommendations that have been given.  I would also remove Totally Rad, Basewars and Gargoyle's Quest from your list.  They are good games (Gargoyle's Quest is one of my favorites) but they aren't classics IMO.  If you start going down the path of collecting good gameplay games, your list is going to be enormous.

Other classics I think you could add:

    Contra and Super C

    Double Dragon II

Ice Hockey (maybe Blades of Steel or both)

    Kid Icarus

    Mike Tyson's Punchout

    Dragon Warrior

    Final Fantasy

    Duck Tales

    Bubble Bobble

    Tetris

    Excitebike

    Kung Fu

    Gradius (possibly Life Force)

    Bomberman

    Gauntlet

    Bionic Commando

    Super Tecmo Bowl

Probably some other sports games... I've never been a fan of them though.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head.  Like I said before, there are tons of great games for the system that I don't think of as classics, like Kickmaster, Bucky O'Hare and Monster Party (the list goes on and on).  It really depends on how deep into collecting you want to get.
  • If you got a buddy, Jackal is a killer game.

    A-MEN BROTHA!
  • I would love to recommend Kid Icarus to everyone, but it's a game that took me 3 years to learn to appreciate. You have to know a lot about the game that you're never told in order to be good at it. I'd recommend the game only if you're willing to look up how the heck you're supposed to play it before you actually play. Once you're awesome enough to unlock the best ending though, it becomes a really amazing game each time you play it.

In short, I recommend Kid Icarus if you appreciate a large learning curve in video games.

I love Kid Icarus but that game's difficulty curve is seriously backwards with the hardest levels at the beginning and easiest levels at the end. The horizontal levels (including the final boss) are a joke and the fortresses are mainly only difficult as far learning where to go and having to restart if you get eggplant cursed.
