Good, fast freeware video editing software

Hey all.



I've been thinking of doing some videos again, and I'm hopeful that developments have been made in the software world.  I'd like something that can simply take clips, put them together, and possibly allow me to overlay text.



More importantly:  Something that's fast.  I remember some old programs that would be super slow if you had only 2 clips open.  Not even playing the clips...



In the past, I used VirtualDub, but that program is so limited.  Even if the resolution is different by 1 pixel or the frame rate is different, it won't let you join clips and make the different settings automatically the same.



Any recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

Sadly I think this is one of the areas where open source still lags behind the commercial software industry... most promising effort I have seen lately is Pitvi http://www.pitivi.org/ although codec support was pretty lacking the last time I tried.



Short of that I think you are stuck with things like ffmpeg and avisynth which may be able to produce similar results but in my experience required more effort and rftm-ing than commercial solutions.



Interestingly, I have seen posts about people using blender as a video editor lately, but have never used it that way.

How about Microsoft Movie Maker? You can do all the standard video editing stuff. Edit videos. Dub music over top. Put text over top. Fade in/out.



It is a bit slow saving the final video.

Had reason to do some video edits lately and gave https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve a shot.



Not too bad for a free NLE, although sadly not open source. Had the basic things you want in a NLE, editing window, clip library. Even had some bonus kinda stuff with color corrections and effects. Only crashed once on me which is better than I can say for the last time I used FCP. Overall not bad, although the export functions seem a bit limited.
