Mario has obviously died more. Most popular games that so many people suck at.
Especially now with Mario Maker.... some of the levels that people make in that game are absolutely insane on the difficulty level and I'm talking 'fair' levels, not cheap shit like GnG
I haven't played either GnG game for a while, but I remember the NES version being harder than the SNES version overall.
Well, I'd give Ghosts 'n Goblins a solid 3, Ghouls 'n Ghosts a solid 2 and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts gets the 1.
They can barely be called challenging.
In all fairness though, how many hours have you spent mastering each of those games? Sure, they're barely challenging to you now. lol
Took me 3 days to beat GNG for the first time using continues then another 2 days to beat it without using continues, back in 2010.
And another week to no death it.
The others took a bit less time since I already knew what to expect after mastering GNG on the NES.
Yowza, that's not really much time at all. I concede! *bows humbly*
On another hand, to this day I can't kill Metalman at Megaman 2 without dying dozens of times.
For me, Megaman is far more difficult than GNG. I just don't get how Megaman games work.
That's really interesting, actually. I can pick apart and wipe the floor with most Mega Man games. Even as a kid, I beat Mega Man 6 the same day I rented it. It's interesting to me to see that skill across game types isn't universal; to me it shows that some folks are just really talented(and hard working) in certain game types.
It's sounds like how I am with games that rely on stealth and sneaking(Metal Gear, most assassin-type games). I am absolutely atrocious at sneaking. I think all of the Metal Gear Solid games look really interesting, but I can't make it 5 minutes into the actual games. Even in games like D&D, any rogue-type character I make winds up just being an agile Fighter.
Even though it's a newer game, it wouldn't surprise me if Super Meat Boy rivals the all-time death stats for some classic game characters, just given the rate at which you can die, and how much you die, even as a good player. (you can rack up 50+ deaths in a matter of minutes)
Ghosts N Goblins is WAY more challenging than Super Ghouls N Ghosts for me. I've never beaten the former, while I've completed the latter several times.

This has been my experience. I've always considered SGNG to be one of the easiest (but still extremely hard) in the series, and NES GNG to be hardest.

Likewise from my experience. SGNG might just be my favorite in the series due to it's "easier" playability. I've played it so much, I can pick it up and play right through in an hour or so with minimal issue. Yes, it still has its challenging portions of course, but it's not as hair-pulling-fist-through-wall-put-head-in-dishwasher aggravating as GNG on the NES

Hahah Probably Ryu from ninja gaiden, any of the battletoads, and the silver surfer. Those fuckers go down more than all the playboy bunnies combined.
Haha, that's delicious, dude.
I myself love playing these games but suck at them so bad that I'd have to give them all a straight eight.
I gotta straight eight right here for ya
Haha well according to the NA dick size poll, you and the rest of NA has one for him.
lol, I think most of those guys were measuring tip to tailbone

This guy's been killed so often he's probably got a room on permanent reserve in hell.
As a kid Ghosts 'n Goblins kicked my ass so bad I actually gave it away.
I just picked up Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and I game overed on the first level.
On the hard to easy scale--10 being Wolverine's bones and 1 being your sister--how do you rate each of these games?
To beat:
Ghosts n Goblins - 7/10
Super Ghouls n Ghost - 8/10
1CC
Ghosts n Goblins - 8.5/10
Super Ghouls n Ghosts - 10/10
I'm surprised at the relative rating.
Super GnG is no cakewalk, sure, but I can at least progress in the game and reach the last boss without needing to continue repeatedly.
I find Super GnG to be about 100x more playable than the original, due to revisions in the controls, and less sporadic enemy behavior.
(also upgrading armor and a better selection of weapons is a huge help)

2nd - Mega Man?
I'd have to give it to Mario for total deaths all-time.
2nd - Mega Man?
If we lump Jumpman with Mario, so that arcade deaths get absorbed, then his odds get even better of being the top.
Other arcade-based nominations would be quarter-eaters like Pacman.
(or maybe the poor-bastard-pilot in Galaga or Galaxian)

I've probably killed "Rad" Spencer in Bionic Commando Rearmed trial mode more than anyone. Possibly Volgarr or Sonic as well.
I feel like Volgarr only has a high rate-of-death when you're first learning the game.
After you get a feel for it, you can go quite awhile without dying, since the Gradius-syndrome is real with this one
Something like "trial mode" in Bionic Commando Rearmed, or ANY kind of play in Super Meat Boy has a much, much higher rate of death, I'd suspect.
