This is a pretty short game if you just go to the end, but I always like collecting all the treasure. This is one of those sequels that people just tend to not know about, but it's really good.
I noticed in the old thread that the Pokemon playthrough was completed in only 4 hours, and that they used the speed run route. As nice as it would be to quickly finish a long RPG for the thread, playing the games is what we're all about in this thread. So for next year's thread, I'm going to introduce a new rule that forbids game breaking glitches. Here are three big ones that come to mind.
ALL game breaking glitches in Pokemon Red/Blue not related to the unavoidably buggy battle mechanics are banned. Missingno abuse is banned, capturing Mew via glitch is banned, making Snorlax vanish without a Poke flute is banned, and any other major shortcut abuse is banned.
Using "items" from your trash can in the Final Fantasy Legend games is obviously banned due to the ridiculous unintentional stat boosts you can get from it.
Lastly, the screen warp glitch in Link's Awakening is banned for how easy it is to sequence break with it. (Not that you'd really want to skip any of this lovely game. )
Of course if some minor glitch happens that helps you out a little, don't worry about it too much. But stuff that's well documented as game breaking is forbidden. I'll make a post at the start of next year's thread about this so it's more easily seen.
Super R.C Pro AM complete! This is a pretty fun little game, though it is kind of annoying at first. It's also a tad unclear what the goal is without the manual, so I'll lay out the completion requirements right here.
In order to finish Super R.C Pro AM, you must complete races, as well as pick up the little letter blocks scattered on the courses. When you spell out "Nintendo", you upgrade to the next car. When you spell out Nintendo a second time, you upgrade to the final car. When you spell out Nintendo a third time, you complete the game. In order to collect enough letters, a minimum of 24 races must be completed.
This was actually a really fun game despite not having the most polished game engine. I also can finally add another game that starts with the letter "A" to my own completion list!
Funny thing with this game is when the 12 year old I babysit was watching me play, he was incredibly frustrated at how short and easy the levels were. The bosses are really easy too, and once I was able to fly over difficult levels with the pterodactyl, he officially declared it a baby game. XD
He's kind of right, though you do still have to be careful quite often in this game.
You know despite the Bomberman thread I recently made, Atomic Punk was a really good single player Bomberman game. It had some extra elements that made the original NES Bomberman design a lot more interesting. Towards the end I feel the game expects you to abuse the pass through fire/remote detonation combo to be basically invincible. The enemies in the final area have their own dirty trick they play, so I feel it isn't being super cheap since they can still sneak around and get ya if you aren't careful.
Dude, you're on fire. I have NOT been playing Quarth, since beating that will require a big chunk of time all at once, and I've been using those for the Game Boy modding contest on reddit.
But I HAVE been playing Kirby Star Stacker. It's perfect for short-burst play, since you have to get through 100+ levels, and there's a save battery. Became a bit of a slog toward the end, but I'd say the completion criteria is "complete Round Clear mode, all difficulties." You can't reasonably declare the game "beaten" by completing lesser difficulties. Disagree? Let's discuss!
The picture doesn't inherently prove much, but that's what showed after I beat every level. I thought this game would be faster. I've been at it for days. There's just so many levels.
Good Job dude! Thankfully I know for a fact that's the ending screen for that game, and I agree that all round clear difficulty modes should be completed. Someone just has to get the good ending in Kirby's Dream Land 2, and we will have knocked out all of the Kirby games!
Also that game gets pretty tough near the end, so good jorb!
In general to the thread, you may have noticed the original post is being worked on a bit to be a bit tidier, and to fully update the list. I am currently making sure the point totals are all correct, I'm re-counting the total games completed, and I'm going to remove unlicensed games from the list. I also am thinking of adding a nice banner at the top of the first post for presentation purposes.
Also the time is now! I'm compiling a completion requirements list, so if you have completed any games with unclear end points, post a list of them, and what the ending was. I'll try and go back through the previous threads and look, but any other additions would be great to know.
