  • World Heroes 2 Jet was beaten on hard with Rasputin.

This' a damn great port by Takara.
  • Burai Fighter Deluxe Complete!

    Blades of Steel Complete!

I was unsure if Burai Fighter Deluxe should be completed on ultimate for it to count, but it's so similar to the hard mode that I think we can just keep in at the Ace difficulty. It's an okay game, but nothing spectacular.

Blades of Steel on the other hand is a really great game, though it's fairly chaotic. I completed the Tournament mode on the normal difficulty, and that unlocked the end credits, so I think that can be our requirement. It's the first sports game that I played the tournament mode in, and actually beat the game! I honestly just don't like sports games very much since I have next to no interest in them. I liked how arcadey this game was, and you didn't have to worry about benching people or player stats. I know sports fans enjoy that stuff, but it's what kills most sports games for me. Black Box NES Soccer is my favourite sports game.
  • Just finished WWF Superstars with the Macho King. Love that little game. I'll be working on Superstars 2 tonight most likely.
  • I got a bunch more GB games so I can add more.

I finished Fish Dude. It was fun but a little confusing at first. I got the hang of it.
  • Just beat WWF Superstars 2 with The Undertaker. Not as good as the first one, but still pretty good. Working on some other GB games.
  • Well since I had a hankering for more GB stuff I also beat Tail Gator. Nice long but simple and (mostly) easy game. Pretty fun!

Did you finish the second loop? It's not super obvious that there is one at first. The game is pretty much the same the second time around, so we may end up just saying one loop is fine. It's always odd to me that the NES thread doesn't require both loops of Zelda or Bubble Bobble despite them being quite different, yet they require all four loops of games like Arkista's Ring, Commando, and Mystery Quest which are the EXACT same each loop.

By the way, I've beaten the Japanese version of this game as well as the US version, and it's WAY more strict in Japan. O_o In the Japanese version, the amount of fish you've eaten gets reset each time you die. You have to get every fish in the level in one go. It's a lot more strategic when you have to keep the big fish on-screen at all times so he doesn't warp away, but also be in such a position where you can manipulate him to be out of your way. It's pretty interesting to play.

  • I'm on a roll today. I beat Batman the video game. I must say, it was the first time completing it and I loved it! Especially the side scrolling shmup with the Batwing! Trying to finish off Battletoads. We will see about that one. ^>^

I've been anxious to get a copy of Battletoads and try to beat it. I had ordered a copy at a great price, but they canceled since they didn't actually have it. I was pretty disappointed. Haven't been willing to pull the trigger on copies over 20 dollars. Hopefully you can knock it off the list for me.

I did do both.  In fact, I didnt notice anything different at all except the last level you need 5 big fish instead of 3.

Im working on Bubble Bobble 2 now.  And for the NES threads, its because its not that important.  You're not playing anything 'new' that isnt in the game before and the ending isnt any different.  Where as Isolated Warrior, to get the real last ending you need to not continue or you cant play level 7, and get the real ending.  Im sure one loop would be fine anyway for Fish Dude.

Who knows.  I think they bent the rules a bit for certain games.

I would say pull the trigger if you find one for a cheaper price Peko. It really is a good portable game. While I enjoy the NES version of Battletoads, I find myself liking the Gameboy version much more. It's a difficult game but, it doesn't seem right down mean like its older brother. Slowly chipping away at it. I can consistantly get to the second last stage before I run out of continues. Stay tunes. lol.

  • Elevator Action complete!

Despite what you might initially think, the Game Boy version of Elevator Action does in fact have an ending. It's kind of like Donkey Kong Jr. or Popeye where you complete some stages, rescue a lady, (or daddy) and then the game loops. This is all new for the Game Boy version. In fact, one can hardly call this game a port since it's essentially an entirely new game. The initial level layout of the arcade game is present only in the first stage, and then the next five levels are new layouts. There are also a number of improvements such as new enemies, a new health bar that gives you four hearts, you're able to jump across elevator shafts freely, you can enter special doors to give you new weapons, and best of all, you can jump down an entire floor without getting killed. The game is a smoother and way more fun experience this way, and the game makes up for all these conveniences by making the level layouts trickier.

