What is the Reasonable Amount of Time to Own an Item Before Getting Bored of it?

  • That reminds me not to forget to return the hand mixer I bought yesterday...

For my games, I usually don't sell them unless I don't use it and it's worth the trouble of selling it. I always say "I have it now, it's paid, and I may use it in the future", so I keep them for a long time.

If I know I will never be using it again (like a PS1 I bought used and almost never used since I had a PS2) I'll sell it or give it away, but it would usually not happen until several months or years after I purchased it.
  • When I get to thinking about reasonable/acceptable purchases, it has more to do with the price that I can sell the item for in relation to what I bought it for than it does about how much time has passed.

With gaming items, a lot of times they rise in price so its not too unreasonable to expect that an item you bought a year ago might be worth more. If you're buying a game just to collect it, and collecting it is the main benefit you derive from it, then I would say the reasonable amount of time would be when its worth more than you paid for it. Otherwise, it was an unreasonable purchase to begin with and you probably overpaid.

If I make a random purchase, never use it or derive much benefit from it then sell it two months later, I think that was an unreasonable purchase. Those same random purchases sold a few years later, even if at a loss, don't seem as unreasonable to me. I bought a Pokemon print a few years ago for $40 and sold it in NA Auctions recently for $32, less than what I paid. But I bought it so long ago, and the point was never to profit from it, that I was glad to get anything out of it. If I had spent $40 and was immediately selling it and getting only $32 then I'd be the one who made a poor move.

Now, a modern generation game is different. If I go out and buy a 3DS and a new game to go with it and I play the shit out of it for a month or two and get great enjoyment out of whichever game I buy, if I sell the game (or even the game and the system) I'll have already derived a benefit from them equal or greater than the depreciation in their sale price.

Jone commented earlier that it wasn't so much about judging someone else for their purchases, but rather thinking a bit more about planning. Outside of gaming, I try to take that approach. With books I'm not buying any more until I've read through my current library (getting close!) - then going forward I'll be making sure to only buy it if I really want to read right then, and even that checking what the library has to offer first. I don't plan many games these days, but if I pick it back up, I'll try to proceed with the same philosophy, buying a game to play it then, and then maybe selling it whenever I'm done. At least in that instance, regardless of price paid or sold, it will have been worth it.

For the poll though, I chose 2-3 years as that's around when I plan on selling my collection.

I roll my eyes at the generally new members that pop up, want YOU to tell them what's rare/sought after, buy everything at a premium, and then end up wanting more than they paid within a year. If you collect to play, I think one day is fine. You hate a game, why would you keep it?

End thread.  If you buy it to play it and it sucks, selling it in one day is fine.  The money can be reused for games you want to play that you could actually enjoy.

    - What is the exact number of games I need to own before I am a "hardcore collector?"

    - Tell me if it is okay for me to enjoy games that are generally regarded as bad.

    - Is it okay to masturbate to Poison from Final Fight, or does that make me gay?

Lots of variables there, is the collection just nintendo or multiple consoles?

Don't forget the importance of quantifying the maximum rate of cart purchase required to not be a "speed collector"

Or the extremely important, "Do I make too much money to ever be considered a real collector?"

Damn. That is a really good one. I'd also be interested in knowing if you can collect at faster rates for less popular systems, since there is less hype and prestige associated with them. Like, if you buy 3 NES games a day, you're a speed collector, but you can get away with buying 4 Lynx titles and still be considered casual.

Are there "social media modifiers" where bragging about the purchases increase your likelihood of being a speed collector? Are silent speed collectors even speed collectors? If someone finds an Earthbound in the woods and nobody is around, and they don't start an unnecessary forum thread about it, did it really happen?

Does bragging require a certain sentence structure? Or is posting at all, bragging? AM I BRAGGING RIGHT NOW?!?!
  • Oh... oh god... I'm scared. HOLD ME.

    STOP BRAGGING!
  • I've added pieces to my collection that I will hold onto forever, regardless if I collect that long or not. There are things that I opened the package from eBay and tossed right in the trade pile, for whatever reason.

There isn't going to be a solid formula to determine how long someone should keep something.
  • Bump so I don't have to make a thread.

Some of you may know I have a 64DD console and a few games for it. It has been fun and quirky, but with Black Friday soon approaching, giving me an opportunity to pick up some more Everdrives, I've been contemplating trading off the 64DD for an Everdrive 64.

My reasoning is given how much 64DD stuff goes for, I could easily get a Everdrive 64 and still have tons of money left for things like christmas purchases. That and nearly everything 64DD-related has been ported to cartridge format. https://64dd.org/dumps_p.html

It may sound odd seeing how I haven't had the 64DD for very long, just a few months, but I bought it knowing it might be disappointing or not worth the high price tag. I also wasn't aware of the 64DD cartridge port ROMs that work on the Everdrive 64.

How long should one hold onto something before letting it go? Is a few months reasonable for consoles?

Absolutely. Once you are done enjoying it, move it on to another collector.
  • All depends on how you feel about it.

for me, I get bored of some things after just a couple days.

Less if it includes a Virtual Boy
  • If the 64DD didn't cost so much and/or wasn't worth so much, I'd be more inclined to keep it for playing. Since it's expensive, an Everdrive 64 makes more sense to me at this point.

I must be especially weird then because I'm a big fan of the Virtual Boy. It's one of my favorite Nintendo systems. No way am I parting with my VB stuff.
  • I think there isn't a "reasonable amount of time." I think as long as it's feasible to keep an item and you're still enjoying it, keep it. If there are extenuating circumstances or it's not as cool as it once was to you, get rid of it. Nothing wrong with selling something you just got.

Besides, you're a huge fan of the 64, and an everdrive for that console would make a lot of sense for you. Plus, it's a lot easier to lug around than a huge collection.
  • Whatever I want, whenever I want. The local scene especially likes to gossip about who's doing what with their games and I've never understood why. If someone wants to sell stuff they got 2 weeks ago because they want something else why should it matter to anyone else. Sometimes the fun is in acquiring an item or set.
  • Whenever you're done with it?

Assuming you're not in a space or cash crunch, it boils down to would you rather have the item, or would you rather have the money you could get out of it?

That has helped lots of stuff fly out the door on my end.

  • Actually, the cash from the 64DD would really come in handy... Yes I would say I'd rather have the money than the item, I could get something more functional AND still play those 64DD games AND a big pile of cash left over to use.

Philosoraptor, yeah you have a point there, an Everdrive 64 would be very useful to me. I could have all my N64 games on one cartridge, even expensive games, along with translations, homebrews and of course 64DD cartridge ports.
  • If we are talking gaming 1 month - 6 months should be enough time to play, beat, and max out enjoyment on most games.

Since this is collector's corner, I'd say 2-3+ years. In that time, your collection will grow and evolve. At the same time your life could change and space and/or money could be an issue. You have had more than enough time to beat and enjoy those titles, and the value likely has increased so trading/selling might be more tempting.
  • I was bored of Gargoyles Quest 2 in roughly 30 seconds.

    So very disappointing....
  • The only thing I really get rid of are doubles or when I'm doing a label upgrade. There's been a few separate single items I've sold, but it's usually after YEARS of holding onto them.

Man, I gotta lot of crap. *_*
