  • I got a whole new slew of GB stuff but I dunno how many ill finish. Ive been working on Cool Ball (40 levels in) and honestly I really like it! I dunno why but I do. Its simple and fun.
  • Finally finished Cool Ball. I was doing about 10-20 levels at a sitting. I really enjoyed it! Its a very simple but not too complicated puzzle game. Controls could be a bit weird but I enjoyed it for what it was. A simple and fun game.
  • The top score contest doesn't seem to be going over too well, so I think I'm going to call them off. There aren't as many games that are suitable for it as I thought there would be, and I've since come up with decent completion goals for all of the games I was unsure about. I'll remove them from the thread, and update the completion requirements for Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Revenge of the Gator, and Yoshi.
  • Don't think you're getting rid of me that easily guitarzombie!   Dig Dug Complete!

I know I keep mentioning it, but almost ALL of the classic arcade games got enhanced updates on Game Boy, and Dig Dug is no exception. One key difference in that unlike BurgerTime Deluxe, Q*Bert For Game Boy, and Donkey Kong, you still have the option to play the traditional arcade version of Dig Dug. The update comes in the form of the alternate mode, "New Dig Dug", which is actually really damn good.

You won't find this information ANYWHERE online, so I'll tell you from figuring out on my own that there are 40 stages of New Dig Dug, and four boss fights. The game does have a proper ending at that point, which has some really great animated GIF material for Dig Dug fans. I'm really happy to have beaten this game, and it puts me one step closer to 100 GB victories.
  • for international super star soccer, are you referring to ISS '99?

Nope. That's the Game Boy colour game. There was a separate Game Boy game with no number after the title.

Also in general to the thread, I apparently forgot to cross off and give myself the point for BurgerTime Deluxe, so that puts me back in the lead. I'll check the point total and game completion total again a little later to make sure I didn't forget anything else.

Ive already beat about 15 to 20 other games, but they were already beaten so I cant include them  .

I got plenty more down the pike to try out before the year is over.

I don't ACTUALLY  care about the leaderboards to be honest. XD I'm more concerned about my own personal completion total for the system as a whole. I have a number of games I've beaten before that I could play again for the thread, but my own list and backlog takes priority. (Plus some of those games I never want to play again)

Speaking of which, Donkey Kong Land 3 complete!

I gotta say that after you've gotten used to old games not having a bunch of bullshit collectables, it REALLY sucks going back to those types of games. In order to play the last world and ultimate final boss, you have to get all the bonus coins, DK coins, and stopwatches. This takes what would have been a fun fast paced platformer and turns it into a scavenger hunt as you tip-toe through levels trying to find everything. It really ruins the whole experience that they FORCE you to get them for the secret final boss.

I think for now, we can set the completion goal for this game to simply finish the game, and ignore the lost world and time trials. There aren't any alternate credits when you get 103%, so I think in this case it's fine to just call it over and the end credits. I'll update the completion requirements with this info.

  • Finished Mickey's Ultimate Challenge on all three difficulties:

It may be a kids' game (and is generally very easy), but the final sliding block puzzle on Hard is a real hassle!
  • Just cleared Casper on Medium difflculty, so that's done.
  • Wanted to get in on this thread and thought maybe would be a good place to ask , I made a WTB thread for copies of NBA all star challenge 1 & 2 , Maybe some of the gameboy players might have extra copies laying around. drop me a PM if you have 1 or both up for sale
  • And now I've completed Double Dribble: 5 on 5, winning with Chicago over Portland, 59-45, on Level 1 difficulty (which suffices for our purposes). Got a nice fireworks show and a screen that says "VICTORY".

EDIT: Heh, TWarwick07, I didn't see your post when I made mine. A sudden basketball theme appears! Too bad I don't have either of those games.

EDIT #2: Went back and beat Level 2 on Double Dribble, winning 64-53 with the same teams, and got a picture this time:

  • And next it's Heiankyo Alien, beaten. Always a fun one.
  • With bronzeshield's extra push, the thread has completed 200 Game Boy games in total!!!

We totally clobbered the record this year, and I was really hoping we'd make it over 200, so I'm really happy we could all manage to push it forward to make it this far.

Though the year is not over yet, so let's try and pad our numbers as much as we can! At the very least let's knock out the two Rolan's Curse games since they're so short and easy. There are mostly a lot of lower quality games left, so I know the list isn't too appealing at this point.

To pad our numbers a bit, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-man are complete! The completion requirements are to play enough stages to view all three intermissions.
  • Hey, no reason not to try for 251 and 50%, right?

Meanwhile I just beat True Lies. No picture, I'm afraid -- even if I had my camera handy, the final cutscenes go by very quickly.