At the end of stage 5, you are about to get in your car (which in this version has a getaway driver) when a mob guy takes your car and girl away! In the final stage you have to climb UP the building, and find your way to the darker shaded door which has your girl in it. You have to make use of ventilation shafts (or maybe they're laundry chutes??) to get to the correct door. Once you enter you are attacked by a swarm of enemies. When you defeat them all, you rescue your driver, and you win the game's loop. It then starts over with slighter harder requirements in each stage.

While I had trouble with this initially, I ended up really enjoying it! It's always nice to see a developer take an old game and update it, and it feels nice that they chose to do it on the Game Boy.   If you're a fan of the arcade game, you'll most certainly want to give this a whirl. I'd also just recommend it in general since it was really good.
  • Battletoads Finished!

Hoo-boy, that was a fight to the finish. So I've been at the game for a bit and last night I thought I had the game beat. Went through the second last level (whirling blades of death) and managed to squeak by with one continue left. I get to the jet pack stage and am down to my last three men...but, i finish the level. So now I face the end boss (Robo-Manus) and I'm down to my last life with only his face left to smash in.

Needless to say I failed! With ONE HIT LEFT I choke and get killed!

I almost chuck my GBA SP across the room.

Fast forward to today. Get down to my last continue. But this time I was heading into the Robo-Manus rematch. I'm gripping the SP extremely hard at this point, but I managed to defeat him and take a crappy picture. Great game though. If you wanted to love the NES version of Battletoads but its just too damn rough for you, pick up the GB version. Toad-aly   different and while difficult is way more easier to manage!

I'm going to try and get endings to both Batman: Return of the Joker (on hard mode no doubt to get the best ending). And I have the Japanese version of Heavyweight Championship Boxing. Peko, would it be alright if I beat the Japanese version of the game since I don't own the North American version?

Good job beating Battletoads! I was able to tolerate the NES game until I could consistantly get to stage 9, and then after the 8 billionth game over I decided it wasn't worth my time trying to finish it. Glad to hear the Game Boy version is easier. I know there's a trick to easily get past the boulder level, but I'm not going to abuse it. I want the true Battletoads punishment.

As for the boxing game, I couldn't find any significant differences between the two versions, so I say go for it. Though in general it would be best if we stick to north american copies as much as we can, since there are some cases of the Japanese and pal versions of games having slight difficulty tweaks. (and it means less work for me if I don't have to look up the two versions in videos.   ) No worries in this case though, so good luck with the game! I hear it's pretty confusing, so you may want to see if you can find the controls and mechanics online in an FAQ or something.

Also don't feel bad about the last hit choke. If I knew how many times I choked right at the finish line over the course of the 76 GB and 40+ NES games I've beaten, I think I'd be really upset. XD You kind of just learn to expect it after a while, and it makes the times you don't choke that much more of a relief.
  • I didnt realize it was beat but since I bought it I ended up beating Bubble Bobble 2. It was annoying because I wanted to point out theres no information about how to get the big diamonds to get the good ending. I still dont get it 100% but apparently on certain levels if you defeat the enemies fast enough, you'll get a small crystal thing, which will drop a big crystal so when you beat the boss you'll get a key. Get 3 keys in each level and you get the good ending. The keys will save, but if you get a big crystal I dont think it saves it in the password, but if you die and continue it remembers it.
  • Since the new year is not that far away, I've been thinking about next year's thread a fair bit lately and how we could improve it. There's been a game on this list that's been driving me crazy about how to consider it "beaten", and that game is "Yoshi". No matter how you slice it, the game simply has no ending.

So here's what I've been considering. For games such as Yoshi and Revenge of the Gator that have a high scores table, but no real ending, we could have a year long Top Scores competition. Throughout the year people compete for the highest scores in the thread, and the list of games in this category will be updated with the top player as new scores get posted. December 1st would be the cut-off date, and the scores would be finalized at that point. Whoever has the high score in a game by the end of the contest gets credit for that game's completion, and the respective points for the main completion tally. This would add a bit of a last minute Mario Party-esque score scrambling right towards the end, but still give people a whole month to try and scale back up in the rankings if they had been neglecting the top scores contest.

I would have had to sort through all the games for endings eventually, so this would be a way to get myself motivated to do it. If you think it sounds fun, we could give it a try. If you think it's over complicating matters, let me know. I think it would be a fun idea to try at least once, so I hope you'll consider it.
  • Add Mr Do! to that list too. It only has 10 levels and a high score. So when I beat it, it'll be because I went thru all 10 levels and got the high score. I got all 10 levels but only came in 3rd.
  • That sounds good to me Peko. It would keep things fun on those high score only games.