As for myself, I have ordered a few new games that should arrive next week, so for now I'm going to play through Final Fantasy Adventure for the first time. Games I've ordered for next week include Sneaky Snakes, Skate or Die: Bad 'n' Rad, Battletoads, (for the thread) and Pokemon Red, Double Dragon II, and Gargoyle's Quest (for fun)
I did notice some changes to the thread. It will be nice to have a good list of completion criteria like the NES and SNES threads. I have a good number of Game Boy games, but tbh I haven't beaten very many of them. I discovered NA and this thread just a few months ago, so I won't have a whole lot of completion requirements up front, but I'm willing to put in the hard research to fill the list in. We can also check longplays on YouTube to fill in the gaps, Brock Landers style. It's a bit of a shame to see titles like the King James Bible fall off the list, because it would be hilarious to list the requirement as "read the entire bible."
On that topic, I read that Game & Watch Gallery shows that first "ending" when you get 5 stars (1000 points) on any 4 games. In theory, that means you could see that ending by getting 1000 points on easy and hard modes of the modern and classic version of just one game, leaving the other 3 games completely untouched, and earning just 20 stars. I don't think that's super likely to happen, and I don't know if I have a problem with that, but to my knowledge, the requirement should be something like "first ending (get 1000 points in any 4 game modes)"
My next few games will probably be Tetris 2, a couple of the Jeopardy games(so so bad), and possibly Elevator Action. I should just dive in and pick some games from my collection that I've hardly touched, and commit to beating them.
The thread is now fully updated, and everything is accurate. I cleaned things up too and hopefully made it all a little easier to read.
It's worth pointing out that we've already succeeded in crushing last year's completion record, so let's keep it going and see how much we can totally decimate it!
King James Bible Completion Requirements: Accept Christ as your Lord and Savior ~R.I.P Unlicenced GB Games
King James Bible Completion Requirements: Accept Christ as your Lord and Savior ~R.I.P Unlicenced GB Games
Ha! But for the record, to beat the game you have to play some ridiculous number of consecutive games of Concentration. I did it once and it took me six hours.
That said I have no problem with dropping the unlicensed games; better to have a more modest target until the target is actually reached.
I finally paid some attention to some GB games I haven't played thru yet. I beat Darkwing Duck which wasn't hard. Its practically the same exact port as the NES version.
BTW I beat Operation C and Belmonts Revenge and CHRIST were they HARD!! Belmonts revenge is so deceptive! It started out easy, but after I got to Dracs castle, the 2nd final boss was nearly impossible and Dracula himself needed a TON of memorization. BRUTAL.
I dont think I have any more games that I haven't beat that are left on this list that I know I can take down so theres a good chance ill be done for the rest of the year.
Good job! Game show video games are a lot more fun with multiplayer unfortunately.
I had an unexpected surprise at our local game store, and they finally got a copy of Milon's Secret Castle for Game Boy! I'm working on knocking that one out, and it's actually a lot of fun. It's significantly easier than the NES version as it gives you a password feature, and the bosses are less difficult. The only real drawbacks are the lack of colour, and for some reason there's an insane amount of slowdown. There's really no excuse for that in a 1993 Game Boy release by a big company like Hudson.
Oh well. : /
EDIT: Milon's Secret Castle complete!
This was a really fun game. I can't imagine myself ever playing the NES version that doesn't have unlimited continues and a password feature. You kind of get used to the slowdown after a while, but it would have been nice to play the game at a stable framerate. I'm usually not a stickler for that kind of stuff, so it has to be pretty extreme for me to notice.
For others who may be interested in buying this game, I had a bitch of a time finding a nice copy that people weren't gouging for. I ended up getting a lovely copy for 20 bucks, and I'm very happy about that. I don't imagine a Game Boy port of Milon's Secret Castle selling too well when it's competing against Link's Awakening. XD
Nice, you finished it! I picked up a copy of Milon a few months ago, and I played it for an hour or so before deciding that everyone is right about how obtuse that game is. "Find a saw." ??? Glad you figured everything out.
