WURM (any platforming level but they're not too complicated)
For the love of all that is holy, I absolutely despised those two Simpsons games (and levels). I remember raging SO HARD at that shit when I was like, 8 lol.
In Dragon Warrior II, the cave before Rhone is a frustrating maze filled with deadly enemies. If you don't choose the correct path, it loops back to the beginning.
Fack, I've been playing through DWII for the first time and this sounds brutal. Enjoying it immensely so far but there are some drawbacks. One being the encounter rate at times.
Ocarina of Time Water Temple, how has nobody said it yet.
Because it is a fairly well designed and adequately thought-provoking level, rather than a "needlessly confusing maze"?
Maybe I just had it overhyped from years of having read how awful it was, but when I finally got around to playing OOT, I thought the water temple wasn't really that bad.
Compare that to some of the practically-unmappable levels in classic CRPG dungeon crawls, and it's pretty straightforward by comparison.
(i.e. anything with minimal visual cues and combine it with unstated warps/teleports that happen with no annunciation to the player, whatsoever...)

Look you're making a sarcastic wink at the intellectual capabilities of a child at the time ok?! LOL I havent played it in years, I just remember being Stuck. As. Hell. on the Water Temple. Recently I was like "maybe if I tried it again these days, it would be easier and make more sense." Sooo I went to Google and started typing in "Ocarina of time W...." and the rest autofilled "Ocarina of Time Water Tower Stuck" "Ocarina of Time Water Tower Walkthrough" "Ocarina of Time Water Tower Lost" and figured OK, I guess I'm not the only one who ever spent a little too much time wandering in there wondering where the hell to go.

That's what I'm getting at with the difficulty being overhyped, though. I think a lot of people just psych themselves out, rather than simply playing the game.
I could see it being confusing, as a kid, if you were a newer gamer in the N64 era, but my dad and I mapped our way through way tougher games prior to that time.
But yeah, I'm just razzing you a little bit. In all fairness, I never played the game until I was an adult, and I didn't think it was that bad, at all.
The woods and cave in Friday the 13th. I would just wander around forever until I either found jason's mom or a cabin or just found an exit.
That isn't intregal to beat the game. And as confusing at it is, you can just randomly figure it out. I love F13 and I STILL dont know the maps, but im usually out within a few minutes of collecting some Vitamins... so I cant really add that. Plus the woods are supposed to be confusing. Nice touch for the game.

I played through it once as a kid and again a few years ago. It's a bit unbalanced compared to the other games in the series, and yeah the encounter rate is particularly grating, but the satisfaction of getting through that cave and making it to a save point is unparalleled. If you haven't played the subsequent installments, you're love for the series will only grow as you go through them. Good luck!

The woods are easily memorized after playing long enough. Once you get used to the way the map works, it's super easy. Jason only goes around the map in one direction (I forget if it's clockwise or counter-clockwise), and in the opposite direction when inside "the cave" portion of the map. A lot of the woods is wasted space, as the only purpose to go in is for Jason's mom's cabin. Plenty of keys and medicine to be found in there too, though.
The cave squid maze in Space Quest 2. the maze itself was not to bad, but the commands you had to enter to be able navigate it were not very intuitive.
PUT GEM IN MOUTH!
I remember I was about 12 or 13 and it took me about 2 weeks to figure that one out. But, damn, I was happy the day I finally got out of those caves...

Legacy of the wizard, the whole game
If I could find a way to replicate what that game does, brokeness and all, I'd be a happy clam .
