What's the best sub $100 you spent on this hobby?

There's a lot of money changing hands in this hobby. And if you've got enough of it, you can own just about anything.

But not everyone has thousands of dollars to throw at a collection. So I wanna know about the best 50 bucks you spent. Maybe you got an incredible deal. Or maybe you paid retail, but the game you bought gave you hours of enjoyment. Or hell, maybe you paid too much at the time but the price has since exploded and you were able to triple your money.

Here's mine. Paid 50 bones for the elusive Earthbound ruler. It's hard to put a value on these things because they come up for sale so infrequently but I feel I got a great deal. I'm not even sure if any have sold since I picked this up a couple years back.

Whats your best < $100 pickup?

  • I paid $40 CDN for Little Samson. With the other $10 I bought lunch. T'was a good day.
  • Do not have a best $50 story but i do have a best $100story, local store in 2008 had a buy two get one free and i walked out with a snes mini, about 5 snesgames,95 nes games all for a $100 plus tax. Great day minus the fact i was recovering from having the flu for the first time in my life.
  • Got a Metal Storm box and manual for about $50 in excellent condition at a flea market, then traded it for a CIB Mega Man X and Mega Man 3 to someone else I know.
  • CIB Link to the Past for $15 back in the mid 90s

    Changed everything

For something closer to $50, I'd have to think about it
  • CIB + Map of ALTTP (excellent condition) for $10 at a flea market, and also picked up Lufia 1, Soul Blazer, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors for $3 a piece at the next table, and picked up Ogre Battle SNES for $15 on the way out. This was back in 2010 or 2011, but even then those were really low prices for everything.
  • CIB blue funtastic N64 with Mario Kart.
  • $30 for 2 ps3 backwards compatible (hardware) consoles, roughly five years ago. Still have one of them now traded the other for a decent sized Sega collection and a laptop and a jtagged 360.
  • Edited the OP. Guess 50 bucks is too small a window!
  • Got a bunch of stuff from amazon around 2011 for good prices, but this just happens to add up to around $50. Both came CIB and in excellent shape. Sadly, unlike wiz, I didn't get lunch :-(

  • $20 for Balloon Fight. Cart only. Not a deal or a steal, but it's probably my favorite game for the sheer simple enjoyment. I've had better deals, but this one hits to the soul.
  • I got Metal Storm for $5 on DigitPress in 2008 before the game blew up. Not only did that turn into a great buy because of the price these days, but it instantly became one of my favorite NES games.
  • Technically the husbands story but for christas a couple years ago he snagged an incredible ebay BIN for $60 he got minty copies of Dragon Force, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Alberts Odyessy. Was a fantastic deal then and mind blowing today.

I did have a nice ebay find a couple years ago too. For $60 BIN (no photo) I bought Dragon Warrior 3 and 4. When they arrived they were in complete and excellent condition. Was essentially Buy one get one free at the time. Ended up with a spare DW3 and traded it for Ys Books 1 and 2 turbo.

Okay best sub $100 is a hard choice for me but i guess i will name as many as i can remember. Superturrican 2 $15,ninja gaiden trilogy $20,Demons crest $6,Earthbound $45, secret of evermore CIB $20, ducktales 2 $35. It is hard to pinpoint which one is my favorite but these may seem like a super big deal but this was years ago ranging from 2006-2010 (superturrican 2 being the one in 2010) eitherway i have been pretty fortunate but the times sure have changed.
  • One that sticks out was 50 bucks for Sculptors Cut from a brick and mortar store about 4 years ago. I asked for a discount...he looked it up and told me he didn't realize it had shot up and should charge me more (something like 75-100 at the time). Said I'd take it for 50 walked out and never looked back.
  • Now that you increased it to $100, I bought a Snow Brothers box and manual for just under $100 from the same guy I got the Metal Storm I mentioned above. I bought it to use as trade bait, but held on to it too long and thanks to thenickross I just completed it.

Can't keep something cool like that too long before you get attached to it and want to keep it.
  • Not a crazy deal or anything, but I love the C&L Championship Arcade Joystick for the SNES I picked up for around $75. Really makes just about every game a bit more enjoyable to play.
  • I recently spent 10 dollars on a cartridge of Wave Race for Game Boy, and not only did I discover a classic I had never played, but finishing it was actually a challenge, and it took over a week for steady attempts to complete. That to me was 10 bucks well spent. In about a week I will be buying the box/manual separately for 20 dollars.
  • $3 for a mint Bubble Bobble Part 2 NES cart in 2015...on ebay. Fun game, low price, hold the ketchup.
  • Got a pocky and rocky cart around 2011 for 30, at the time it was market value but it's gone up a fair bit since then. One of my favorite games on the snes. Also got marvel vs capcom 2 on ps2 for like 20 I think, but no manual. Oh and I really wanted Sin and Punishment for Wii, my local Walmart was selling it new for 90. For a fucking Wii game? So I passed, a couple weeks later I found it for 5 at a grocery store
  • I paid exactly $100 for a box of 135 games. There were too many gems in it to count.

    So that's like $78 for y'all 'Muricans.
  • Gun-nac for just under. The price shot up right after.
  • For sheer enjoyment, I'd have to say picking up Chrono Trigger for $56 a couple years ago. It was relatively close to retail at the time, if I remember correctly, but it became my favorite game and launched a rather large collection of Chrono Trigger items.

Other good deals include LTTP with manual and map for $24, Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen with box for $74, Lufia II for $35, Final Fantasy II for $10, Majora's Mask CIB with strategy guide for $54, and Shining Force II CIB for $32.
  • My gc component cables for $12.99 back in may
  • Sealed Conkers bad fur day for $40 a few years ago. Was Mint too.

lol ah well, there seems to be quite a few sealed Conkers out there looking at the eBay sales history.

  • I found 3 Warrior World newsletters for $5 at a garage sale in 2012. Unfortunately, I ended up selling them to acidjaguar. If I still had them, they'd be framed and hanging in my office at work. My avatar might still be the pic I snapped in the car minutes after I found them (I'll have to post to see..).
  • In 2011, I found a CIB Sculptors Cut for $45.
  • $8 wild guns @ play and trade 2 years ago.