I finished Jeopardy, just the normal, plain ol' Jeopardy. It's actually less buggy than Teen Tournament, so this was a much better experience. For whatever reason, this one doesn't wait for input on the victory screen, so as I was pulling my phone out for a picture, it reset to the title screen. So no picture.
I don't have the other Jeopardy games yet, but I may emulate them for easy points, since I'm getting pretty good at the horrible text-entry system. Or I might play Hatris. Hmmm.

The most confusing puzzle is on the first floor where you're trying to find the first shop. After that it's much easier. It helped that I had already played an NES game called "Mystery Quest" which is very similar.
Also, I had that Jeopordy game as a kid. It's one of the only games I owned as a kid that I've never made an effort to buy again. XD
As for me, Bonk's Adventure Complete!
This was a really great Game Boy game! Just when I always think I've already played all the best stuff on the system, something like this sneaks up on me. I had never really thought much of Hudson before, but after playing Atomic Punk, Adventure Island, Milon's Secret Castle, and Bonk's Adventure on Game Boy the past week or so, I have more respect for them than I used to. Granted most of their Game Boy ports were clearly outsourced to other companies, and not a single one of them could figure out how to deal with slowdow on the Game Boy. Atomic Punk ran pretty smoothly, Bonk's Adventure was mostly smooth, Adventure Island had some significant slowdown, and Milon's Secret Castle was slowdown city. Adventure Island II on Game Boy has no slowdown at all, though the game is way harder because of it. XD (Also bullshit enemy placement)
If you haven't played Bonk's Adventure on Game Boy before, I really recommend it.
Awesome, is that the one with the weird 1-on-1 duels? Or am I thinking of Bonk's Revenge? Or both?
I went ahead and emulated Jeopardy Platinum and Jeopardy Sports. I know it's dumb to show pictures of me winning, since the 4 Jeopardy games are basically identical outside of the title screen and question pool, but I took screenshots anyway.
Oh, and there's an extremely annoying bug in 3 of the 4 games: At the title screen, the iconic Jeopardy music plays, in mediocre 2-part 8-bit harmony. After the first run-through of the theme song, it modulates up for another go. BUT, one of the two parts goes up by a WHOLE step, and the other by a HALF step. It sounds AWFUL. And then it happens AGAIN for a THIRD go, which sounds even WORSE. Then it resets at the original key, both parts normal. As a music person, I'll be playing these games silently next year. Except for the vanilla Jeopardy, for some reason.
For anyone interested in these games, go ahead and skip the entire first round. Pick questions until the CPU answers correctly, then put your Game Boy down until Double Jeopardy. When you pick it up again, the CPU will only have a few hundred bucks, and may even be negative by a few hundred. Then the CPU magically gets a little smarter.
And try not to wager anything for Final Jeopardy. In one of the run-throughs, I had enough $$ to wager $0 and guarantee the win. So I wagered $0. The category was literally "OAR" and the answer was literally "OAR." What was the question? "Who is Blanche DuBois." Dodged THAT bullet. I won't go into losing all my money on a Daily Double or how some of the questions have typos in them. I'm just going to put these away till next year.
We're doing great so far! We have now beaten as many Game Boy games as there are original Pokemon! (Excluding Mew)
I thought I'd post a little list here to motivate some of the players in the thread. Here are some games I completed for the thread in previous years that I have not gotten around to yet since I no longer own the cartridges. I'll put a little descriptor next to them and you can see if you want to try and knock them out!
Amazing Penguin: Pretty challenging game, but a lot of fun once you figure out what's going on. Black spots can be kicked at enemies with the A button, and destroying a spot with a minus sign on it makes the enemies go the opposite direction. Very useful to know.
Battle Bull: Pretty rad game that starts off difficult, but becomes much easier once you can get some weapons. It will require a fair bit of skill and strategy with your upgrades to make it to that point, so don't be afraid to start the game from the beginning if things don't go well early on.
