Ok, I'm back from being grumpy about having Elevator Action stolen from me
Here are some completion requirements to help fill out the list, open for discussion if anyone disagrees. I like the verbiage on some of the other threads, sometimes you should only need to play until the game loops, and sometimes "Complete" is all that's necessary to convey what's needed. Others might need clarification to distinguish between "beating" and "100%ing." For example, you don't need to find and complete all the secret levels in SML2 to beat it.
Breakthru!: loops after 24 levels
Chessmaster, The: Win 1 game
Jeopardy!: Win 1 game
Jeopardy! Platinum Edition: Win 1 game
Jeopardy! Teen Challenge: Win 1 game
Jeopardy! Sports Edition: Win 1 game
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening: Complete
Mario's Picross: Complete all puzzles
New Chessmaster: Win 1 game
Penguin Wars: win against all the animals to get the Congratulations screen
Pipe Dream: Complete Stage 36
Pokemon Blue: Beat the Elite Four
Pokemon Red: Beat the Elite Four
Pokemon Yellow: Beat the Elite Four
Super Mario Land: Complete
Super Mario Land 2: Beat Wario
Tetris Attack: Beat Bowser in Vs. Com mode, normal difficulty
Tetris Blast: Beat B-Boy in Fight mode and beat 50 stages in Contest mode to see all endings
Wheel of Fortune: Win 1 game
Yoshi's Cookie: complete round 10, stage 10
I think it's good to clarify the rationale behind some of the requirements that are already on the list. For example:
Dr. Mario: Clear all 20 stages. (I think Stage 20 is all that should be required, like the NES and SNES threads)
Qix: Clear stage 8. (does this show credits? Does it loop after stage 8?)
Revenge of the Gator: Score 1,000,000 points! (Is this the high score? What happens at 1,000,000?)
Yoshi: Reach Level 20 with at least 10,000 points on endless mode. (is this just a number?)
I chose 1,000,000 points for Revenge of the Gator because clearing the high score is an easy enough thing to do that it hardly feels like a satifactory completion. Scoring one million points in this game on the other hand is a pretty big deal, so I feel strictly from a gameplay experience, it's a more suitable goal to reach.
Similar sort of situation with Yoshi, where there's no great completion goal, so the real challenge I uncovered is simply surviving to level 20 of the endless mode. It's not an easy goal to reach, making it feel much more like a satisfactory goal. The point total of 10,000 is there to prevent the challenge from being abused, as you could potentially just hatch a bunch of small yoshis to boost the level counter and keep your stack low. I originally wanted to put it at 15,000 since I was able to do that and it was super fun and challenging, but I figured I'd lower it a bit for those who aren't that great at the game.
Dr. Mario is set at all 20 stages because again, simply clearing the final stage seems like a real copout. I understand the logic that if you can beat level 20 you can beat all the others, but the same doen't apply to Yoshi's Cookie where you need to beat every stage even though there are 100 of the same sort of tedious level. 20 stages of Dr. Mario while being allowed to continue where you left off seems fair enough to me, and is way more fair than the GB thread's original version which was to beat all 20 stages in a row without dying.
Stage 8 in Qix is due to the fact that the game design is broken, and can be easily abused to max out the score. Rather than make people play the game an exact specific way to max out the score, I settled on stage 8 for two reasons. At level 4 there is a fireworks display, and then the game adds an extra Qix to avoid. After stage 8 there is another fireworks display, and the game reverts back to one Qix, only now you have to cover slightly more of the surface area, essentially having the game loop.
For games with no real ending, it's more fun to make requirements where you actually feel like you have finished the game rather than beating one stage and calling it quits. I often describe a lot of internet users as vulcans, since if something isn't 100% logical fact, it tends to confuse them. Here in the GB thread there's no way we'll ever complete ALL of the games in a year, and I don't consider that the priority. Typically people who take part in the Game Boy thread are people exploring the library, and I think having fun and getting the most out of the games is more important than the amount we finish. That being said, I won't force 100% completion in games where it takes a HUGE amount of extra time and effort, because in situations like Donkey Kong Land 3 and Wario Land 2, it makes the games tedious chores that would be more fun without that nonsense.
It's also worth pointing out that these games "have no ending" so assigning an ending to them in general is fairly stupid. Really they just shouldn't be on the list at all, but that would never fly, so making endings for these games will always be fairly unscientific. Unless the GB scene explodes in the near future, I don't think we have to worry about the details too much.
Also congrats to guitarzombie for beating Amazing Penguin! Great game, but pretty tricky. Gets easier once you actually notice that destroying the ( - ) bubbles sends the enemies in the opposite direction. It adds some strategy to an otherwise frantic game.
Thanks, and also the enemy patterns I thought were random then towards the end you get the feel of how they move. I cant describe it, but Natsume ALWAYS makes annoying games for GB and NES haha.