    Heavyweight Championship Boxing complete!

Probably the best boxing game on the handheld. It's actually quite fun! Although the game is quite short at 6 bouts, you can customized your fighter a bit (increasing or decreasing your power, speed, or stamina). There's quite a bit of punches and dodges you can perform as well as high and low blocking. I had trouble in bouts 5 and 6 my first go around. Lost all my

rematches (you only get 3) on the last boxer (a knock off of Apollo Creed! lol).

Restarted from the beginning and claimed the undisputed world title on my secon try. Now...back to Return of the Joker full on.
  • QUARTH COMPLETE! : D

I think I've found a new game to add to the list of absurdly hard Game Boy games. Final Fantasy Legend II, Wave Race, and Quarth. All extremely difficult, but really good games.

In order to get the end credits in Quarth, you must beat stage 3-9, and then do 18 extra stages that are all very hard. (As established earlier in the thread) I started from stage 1-1, so this game took an absurdly long time to beat. The final stages of each group of nine are extremely hard, and require a ton of practice and Game Overs. Thankfully the game lets you start at the last stage you died at, otherwise this would be completely impossible. Like a lot of Konami's Game Boy games, it expects absolute mastery of the level before you're capable of finishing it, and there are a couple parts I swear are completely impossible unless you have a power-up. I've very happy to have crossed this off the list, as I doubt I'll ever play the game to its ending ever again. I will probably play it more casually from this point on.
  • Whoa, you beat Quarth? My hats off to you sir! Good game, but not one even I would try to complete. ^>^
  • Good job on Quarth, I wasn't sure I was ever going to beat it. Sorry I've disappeared. I still make stabs at Elevator Action from time to time. I've never gotten past stage 1-5, but I'm getting slowly better. I don't know how far the game goes.

I like the idea for endless games. We should put together a list before the year ends. I love me some Yoshi. The NES thread says that it's beaten after Yoshi eats a pineapple after something like 16 Game B stages. I haven't tried to get that far to confirm it on GB.
  • Batman Return of the Joker finished!

Man was I rusty on this game. I've had it since I was a kid and it took me a number of days to even get to the Joker. This one is a solid game, maybe not as polished gameplay wise but in terms of graphics and music - totally excellent! Now off to Battle Arena Toshinden and some other games.

  • Battle Arena Toshinden finished!

On a roll today. A nice little fighter on the handheld. Beat the game on my first go with Eiji.

There's one stage after stage 1-5 where you climb up the building. I won't spoil why. I already finished that game for the thread too.   I didn't mean to steal them away from you or anything, I just had them in my collection and hadn't played them yet. : (

As for me, I'm working on finishing up some puzzle games for the thread, and for my own completion victories. I have six levels left in Catrap, about seven in Kwirk, and about 52 in Stop That Roach. As great as Catrap has been, I'll be happy to see the end of it. It really has too many levels for its own good.

I had no idea it would be so hard. XD I've been aiming to finish all of the games on Game Boy published by Ultra Games, and now I just have Motocross Maniacs, Ultra Golf, and World Circuit Series left.

  • What constitutes completion of a game like Baseball? Just play through a single game or...?

EDIT: I also just beat Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly. Just look at this wonderful reward that I got for playing this WONDERFUL game! I'm so happy!

    image
  • Well it took about 3 months, but I finally finished Catrap!

This is a good puzzle game, but the puzzles were just a tad too convoluted for my tastes. I'm really happy to see the end of it, and I'll probably never play it again even though it was good. Still working on Kwirk and Stop That Roach.

Also I'm really sorry to the thread in general, as I've noticed I only ever update the thread when I finish a game. I'll mark the last game completed as Escape from Camp Deadly.

Also, sweet mod there Jono!   Beating one game of Baseball sounds fine for "Baseball".
  • Yeah, one game of Baseball -- with either team -- seems to be all there is to Baseball.

Congrats on the Catrap win! That was a fun one for me as well. If you ever miss it, there are three passwords in the manual for extra puzzles (input through the game's "construction set"-type option, IIRC).

BTW I seem to have disappeared from the leaderboard...?

Whoops! I must have accidentally highlighted two names while rearranging the order. I'll fix that up. Sorry bout that.

  • I beat Pugsleys Scavenger Hunt. Wasnt too hard as its a shortened version, albeit exact version of the NES version.