Boomer's Adventure in Asmik World: A pretty unique game, though it can be very difficult. A strict password feature, slow movement speed, and the potential for things to get unpredictable make this a pretty tough game. I recommend looking at the GameFAQs guide to see where the keys are buried to save yourself a ton of frustration. Also keep in mind that you can catch the boomerangs you throw, which makes bosses a lot easier. You can only use the same boomerang three times though. Once you climb the tower, you have to climb back down the tower, which means doing all the levels again in reverse.
Casper: I beat this game, and it's probably the worst thing I've ever played and actually finished.
Castlevania Legends: I forget exactly how you get the full ending in this game, but I seem to remember there are special hidden items in every stage that you have to collect in order to see the true ending. I'll look up a guide at some point and remind myself what to do.
Final Fantasy Legend II: One of the best games on the Game Boy, but also the hardest RPG I've ever played. The endgame is really brutal, so be super prepared. Also keep in mind that you have to lose a battle by having your party get knocked out at some point as part of the plot.
Fish Dude: There are two loops of Fish Dude, so this takes a little while to finish. This is a bazillion times easier than the Japanese version which I've also beaten, so you can die as much as you like in a level without worrying about your Fish total resetting. A cute little game that's worth playing once or twice.
Game of Harmony: This is a fairly sloppy port of a PC puzzle game, and it can be very unforgiving. That being said, I had a pretty good time with it despite having to start the entire game over several times before I could beat it. Precision and clever strategies help out here.
Go! Go! Tank: A pretty simple game that can at times get on your nerves with it's "always moving" mechanics. Not a tough one to knock out.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: This is a really great game with stellar music that I would have knocked out already if I still had a cartridge of it. The game needs to be played on the "Hard" difficulty setting in order to get the real ending, but it's barely any different from the Normal mode. Doing well on the end of level bonus rounds increases your maximum health, so try your best on those. Other than that, have fun with a great game.
Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise: An arcade style game that loops after stage 8. Really easy one to knock off the list.
Revenge of the Gator: The best pinball game on the system. Beat the top score to complete the game. (Which can actually be a little tricky for once)
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: If you ever played the NES game, it's basically the same as this, except this version is way easier. Put in a fresh pair of batteries for this game as it's stupidly long with no passwords. I'm never playing it again.
Rolan's Curse: A really short and easy game in a similar style to Arkista's Ring on NES. Not really noteworthy aside from a few good tunes, and that it's an easy one to finish.
Simpsons: Bart & the Beanstalk: A Simpsons game that's actually pretty decent, though is very loosely connected to the simpsons. It's pretty difficult, so expect to restart the game several times before you can finish it.
Tail 'Gator: A really awesome game that's unfortunately really expensive now only because a CIB copy listing was added to the "loose" list on pricecharting.com. I reported it and got it taken off, but the damage was already done and now it has a false inflated value. Just emulate it kids. It's a really awesome game, so have fun knocking it off the list!
Tetris 2: A fun puzzle game that's a mix between Tetris and Dr. Mario.
Titus the Fox: This game is difficult, confusing, AND it sucks on top of that. Take one for the team if you want.
Despite being way more polished than the first game, this game is way worse than the first one due to cheap level design, and overly slippery control. This game's approach to difficulty is to put in shit that zips at you off screen, or to just put stuff in such a way that you're really likely to get smacked by it the first time. Adventure Island 1 may have been fairly easy, but at least it played fair. (Most of the time)
I'll certainly play the first one again next year, but this one was a little too stressful for me. It's still a really great Game Boy game, so if you can handle some groan inducing deaths, I say give it a whirl.

This drives me nuts! The game is pretty rare, but a couple of idiots bought a couple loose for $100... now the price has been going down (30's) but every idiot lists their copy as gold. Just can't get it for cheap and I see the same listings all the time at the same price, never trying to go down.

One of the original 19 NES games my older brothers and I had as kids was Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, and it's one of only a handful of our original games I've never played or even looked at since I was about 6 years old. Playing the Game Boy version was such an amazingly nostalgic and fun experience. I'm not sure if I'll tackle the sequel, but this was the most fun I've had playing a Game Boy game since Metroid II brought me back to the system. If you've never played Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, it's a great game that I 100% recommend.