Also beat Beavis and Butthead. Loved it. But totally disappointed they didnt have Tom Anderson, unless its a some special thing to find him. They had Van Dreissen, The Principal, the cashier at the store, Buzzcut, Todd, the creepy gardener, the Manager at Burger World but no Anderson. No Stuart either, but I really dug the game.
Just a heads up for the thread, I do plan to run it again next year, though I've decided I'm not going to actively complete games next year. One of my hopes with this thread is that people discover more of the system's library, and I feel if I were to take part I'd just eat up all the good games right away. I've got a lot of catching up to do on my new 2DS, so I'll be playing that instead of Game Boy for the next while. I'll certainly be active in the thread though, as I'll be here to give recommendations and pointers to anyone who may need them. If there was a game I finished this year that you wanted to try out, next year is the chance to do it without me snapping them all up.
With that said, I'll say it right now that you all should compete to see who can finish Wave Race first. It's really hard, but also really good. It would make a great game to race against other players to complete.
I'll update the thread in a little while. I have been pretty busy lately, and I haven't had much time for NintendoAge. That won't last forever though, so I'll have plenty of time in January onwards to keep up with the thread. Keep on going guys!
Oh I thought Castlevania Legends was beaten? I got the good ending by getting all the items. Unless it was an accident and it should have been taken off the list.
Castlevania Legends wasn't beaten by the first person who beat it due to the bad ending. I'm pretty sure you never mentioned that you beat it before, so I'll add it to the list. I've been putting it off for too long, so I'll just go ahead and update right now.
Before people start wondering why I consider 100% necessary for Castlavania Legends, similar to Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Block Ball, it doesn't require very much extra effort, and significantly adds to the ending. The NES doesn't have very many games with percentage totals, so that thread doesn't have to worry about it too much. Game Boy, SNES and onwards have to take it into consideration a bit more, and it's not entirely scientific. I'm trying to have a balance of keeping the game fun, and seeing everything there is to see, so in cases like Castlevania Legends and Kirby's Dream Land 2 it's fairly important to get the good ending, where something like Wario Land 2 and Donkey Kong Land the extra work isn't worth the payoff.
As for pinball fantasies, considering every game by Gametek on GB is terrible, I'd say just beat the default top score and be done with it. Again, something like Revenge of the Gator which is actually fun and worth playing, I think the extra score total is worth going for to get more out of a good game. I'm sure people will continue to question these ending requirements of games with no ending, but I'm just aiming to get the most out of the library for people new to the system.
Anyhoo, I'll update the list now. Pretty soon I'll have to recompile the list for next year. Hope everyone is looking forward to a fresh start.
Here in the GB thread there's no way we'll ever complete ALL of the games in a year
Oh, I don't know about that -- if we got even half the energy and participation that the NES thread gets, it could be done. So many Game Boy games are super-short and can be beaten in under an hour (for obvious reasons). The trick is figuring out what those 50-100 games are that require more effort, and if there are any that offer Ikari Warriors-esque levels of difficulty.
So far the only GB game I've worked on seriously & haven't been able to beat is Qbillion, as the last two levels of that are mind-bendingly hard. If there are other puzzle games without complete walkthroughs they could be a massive roadblock, but otherwise I think 80-90% of the library is a smooth win with no huge challenges. It's that last 10-20% we have to slowly figure out.
Well its redundant now... but I also beat Adventures of Star Saver and Punisher yesterday.
Not redundant at all, I've often beaten extra games in the last week or so of the year.
And, now that I mention it, I'm hoping to get Top Rank Tennis done before the end of the year. That would make the Game Boy the first system on which I've beaten every single one of its tennis games.

Yup -- multiple times, in fact! As I recall, the trick is to hit soft, wide serves and rush the net. It takes a while to get the timing but once you do, the game is cake.
I plan to do a final update at the end of the year, so I think we can safely kick back and relax until then. Save your new completions for a few days folks. Just a reminder that if there were ones I beat this year that you wanted to try out, next year is your chance as I'll continue running the thread, but will not actively complete games. I want everyone to give the library the full shake, so I'm not going to gobble up all the good games next year. I'll still be active in the thread though, so if anything comes up, feel free to ask. : )
I'll make a more in-depth final post on the last day of the year.
Only problem with that is, if I don't finish Top Rank Tennis by the 31st (as I hope to do), it won't count for 2017 since I started my savegame a while back. But we'll see if I can even beat it on the 31st -- those last few opponents could be very tough!
I will start it up tomorrow if no one was lined up to do it!
Thanks. I was going to do it, not that I really wanted to or needed another obligation. Let me know if you want help in any way.
If you had the list of games I could copy and paste that would be a HUGE help! If I can get that I would be able to post the thread asap. I have a list but it is a bit mangled...
I finally beat Top Rank Tennis but I started the game in 2016:
Any chance we could do something like the SNES thread, where never-beaten games don't need to be started in 2017? I love the idea of focusing on beating every game in the library first, over and above trying to beat it in a single year, but that's me.
In any event I don't plan to take this one on again anytime soon; it's too long and tough on the hands, especially since it uses Select and Start as action buttons.