The game has a weird quirk: it has valid passwords for Levels 2 & 4 (of six total), but it doesn't give them to you for some reason. When I beat True Lies back in 2010 I found those passwords on the Internet and used them -- since it irritated me to have to play two full levels at a time when there were perfectly decent passwords to be had -- but this time around I only used the passwords the game gave me (for Levels 3 & 5). The levels are long, but with a little persistence and luck it was doable, and it's a pretty decent little game besides.

BTW the final boss has a "safe zone" off to the left. If you shoot him from there, his grenades won't reach you, and you can pick him off at your leisure.
  • I tried Battletoads Double Dragon again, but the gameplay is just too loose, and the controls too shitty. I can sleepwalk through the console version, but the GB one is too painful. I could get past level 5 if I could tighten up in 4 and 5, but it just takes too long to get there and practice and it ain't worth it

It would be a struggle, but if we all pushed for it there's a potential to get to 251. Still, with only a little over a month to go and only a few active participants, we'd have to play almost non-stop to make it. XD

Tht being said, there are still some decent/easy ones still remaining. I'll post another list of potential completions to encourage people to play some more.

Donkey Kong Land 2: At least for now, we can consider just finishing the game good enough, and worry about the bonus games/lost world for next year.

Kirby's Dream Land 2: Considering obtaining the rainbow drops in each world isn't much extra work, and you don't fight the two final bosses without them, I still feel the good ending should be required for this game. One of the better games still on the list!

Go! Go! Tank: A decent game that doesn't take too long to finish.

Amazing Penguin: A fun maze/chase 'em up game that's kind of long and difficult, but worth finishing at least once if you're a GB fan.

Kwirk: A GB classic puzzle game. It's pretty difficult, but only has 30 stages, the first ten of which are really easy.

Battletoads Double Dragon: A good handheld port of the bizarre crossover. Not the best GB Battletoads game, but by far the easiest one.

Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2: A fairly short game if you can handle how lame and easy it is compared to the first one.

Final Fantasy Legend II: One of the damn finest games on the Game Boy, but also extremely difficult. It's worth playing through, but look up how the mechanics work online before you play.

Maru's Mission: A cute little ninja game.

Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise: A simple little top score arcadey game that loops after stage 8. Complete stage 8 to consider the game finished.

Ninja Taro: Another cute Ninja game.

Prince of Persia: A good port of the original classic

Q*Bert for Game Boy: An update to the original arcade game. If you fancy yourself a Q*Bert wizard, you'll want to give this a shot.

Rolan's Curse: A really short and easy game. It would be kind of silly if this one didn't get finished by the end of the year.

Solomon's Club: A much more fun and forgiving version of Solomon's Key for NES.

Track & Field: Another entry from Konami's button mashing series. Earn enough points in the events to get 1st place!

Coure you can play whatever you feel like, so these are just some suggestions if you're having trouble picking from the list.

  • I just beat Spuds Adventure. Great fun game but wow I was surprised how tough it was! Has a lot of replayability with different paths, shooting elements, rpg and puzzle solving. Nothing really that hard but mostly its keeping a strong weapon for the boss fight especially towards the end! Last boss fight took quite a while to get a rhythm going. But I really enjoyed it and happy to have it!
  • Somebody help me! I've discovered Harvest Moon and can't stop playing it! T_T

Not sure what the requirements are for having a good enough farm to finish the game, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Also congrats to guitairzombie for getting a copy of Spud's Adventure! Hope you didn't pay a lot for it, since the two rare potato games still pop up on the cheap often enough to not justify the inflated "ZOMGRARE" prices.   My approach lately has been to get all the GB games based on big franchises out of the way, and anything else is just an extra bonus. I was finally able to track down a copy of Adventures of Lolo for Game Boy, which was basically the hardest thing I still had to get. With Harvest Moon and R-Type obtained, I just need Blaster Master Boy, Blades of Steel, Frogger, Street Fighter II, and Mortal Kombat.

    Keep on pluggin' away guys!
  • Harvest Moon complete!

This was a real surprise, and I'm glad I spent the money to buy this game. I had never played a Harvest Moon game before, and I certainly had a blast with this game. Rarely does one play a random game in a series they've never tried, and then immediately be totally into it. I reset during sping and summer a couple times to better figure out what I was doing, and then I was able to breeze through to the end. It's impressive too the little things this game gets accurate about farming, the big ones being that you make tons of money during the summer, and that chickens are a pain in the ass. XD (Did a month of farming when I was a teen on my aunt and uncle's farm, and swore I'd never feel bad about eating chickens. XD)

I also grew to like my cows a lot, and the morning routine with them was my favourite part of the day. You get to name them too, and since you only get four letters for names, I named them the same names I usually give my Final Fantasy Legend team, Tina, Duke, Zoey, and Newt. I gotta say it was pretty amusing for me to enjoy my cows as much as I enjoy my FFL team. : P

The game technically has no ending, but your farm gets judged at the end of the year by your grandfather's spirit. If it's good enough, you get to keep your farm, he may or may not give you a present depending on how well you did, and and he will extend your farm. As far as I know, the end of the year was when the SNES game ended, so I think it's fair to say that the completion requirements for Harvest Moon GB are to play an in-game year, and keep your farm at the end of it. There are a few things exclusive to the second year on the farm, but we can just consider that "loop 2".