Very easy once you know what to do, but the process of getting there can be infuriating. Still, it only took a hair over two hours to figure it out, and the game itself can be beaten in 15 minutes.
I played Wordtris for a while and accomplished the following things:
- Cleared Level I on the highest difficulty, reaching Level J;
- Started a game on Level J at the highest difficulty, and was able to get the magic word multiple times in a single game;
- Played Level J for a while, got a few long words and a high score, and then got the smiling bear animation when my game was over.
I'm not sure what else one can do in this game, and the manual says Level J is endless, so I guess it's done?
IIRC the SNES version actually "loops" Level J -- the level stops at a certain point, fades to black, then repeats -- but this one just keeps going continuously.

I'll mark it as completed for now. Keep in mind we always have an option to consider a game "unwinnable" on the list, which may end up happening with some of these Tetris games. It's a game I'll tuck away in my mind as something I have to play and determine a goal for.
As for myself, I've pretty much blown my gaming budget for the next while, so I won't be buying new games for about a month. That gives me time to finish a few things for the thread, and for my own completion list. Believe it or not I'm still slowly working on Catrap. I took a long break from it, but I picked it back up today and broke past the puzzle I was stuck on, and a few others after it! I'm now at the 86th puzzle out of 100. Not much farther to go!
Catrap is really fun -- I spent a Christmas break playing (and beating) it once. BTW there are passwords for three additional puzzles in the manual, but I don't think we should require those.
As for Wordtris, if we deem it winnable, I'd say the standard could either be clearing Level I, or getting the Magic Word at least once on Level J. Either of those are clear events that could work.
I've beaten this game twice now, and the second time through was a lot less stressful than the first time. It's still really difficult, but I can see myself playing it once in a while. It's a really polished game, so give it a try! Just keep in mind that you WILL get angry playing this.
For the record, this is a spiritual sequel to Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, so it's at least somewhat noteworthy even if you've never heard of it. Easily Rare's most polished game on Game Boy.
After the first four stages, you get a little fireworks celebration. in levels 5-8, there are two Qix enemies chasing you around, and if you make it through those levels, you get another fireworks display, and the game takes it back down to one Qix. At this point you now have to cover 80% of the screen instead of 75%. This is essentially the game looping, so completing stage 8 in Qix should be fine for the completion requirements.
Very easy once you know what to do, but the process of getting there can be infuriating. Still, it only took a hair over two hours to figure it out, and the game itself can be beaten in 15 minutes.
Just like the NES version! I remember getting to the level with all the platforming and lights, somewhere WAY towards the end.
This game and I had unfinished business from the last time I had a bunch of GB cartridges, so I'm happy to finally finish it and mark it off both the GB thread list, and my own personal completion list. It's a pretty hard video game, so I feel pretty proud of myself to have had the patience to finish it. Course I got about 70 Game Overs in the process, but it's good enough for me. XD

Nice, you finished it! I picked up a copy of Milon a few months ago, and I played it for an hour or so before deciding that everyone is right about how obtuse that game is. "Find a saw." ??? Glad you figured everything out.
Let's try and knock some of these off!
I'm making progress in Elevator Action, but I haven't bested it yet. I'm digging it more than I thought I would.

This drives me nuts! The game is pretty rare, but a couple of idiots bought a couple loose for $100... now the price has been going down (30's) but every idiot lists their copy as gold. Just can't get it for cheap and I see the same listings all the time at the same price, never trying to go down.

Damn....makes me glad I got it for $22 in 2014!
- Cleared Level I on the highest difficulty, reaching Level J;
- Started a game on Level J at the highest difficulty, and was able to get the magic word multiple times in a single game;
I played Wordtris for a while and accomplished the following things:
- Cleared Level I on the highest difficulty, reaching Level J;
- Started a game on Level J at the highest difficulty, and was able to get the magic word multiple times in a single game;
- Played Level J for a while, got a few long words and a high score, and then got the smiling bear animation when my game was over.

XD