This is probably the best game to come out of the GB's sluggish late life, and it's worth playing if you haven't tried it. It can be a little pricey depending where you look, but I don't feel bad that I spent forty bucks on it, since any game that keeps me up until 3:00AM two nights in a row is worth the money I spent on it.

I'm probably going to start the game from the beginning and keep playing it, since I apparently missed a couple things in the first year that are a little important.

Whats cheap and where do you find them?  Hahah.  I think what I paid was pretty fair.  There are plenty of other GB games that are just as rare that i've been searching for that I just cant find!  Well I find them but they're either over priced, or im unsure if they're the PAL version.

  • The SNES version actually ends at like 2.5 years

I gave up on Sword of Hope II. I think eventually that's going to be a pretty expensive one, but I can't justify buying it just because of that. It does have a very lovely cover art though.

I guess I'll find out if it's similar for the GB one eventually, as I'm still going to playthrough the game a second time and get some of the stuff I missed. I'm already back at the start of Fall.   (addicted)

    Also Happy Birthday Brock!
  • After the crushing defeat of not finishing FFLII, I am happy to say that we can check Battle Bull off of the list. I traded A. Meyers something (?) for it in 4th grade, beat it, and probably have not played it since. Still, I have always had fond memories of it, and after receiving the GB EverDrive last night, I can now say that I have beaten it again! After H.E.R.O. it is probably the (non-RPG or Zelda-like) game that I would like to port to the NES, or a version of it at least since straight ports are not my thing.

Seems like I need to launch into a full GB kick just before the New Year...
  • I picked up Universal Soldier and ran right thru it. MUCH easier than Turrican. Bad ending tho, but I enjoyed it. Thank you passwords!
  • Beat Bionic Battler:

Silly, trivial little game that takes less than 10 minutes to beat. I beat all five difficulty levels, but it's not as if Level 5 is really much harder than the others.

BTW by bad ending I mean the ending is bad haha.  Even tho theres only 1 ending (passwords are the same for easy and hard)

  • I picked up and got thru Were Back! I thought it was gonna be a lot easier than it was, but it was still pretty easy. I assumed it would be a cakewalk, instead of memorizing some levels. Lots of lives helped.
  • Ok, I'm back from being grumpy about having Elevator Action stolen from me

Here are some completion requirements to help fill out the list, open for discussion if anyone disagrees. I like the verbiage on some of the other threads, sometimes you should only need to play until the game loops, and sometimes "Complete" is all that's necessary to convey what's needed. Others might need clarification to distinguish between "beating" and "100%ing." For example, you don't need to find and complete all the secret levels in SML2 to beat it.

    Breakthru!: loops after 24 levels

    Chessmaster, The: Win 1 game

    Jeopardy!: Win 1 game

Jeopardy! Platinum Edition: Win 1 game

Jeopardy! Teen Challenge: Win 1 game

Jeopardy! Sports Edition: Win 1 game

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening: Complete

    Mario's Picross: Complete all puzzles

    New Chessmaster: Win 1 game

Penguin Wars: win against all the animals to get the Congratulations screen

    Pipe Dream: Complete Stage 36

Pokemon Blue: Beat the Elite Four

Pokemon Red: Beat the Elite Four

Pokemon Yellow: Beat the Elite Four

    Super Mario Land: Complete

Super Mario Land 2: Beat Wario

Tetris Attack: Beat Bowser in Vs. Com mode, normal difficulty

Tetris Blast: Beat B-Boy in Fight mode and beat 50 stages in Contest mode to see all endings

Wheel of Fortune: Win 1 game

    Yoshi's Cookie: complete round 10, stage 10

I think it's good to clarify the rationale behind some of the requirements that are already on the list. For example:

Dr. Mario: Clear all 20 stages. (I think Stage 20 is all that should be required, like the NES and SNES threads)

Qix: Clear stage 8. (does this show credits? Does it loop after stage 8?)

Revenge of the Gator: Score 1,000,000 points! (Is this the high score? What happens at 1,000,000?)

Yoshi: Reach Level 20 with at least 10,000 points on endless mode. (is this just a number?)
  • I just beat amazing penguin (I thought this was beaten already). Wow this was surprisingly hard towards the end.
